Eric Bieniemy - OC Kansas City Chiefs (NFL)

Meh. Tucker was an unmitigated disaster as DC in Chicago. Doesn't mean he didn't learn a lesson.
And the Bears probably wouldn’t have hired him as a HC last year either. Being a college coach is an entirely different job and EB was a disaster as a college coach at this program no less.

Great point here. Just read some articles on Mel Tucker and his time with the Bears as DC. Scary part is that their complaints seem to be the same bad defensive problems we saw this year. I think tucker isn’t a defensive genius at all from what I read. He jumped around and no one but us wanted him to head coach. Now Michigan state took him away and perhaps we are actually lucky. Bienemy is a true Buff and would be a massive upgrade from Tucker.

Not sure....
recruiting?
Organization Skills?
I tend to think over the long haul at CU EB will be the better recruiter. His ability to go in with his story in LA right now when USC is crumbling is a massive opportunity.

On paper EB is better. I think the hang over 2012 is the only reason we do not take him. Yes I know things were not handled well then. However, I really believe EB learned from that. We are in a totally different place than in 2012. We have a great recruiting class we need to keep, we have awesome facilities now, and USC is falling apart. I really just thing he has grown and learned both from the negative experience from his first go around and from his positive experience in KC under Reid.

Third.
The idea that EB is the same as he was as an offensive cordinator here last time is false. He earned a promotion from Andy Reid.

4th
He was promoted by Reid for a reason and won the Superbowl to prove it. No Andy Reid does not give out cordinator jobs because he likes you. The idea that EB is just promoted to that level and sits on the sideline is silly. I trust Reid above all of you.
Bingo!

I agree that we don’t know about the organizational skills. Running a program in college sports is different than being an NFL coordinator. But he’s proven himself with his football coaching skills and I think the organizational skills and day to day running of a program can be helped with the right director of operations, AD support, assistant coaches, etc. if we had someone great with the day to day running of a program but who didn’t have good football coaching skills, we still wouldn’t rise. And to me, I think tucker brought enthusiasm and the skills at running a program but he lacked in the skills of coaching etc. Bienemy is the coach Id most like to see as our next HC

Name a coach who has a better coaching tree than Ried. Your gonna say Saban, ain't ya. No one who has coached under Saban has won a NC.
Jimbo Fisher won a NC and coached under Saban smart guy. Has anyone on Reid’s tree won a NC? No because he’s an NFL coach so that’s an odd comparison to make.

I really just know it is going to happen.
You're either going to look pretty good with this -

or like a complete idot.

Unless you have serious inside information (doubtful), smart money is on the second one.

Didn't know about the Jumbo guy. You ain't the sharpest knife in the drawer are ya?

Aren't we focusing too much on EB's term as an OC and not enough as the RBs coach for the 2001-2002 team that won the 2001 Big 12 championship? Look at what he done in Kansas City ever since. Just look at JAMAL CHARLES career in Kansas City with EB as his position coach.

Just ask yourself what EB can do with the current CU RBs plus Schad and how that filters down to the rest of the football team. I was on the Chev train yesterday but I think I'm changing trains right now to the EB train.

If EB came in now, ran the show for the 2020 season under a 5yr contract, and then exited to the NFL as soon as 2021, I’d be okay with that.

He could be a stabilizing influence on the recruiting trail, keep recruiting going with his freshly minted SB ring as a prop, get HC experience on his resume, and be a known entity with the fans.

As far as 1-and-done or short time candidate goes, EB is positioned well to save CU’s butt given our current predicament. EB checks a lot of boxes.

I’m less excited about Scooter being the long term coach and someone CU would be targeting if Tucker were poached at the end of the 2020 season instead of now.

You don’t know who Jimbo Fisher is, but I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer? Ok.
I follow the Buffs, life is way to fun and short to follow the rest of football. Quick, what do these two lines have in common, | |.

No we’re not - one was a decade more recent and had him in a position of greater responsibility for game planning, practice preparations, and organization. The other occurred just 2 years removed from his playing days and only required him to recruit and coach one position.

You’re making a great case for EB as a RB coach but I’m not sure how his experience coaching Jamal Charles translates to being a college HC.

You only follow the Buffs and you are vocal about a former Buff being the HC - makes perfect sense now.

It's a message board. Mental masturbation, over analyzing, having strong opinions that come from emotions and/or limited information... that's what we do.

We can talk about EB to death, but the truth here is actually simple.

If he wants the CU job and can come to agreeable terms for RG & LC, the job is his. And that's the way it should be.

While EB’s last stint here still leaves a bad taste, remembering that the head coach’s previous best qualification was TE coach in the NFL. The DC had just been a DB coach, iirc, and the OC had no better experience than RB coach. No executive or real leadership experience to fall back on meant near certain disaster.

I tend to think he’s a much different coach now and the dynamics would be very, very different this time around. If RG picks him in a fair search, I’m ok with it.

When I initially thought about EB as HC, I had many of the same concerns that @Buffnik had. But the more I think about it, I think EB is now my number one choice.

I think it's fair to be concerned about EB's ability to be a HC based upon his performance at CU as an OC, but when you dig deeper, all of those concerns should be alleviated...here's why:

While I was a big defender of Embree (admittedly, for personal reasons), his tenure here was an unmitigated disaster. His staff was littered with with guys that were not qualified, or interested in taking the positions they were taking. Mike Bohn acquiesced to the pressure to hire a Buff and was clearly not a strong enough leader, nor enough of a Football guy to be able to dictate or understand how Embree's staff was formed and what the plan was. There wasn't a plan, just a bunch of fluff, and a lot of conflict between the staff and the AD. I have also since found out certain things about Embree and his time here that helps me understand better why he was so deficient as a HC...and that likely caused a lot of conflict amongst the staff. Compounded with everything else that was happening (or not happening) at CU at the time, it shouldn't be a surprise that it ended up the way it did. Wrapping EB into that mess as part of this discussion is fair, but only as it relates to his deficiencies as an OC. He was learning on the fly, had no experience managing coaches as an OC, and no experience in utilizing the organizational skills required to be a successful OC.

I am certain that he reflected on those deficiencies post firing, and has had a new opportunity to test those skills in the N.F.L. under one of the best tutors in the biz.

EB has also had a history of being a bit of a hothead, mostly born out of passion, but that was amplified in his last stint here because one of the main goals they had from day one was to toughen up the team following the Hawkins era. In listening to EB, you can now see/hear that Any Reid's demeanor has had a positive affect on him in this regard (surely age has played a part as well).

We want a team that will play a balanced and physical brand of football. That's what he knows. EB + whoever his OC is and/or Chev would provide a good balance here.
I know some are worried that EB will be able to recruit....the guy is one of the most "real", charismatic guys out there. He will recruit well...just like he always has.
He will be an excellent motivator.
He will be an excellent mentor for those kids that come from "rougher" backgrounds.
He will be guided by a strong Football AD and Lance Carl, who will demand a cohesive plan and support him in implementing that plan....which I presume would absolutely include some governance over who the DC will be.
The current players will love him, and he won't be faced with presenting a wholesale culture change as was the case last time he was here (far from it).
He will be devoted to CU (this is at the bottom for a reason...as I do not think it's anywhere close to being a requirement. It is a bonus, though.)

If RG signs off on EB and his plan...I am all in.

Why?

Because he ticks almost all the boxes and appears to be a guy who can hold the current team/recruits together.
I’m not sure he does tick all the boxes but ok. And I’m not sure he is somehow better positioned to hold a team together that he had nothing to do with assembling than any other coach.

Honestly, we don't know what RGs boxes are, but a guy given serious consideration to be an NFL HC is someone CU should consider. As for holding the team together, I think we know enough about EB's personality and recruiting skills to know that he would be able to recruit current players to remain. You simply cannot deny he has a magnetic, fiery personality and is a born leader.

I have zero doubt he can keep the players on the current roster together and happy.

Who is your top choice?

Maybe you’ve hit on where I diverge from a lot of the people who favor EB for the job - I agree he has a magnetic, fiery personality but I’m not entirely convinced he is a born leader.
