'20 CO OT Reece Atteberry (Signed to Michigan)

Without any actual knowledge of the situation, I could see a scenario where our coaches didn’t feel like they were making any headway with him and decided to cut bait. Not that they didn’t want him, but when it becomes obvious that the feeling isn’t reciprocal, don’t waste your time.

I don't necessarily disagree, but it's so early in the game that I'd find it hard to believe our coaches have already given up on such a high profile in-state recruit. My guess is that we continue to press him even without making his top 5. A lot can change over the course of a year.

it’s a numbers game. We have offers out to 30 or so linemen (I don’t know the exact number, I’m just guessing). We are only going to sign 4-6. As much as you might like to have the kid on your roster, there comes a time when spending time recruiting him takes away from the time you’d spend recruiting one of those other 29 that you still have a reasonable chance of landing. You keep in contact with him and be available if he changes his mind. Beyond that, move on.
 
I'd continue to recruit any local recruit, especially, because there's always 1 wildcard in play until the end: Leaving home is sometimes difficult.

Having raised 4 kids in a part of Boulder County where just about every kid goes to college, with quite a few having no real financial restrictions on where they will be going, I'm always amazed at how many end up at CU in the end. These are non-athletes, but many with acceptances to Ivy league schools, or the myriad of small, elite private schools that seem to be popular such as Lewis & Clark, Linfield, Reed, Willamette, Middlebury, Wesleyan...... Late in the Junior years and early in the Senior years, that's all the rage. A big percentage in the end realize they don't want to leave Colorado, for a myriad of reasons.

Not to mention, quite a few that do leave, don't adjust great and seek to come back home.

I see no reason that athletes would be different. Keep recruiting them until the end, no matter what!

The obvious difference to me is the adoration (and other cool stuff) footballers receive at football schools. Jane and Joe Schmuck probably don’t get that at Linfield, Pepperdine, or Smith.

Staying home gets you a group of acquaintances that is hard to escape and tough to brush off without being a richard. Leaving home can be a clean slate.

Still, I agree that you keep after them, you never know. Playing for your home state could be huge fun, especially if you can always look back and say you helped turn around a decade plus of (mostly) suckitude. We lose some, but get most recruits who do exactly what we’re bemoaning. Can you imagine all the Texans who’re pissed ‘Viska didn’t stay home? We’ll be ok.

I actually agreed with all of your post until your last line. Comparing Texas to Colorado is a very, very bad comparison. Colorado had 1, four star recruit in 2019, Texas had 47. I get your point but it’s a bigger deal when we can’t keep home the small amount of top end talent we do produce.

I get that, but the nearly 30 million population in Texas makes that mostly relative, in my eyes. Also, last year was a down year in the ratings; Colorado has several more 4* this year, and will next. I wonder how many top Texas recruits stay in state, where there are several good options... sort of. Familiarity breeds contempt in some cases, was my general point.

To answer your question, 22 of the 47 stayed in state including 5 of the top 10. 7 went to Oklahoma and 2 went to OSU which is about as close to staying home as you can get. So 46% on the top 47 four and five star players stayed in Texas.

For reference Colorado will produce 5 in 2020. We’re currently not favored for 4/5 and David Moore has no predictions.

There will always be guys who want to leave home for college and go elsewhere. There are kids from Michigan and Ohio that turned down the local powers, there are kids who leave Texas despite Horn offers. Probably some Alabama kids who turned down offers from the Tide.

Difference is that those schools and the other big names keep a lot higher percentage home than we do.

A big part of that is that a lot of kids also want to be a part of a "big time" program, have a good shot at the playoff, be almost guaranteed of a major bowl multiple times, and play for a school that gets attention no matter where they go. This is part of why a Notre Dame can recruit even when they are down.

High school kids though are still kids making what may be one of the most important decisions in their lives. Treat them with respect, understand that they may decide to go out of state for the reasons listed above.

Also though never forget that as it gets closer to time to sign on the dotted line they may have second thoughts. They might start thinking about the girlfriend they are leaving behind, about not being able to come eat mom's lasagna when they want, about their little brother, and about all those other things that make home their home.

As these come stronger into their minds those reminders that they have a world class university right here gives them an option. Seeing a program on the rise and realizing they can be a part of making a program great instead of just being another part in the machine can matter.

Atteberry is good enough that he has the choices and he is likely to do well no matter where he goes. We just need to stay in touch with him and the others and eventually some will turn our way, and be glad they did.

Good to keep in contact right til the end. Harbaugh may not survive much longer. Started 20-3, but 18-10 since then, 0-4 against the Buckeyes, and 1-3 in bowl games.

Good point, with Urban gone if he doesn't beat tOSU this season things may get uncomfortable fast.

I think that is the prevailing outside opinion which does not really align with inside the Michigan program. First and foremost, who are they going to get who is a clear upgrade?

Well, the record speaks for itself. 18-10 over the last 28 games is a clear trend down, haven’t done well against tOSU, MSU or bowls, and never won a conference championship. Harbaugh’s act wears thin everywhere he’s gone, including as a player decades ago. My brother is a Michigan Alum and anecdotally, I can tell you that he and his friends aren’t happy with the results. The fanbase is definitely polarized in their opinions at this point.

This year is a big year for them. Lots of publications have Michigan as a top five team. Their schedule is really favorable this year, with most of their toughest games at home in the big house. Urban is gone. Could be a great year.

On the flip side, Harbaugh is retooling the offense to bring in modern RPO concepts, and he hired a new OC (his sixth in six seasons). Sometimes that works out and sometimes it’s brings disaster. Defense lost a ton of starters from last year. We’ll see.
