Official realignment thread - SEC formally invites OU and Texas to join the conference in 2025

2021 Nielsen DMA (Designated Market Area) rankings have come out. This is the size of media markets across the country.

Here's where the Pac-12 stands along with home markets of expansion candidates:

2. Los Angeles - 5.735M (UCLA, USC)
5. Dallas-Ft. Worth - 2.963M (SMU or TCU candidates)
6. San Francisco-Oak-San Jose - 2.653M ( Cal, Stanford)
8. Houston - 2.570M (Houston or Rice candidates)
11. Phoenix (Prescott) - 2.158M (ASU)
12. Seattle-Tacoma - 2.098M (Washington)
16. Denver - 1.798M (Colorado plus Colorado State candidate)
21. Portland - 1.315 (Oregon, Oregon State)
27. San Diego - 1.132M (San Diego State candidate)
30. Salt Lake City - 1.100M (Utah plus BYU candidate)
34. Kansas City - 0.986M (Kansas or Kansas State candidates)
40. Las Vegas - 0.834M (UNLV candidate)
44. Oklahoma City - 0.755M (Oklahoma State candidate)
48. Albuquerque-Santa Fe - 0.715M (New Mexico candidate)
50. New Orleans - 0.664M (Tulane candidate)
55. Fresno-Visalia - 0.607M (Fresno State)

64. Tucson (Sierra Vista) - 0.480M ( Arizona)
66. Spokane - 0.470M (Washington State)
67. Honolulu - 0.464M (Hawaii candidate)
82. Colorado Springs-Pueblo - 0.387M (Air Force candidate)
83. Waco-Temple-Bryan- 0.384M (Baylor candidate)
101. Boise - 0.311M (Boise State candidate)
104. Reno - 0.294M (Nevada candidate)
145. Lubbock - 0.168M (Texas Tech)

Obviously some of these pull a partial (sometimes significant) of major or minor media markets beyond what I listed. Other factors like national draw are also major considerations. Also, some markets may already be within the reach of the Pac-12 media to a large extent (San Diego, Fresno, Colorado Springs) even if the conference doesn't technically own the market. And some split a market with a bigger dog (I.e., Oklahoma City).

Putting athletic success, facilities, recruiting footprint, fan support, revenues, academic standing, national media impact, geography and cultural fit to the side - home media market would drive me to the following expansion candidates: Houston + either SMU or TCU are obvious. After that, it gets tough.

There's also overall state population to consider and owning an entire state for media distribution (especially helps the case where it would be the only P5 program in the state).

Did you mean to finish that thought?

BYU, UNLV, KU, SDSU?

I went back. Houston + SMU or TCU is obvious.

UNLV, SDSU, KU and UNM all make some sense on this criteria vs other options. Even CSU splitting but solidifying the CO markets looks better than some of the smaller markets.

In the latest sign of James Madison’s likely move from the Football Championship Subdivision to the Football Bowl Subdivision and into the Sun Belt Conference, the school’s Board of Visitors will hold an emergency meeting on Friday.

JMU sent out notice of the meeting on Tuesday morning.

There was not one previously scheduled until Nov. 18-19.

Once the Board of Visitors approve of the jump from FCS status to FBS status and a conference change from the Colonial Athletic Association, where the Dukes have been longstanding members, to the Sun Belt, the University can move forward into the next part of the process. That involves earning approval from the state.

Seriously, guys, we need to start pushing expansion through schools that give us entertaining basketball and we have a chance to beat in football.

Kansas
UNLV
New Mexico
Texas Tech
We already have entertaining basketball. KU already plays here because of all the damn alums.

All that does is divide the same pie by more mouths. TV isnt gonna pay for those names because they already know what those schools ratings are like: nobody watches them but their own alums.

Adding KU would give us another good candidate for a deep run in the tournament, though. I really don’t think any of those other schools do much in that regard.

From a purely fan perspective, adding KU, CSU, Boise and BYU makes sense. Whether any of those schools really adds value is another story. Might help solidify the Western US from a content standpoint. That’s not nothing.

Swap SDSU with NM and you have my dream scenario. And yes, I realized the cali schools won't allow SDSU in.

Where the **** is Old Dominion anyway, I'm guessing Virginia. I don't know that's right?
I wish I didn’t know. But because my wife went to a small college and CU doesn’t have a baseball team, she adopted them, being our local team at the time, and I have spent more soul sucking afternoons at that field than I care to remember.
To be fair, my son attended baseball camps there for a few years which made him a pretty good ball player.

I was floating down the Salt Fork River in a canoe under a canopy of trees, and a giant owl took off. It must have had a 6 foot wingspan and displaced a lot of air. Loud. I was too skeered to tell it it was stupid.
Save the trees. Wipe your ass with an owl.

Why UNM? Let's just let them go/stay to the Wac or Mwc. The Cal schools can eat **** and let sdsu in
