Tosh Lupoi - DC Alabama

People are talking about how much of the play calling the candidates are responsible for in their coordinator positions. We are not hiring them to be the DC, we are hiring them to be a head coach. I remember when we hired Bill McCartney - he was a defensive guy but he tended to get more involved in the offense then the defense. McCartney was a leader, a communicator, paid extreme attention to detail, a great motivator, and a student of the game. He learned a lot of that from Bo Schembechler.

I am not saying Lupoi is McCartney but we do know he is hard working, a good communicator, and with a 5 year apprenticeship under Saban he probably has some of the other bases covered.

I guess over the last few days Lupoi has probably become my top choice, but whomever CU hires, I believe I will be happier if we go the coordinator route then if we hire a Tedford or Holgerson.
This is a great point that gets lost in the shuffle. He has the knowledge, he's getting playcalling experience, and he can certainly recruit and teach the coaches how to recruit, but does he have what it takes to build a staff, manage it, and lead a program? That is what Rick George will have to decide, and none of us are really in a position to know one way or another until we watch it unfold.

I guess it comes down to whether or not you trust RG implicitly to identify the right guy.

DC at Oregon now.

put me as the conductor of the TOSH train.

can you say multiple top 10 recruiting classes coming to Boulder.

can’t believe no one is talking about him.

He’s ready.

I can see the interview now:

RG: so, tell me what you see in the Colorado program and your vision for how to improve things?
TL: Well, first off, your admission requirements are out of whack if you want to win. Second, your transfer guidelines are more appropriate for Vanderbilt, you need to kick start your NIL program to be competitive for the better players, you need better financial support from the school, your marketing and public relations efforts are amateur at best, you need to boost your recruiting staff, and you need a more robust budget to attract and retain better assistants.

Tosh would also ask about CU's network of shadow boosters and street agents. It wouldn't be pretty.

I think Lupoi would be a good hire for you guys. Lanning is a former SEC DC so it's not as if losing Lupoi is going to crater our defense going forward.

Oregon is also pretty much self-recruiting at this point and Colorado could certainly use some recruiting oomph to get back on track.

dude. don't jinx yourself like that. i said something similar in about 1995 and man did that turn out badly.

lupoi is just the super-villain leader this program needs. i miss the days when we were flipping everyone the bird and laughing at their complaining.

So is Lupoi still a monster recruiter now that paying players isn’t really a competitive advantage anymore?

now this is an interesting question.

do bagmen still matter post NIL?

i'm going to go ahead and speculate yes but who knows....

Eh, I'm actually not a huge Lupoi fan. I think he was with Sarkesian at Washington in 2013 and there were program shenanigans.

I'm not saying Lupoi isn't qualified, especially branching out of the Alamba coaching tree and with NFL experience, but he's replaceable.

And would be a huge upgrade in Boulder.

he is one of maybe 5 men that could bring a top-10 recruiting class in the next TWO years to boulder. the other 4 are already HC's
