Official 2020 Fall Camp Thread

We will agree to disagree. Covid is the same for all teams and is not a valid excuse. I do think Embree is about the best hire he made. The rest of the staff are all head scratchers. Especially the Lopez hiring as the recruiting coordinator.

We will know in about 2 years but I will not let the recruiting topic go. I wi be the first one to eat crow if it turns around and gladly accept it. This staff is not showing any signed of getting it though
It completely is an excuse and only goes so far. I do think they were put in an usual position, more so than really any other program because of the February hire, COVID, no spring ball, and an extremely limited fall camp. KD brings no hype to the program and other Schools can easily negative recruit against it.

Dorrell needs to win immediately to gain that momentum back. 2021also needs to be and has to be a good class. No excuses at that point. You'd be surprised how close I am to thinking your way, I can just see the issues associated with this cluster **** and hope KD has a plan.

Yeah, think you are confusing me with someone else re: the drinking. Haven’t commented on it.

Had Sark been the hire I’d be supportive of it and you raise good points as to why. I was actually hoping he would be at the time. My main take it is that he wasn’t the hire so no reason to get hung up on what might have been. HCKD wasn’t even on my radar at the time, but going to be pulling for him and the staff to get the ship righted.
Oops, sorry. And agreed

What indication is there that Saban hangs them up anytime soon? Also, I can’t imagine Sark being the Bamas top choice when he does leave.
It is a guess. I was born in Bama, closet Bama fan. Saban will be 70 this year IIRC and the talk was Sark got paid because they want to keep him around to run the show. Could be BS, just scuttlebutt.

I wish I had your positive thoughts. I really do. I do not see a plan much different than when he was at UCLA based on the recruiting effort. I hope I am wrong and he has a plan that works. That would be good for CU and fun to watch. Just not in the same place you are.

Alabama will want the biggest name in college. I think they throw an unreal amount of money at Dabo

I'm glad we finally uncovered BamaCharlie's sock!

That would not surprise me either.

But didn't they make Sark the highest paid AC in the country? Clearly, he is not up to CU's exacting standards.
Sark is the highest paid coach until he isn't. I think Saban stays until they force him out. He seems to love coaching and is an ego maniac who loves the control.

Rick George has been amazing at what he is amazing at. He is really good with donors and fundraising. That was why CU brought him in. Plus, he knows CU's challenges and knows why it can be successful.

However, the dude has cost the athletic department a tremendous amount of money due to has lack of knowledge in coaches contracts. He needs help here and seems unwillingly to do so. His hires have been extremely uninspiring across the board.

Rick and Lance have been very adamant that they value recruiting as a major component of what they look for in a head coach. It just doesn't make any sense to me that they would publicly say this but that wasn't something they looked for in this hire? Something seems way off.

If Rick is saying one thing publicly and doing another, then he needs to be shown the door immediately. I will remain hopeful, but seems same ol, same ol to me. I can see a path where Dorrell can win, but my biggest concern is that his ceiling is a 6-7 win program.

P.S. Sarkisian would have been a homerun hire and I still think this. He will be a head coach again soon.
Dave Logan would be a great AD for CU! :cigar:

Personally, knowing people who’ve dealt with alcoholism, it’s a difficult beast to get rid of, especially in times of stress and pressure. He’s doing well at a spot where he doesn’t have to be “the guy.” My fear is having someone who’s fallen hard down that path in the past leading the program, is not what CU needs. Not saying he’d go back down that route, but assuming the responsibility of leading a program can do crazy things. It’s just my opinion. To me he’s not some no brainer must hire, to much extra stuff to worry about.

And with KD, I simply think the guy deserves a chance this year and going forward, under normal circumstances. Let’s see how he does on a few game days, and if he has th connections and understanding of the college game to build a better staff when his backs not against the wall from day one.
I guess I see those concerns as something I’d expect an AD to worry about and do a complete due diligence on. Seems odd for fans to worry about that kind of stuff but ok.

As for Dorrell, I think we’re all rooting for him and he could make fools of a lot of people here (myself included) if he succeeds. But the big concerns from many fans when he was hired were:

1) Can he recruit?
2) Can he assemble a quality staff?
3) Has he been away from college football too long to understand how to build a program in 2020?
4) Can he be a plus game day coach and beat teams with superior talent?

The early returns on #1 and #2 are decidedly bad and reinforce those initial concerns. Jury is still out on #3 but at best I think the outlook not so good. #4 we will learn over the next couple months and hopefully this is where he shines.

You don't think Demetrice Martin (who had a rep as one of the best recruiters on the West Coast before he came here) was a good hire?

Well, if he was and the staff is such great recruiters, what is the issue with our class? Covid is not going to cut it at all because it is the same for everyone. My guess is that the head man does not value it at the appropriate level and does not emphasize it. His hire for recruiting coordinator prooves this point. Unless they get it fixed, he will not make it. Plain and simple. You cannot beat teams when your talent level is levels below who you are playing. You may win a game here and there you are not supposed to, but in the end the averages will play out. Being in the bottom of the conference is due to hiring a HC who has been out of college football, except for 1 year where he failed as a OC, for more than a dozen years. He is repeating the errors of his last HC job as well which got him fired. It was much easier to recruit at UCLA than Boulder and he failed at it.

Martin is a good recruiter but the overall results are showing it does not matter at this point

Gonzales is the story of Fall camp so far.
Sounds like defense is way out ahead of the offense at this point. Not surprising, but I’d guess we can expect a lot of low scoring slogs this year.

Who was your choice for HC? Where was Dorrell on you list?

Mine was Sark. Dorrell not even on same page. Massive gap between the two.

Massive gap? Yes. Not in the way you think.

I have lived in LA since ‘92. I have listened to the (constant) radio commentary on both UCLA and USC programs over the years, and on Sark in the year or two leading up to his firing. Think we are critcal of coaches and our program? LA was ecstatic to get him out of town by the end. Sure, Sark is presently resting under Saban’s comfortable wing, but he is a brush fire waiting to happen to some poor program (to horribly mix metaphors). That’s the last thing we need.

I think we got exactly what we need: stability and some time to build from a new base camp. Win some games with some quality talent we have in-house, and we can take a step up. MT f***’d us. I think we have landed with an unexpected amount of poise.
