'21 WY C Lawson Lovering (SIGNED to COLORADO)

LOVE that he's already at 220. While his jump up in the rankings has been nice, I still was fully expecting him to need a solid season or so to gain weight and strength. But if he's 220 now, maybe we won't have to be as patient, and he's solidly contributing sooner than we (I) had hoped.

Great summation of what he's been working on and how he's exciting about the class being built around him. Think he's going to be such a unicorn, don't think we've had a player like him with his size and what he can do. Seems like he's adding to his post game. Don't ever think he'll be as clinical as Josh Scott. But kind of seems like a David Harrison/ Josh Scott hybrid.

Nice artcile. I'm harder on Harrison than others, but I think Lovering by the end of his junior year will be the best big I've seen as an adult in a CU uniform. I can see your Scott, but I cannot see your Harrison comparison. I just hope he keeps adding strength...really excited to see him play.

That's fair with the Harrison side of the comparison. I guess, I'm just trying to say with the 3-4 inches and from what I see a better vert than Josh. I think he will be a more above the rim player than Josh Scott. I definitely see more of Josh in him though.

Harrison was a gifted basketball athlete but simply didn't use it.
Scott was a good but limited athlete who worked very hard and got the most out of what he had.
Lovering looks like a guy who is much more gifted athletically than Scott was but who also works on being as good as he can.

He could be our best big man in the modern history of the program.

It’s like nobody here saw Shaun Vandiver play.
Vandiver was a very good big man who earned a solid career in Europe.

That said Lovering looks like his ceiling is much higher than Shaun's was. Vandiver was a solid in the paint player with a good enough mid range shot to be a threat.

He was never though a guy who could do the things that Lovering is already showing facing the basket and handling the ball. He still has to prove it against college competition but Lawson looks like a guy who could be a special player for us.

Vandiver was a 20/10/2 player for 3 seasons at CU. Folks forget how good he was.

Vandiver was the best player on some dog **** teams.
He was a guy who got everything he could out of his talents. As you say he didn't have much help.

He had very good skills for a big man but wasn't quite athletic enough to stick in the NBA, as I said though he had a very solid career playing internationally almost all in the Spanish League which along with the Italian league was the highest level of competition outside of the NBA.

Would love to have another Vandiver but looking at what he is doing I think Lovering has a real shot at being a higher level player than anyone we have had in a long time as a big man.

I had an American Lit class with Vandiver back in the day. He attended mostly regularly for the first 1/3 of fall semester. Showed up a few times with a baby in a portable car seat.

Once practice started, he totally ghosted. He showed up for the last week of class and tried to plead his case with the professor. I couldn’t hear him, but from the look on the professor’s face, I strongly doubt the conversation went well from his perspective. :ROFLMAO:

Anyway, yes, he was a great talent on some bad teams and actually seemed like a nice guy.

I'm just saying if I had to choose between Jelly and Vandiver for my team, it wouldn't be an easy decision.

I can't speak for others, but in my defense, I had posted that Lovering could be the best big I've seen as an adult (20ish and on) in a CU uniform. So... ...I guess even though I feel old at times, you're even older. 😁

Don't get me started. I was even gonna bring up Matt Bullard, but I didn't want to relive the pain.

Dang. That is a tough one. Slightest edge to Vandiver because he had less of a team around him. OTOH, Scott wasn’t asked to carry the team the same way Vandiver did because of that.

Actually, now that I think about it, very few people saw Shaun Vandiver play in Boulder. Sometimes I would leave the law library and walk over to the keg and continue my reading while a game was going on. Let's just say that the crowd never interfered with my studying. True story.

I loved watching Vandiver play and he was a great big man for the Buffs. Easily top three. If Lovering is equal to him I’ll be a happy man. That would put Lovering in or near the top three. If he surpasses Vandiver then we’ll probably be looking at the best big ever at CU and an NBA player. I’ll take either outcome.
