'13 AZ SG Jaron Hopkins (Signed to Colorado)

That's still a nice bump from a 77 grade, #34 SG to a 79 and #21 SG. Right on the edge of the top 100.

I looked on Dobson HS's team site, but they don't have stats. However, they are showing that their next game is Thursday night for the opening round of states. Good luck, J-Hop!

I've been loosely following through game recaps, and he has been kind of quiet since maxpreps was updated. Right after that, he missed a game with pneumonia, then was limited for a few more. Toward the end of January, he picked it up and had a few games in the 18-22 point range. Last week, they started sections and Dobson won their first game, with Hopkins scoring 33 w/7 boards and 7 steals, hitting 8 FT's down the stretch. In the second round, they lost to Casey Benson's Corona squad (the #1 seed). I can't find stats for that one, but they did say Hopkins led a Dobson comeback, but they fel short.
 
Dobson won their Thursday night game. Hopkins was the leading scorer with 19 and was I interview by Arizona top news station, News Channel 3.
They play their next sectional game on Saturday.

He finished the season averaging 22.2 pts, 2.4 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.1 steals per game. 49% FG, 37% from 3, and 55% FT's. Maxpreps has outstanding stats for Jaron, but none on Fletcher or Thomas

55% FT? good lord :lol:. If he wants significant minutes next year, he's gonna have to improve that number.

I love seeing a guard shoot about 50% from the field, though. Especially since he's more of a scorer than a shooter, that's a big number. And he's really filling up the stat sheet by contributing in a lot of phases. Perfect for Tad's system.

fair enough. That is a damn impressive stat sheet. You gotta wonder who gets the RS next year. Minutes are going to be very, very tough to come by.
 
I'm so unbelievably excited about this kid next year. I really think he's going to be an All-Pac 12 player when it's said & done.

Drink more whiskey. Not only would we win, but you'd be blacking out for other reasons. Win/win.

EDIT - On a serious note, that is my big concern with Hopkins' game. Honestly, his form looks ok, so I'm hoping it's something that can click for him soon because we can't afford for him to be a liability at the end of games. We need him to continue the Burks/Dinwiddie tradition we have going.
 
Really hope Fletcher and Jenkins are good at the stripe. The only reason our team FT% improved from early in the season was the Mayor (176-214, 82%). He's taken nearly a third of the team's attempts (Team -- 449-659, 68%).

I will always trust our coaches. They've got the proven track record.

2009: Alec Burks, Rivals 3*; unranked SG
2010: Andre Roberson, Rivals 3*; unranked SF
2011: Spencer Dinwiddie, Rivals 3*; #25 PG, #146 nationally

2012 is when we started getting some respect and a CU signing meant something. Josh Scott and Xavier Johnson were both rated 4*.

As much as I'm in disagreement with the drop to J-Hop, he's still a Top 150 and both Fletch and Dustin were moved into the Top 150 after signing with CU. It's hard to feel disrespected. Hopkins is still 27 spots above where Spencer was in the national rankings.
 
The issue many see with Hopkins is (much like Dinwiddie), they don't know where he fits.

Is he quick enough for a point?
Is that shot of his good enough for a 2 guard?
Is he big enough to play SF?

His shot isn't classicly perfect, so it's going to be viewed as suspect.

So where others have problems seeing him fit into a classic system, Tad sees a guy who can handle the ball and create mismatches. Not the same player, but certainly the same "doesn't fit into the mold" scenario that kept Dinwiddie from getting bigger offers.

This exactly is part of how Tad has been successful. Others see somebody who doesn't fit a traditional role. Tad sees a guy who is a missmatch for the traditional role. He may not be quick enough to be a traditional point but he is to quick for traditional 2s and to big for traditional points. His shot is good enough to force people to play him honest so he can use his ball handling skills to penetrate and go over points or past 2s. Same thing with SFs, he may not be classicly big enough but he shoots well enough to force them to come out and then he can go past them. Defensively he can also create missmatches based on what Tad has done in the past.

A lot of these same questions are things that were in the background about Spencer. We also had the questions about Dre when he came in, not big enough, not enough of an outside shooter, etc.

I've never seen Hopkins play other than the bits of video that get posted so I don't know but I trust Tad, especially based on his past history.

Based on his production and athleticism, I have no idea how Rivals has continued to drop this kid.

I get the position concern, but this kid is an absolute stud basketball player.
