2018 Season Countdown Thread

For bowl aspirations, how important is it to start 3-0? I think it’s supremely important, making CSU and ‘braska must win games.

Style points would be great for Goats and Skers
They can and should do better than 3-6 in conference play.
I must be going absolutely senile. A bunch of posts lately aren't making any sense to me, such as these in the "countdown" thread.

Just win. If Buffs win 8 games this year, but only beat the Rams by 3 in game one, is anybody going to really care in December?
Some actually will. Which is stupid. But style points matter to a lot of people.

I don’t want there to be any doubt who the best team in the state is. There was a **** ton in the media last year that “CSU got robbed!” I don’t want any doubt this year. I want zero of the “but for a couple of plays, the Rams would’ve won” ****. Not to mention what kicking ass does for the team psyche.

They will always find that point in any loss that is close. Always have and always will. It’s what keeps them coming back against a superior team year in and year out.

winning solves everything.
i don't place my money on things I can't control, so I couldn't care less about over/under, etc.

Winning is winning...

Agreed that winning is winning, but only beating CSU by a point or two this year would make me concerned about CU’s competitiveness and ability to get to 6 or 7 wins, regardless of whether or not it’s game one for Chev as a play caller.

Good thing they’re going to win by at least two Tuds.

If you're worried about CU's competitiveness and ability to get to 6 or 7 wins, style points in a win over CSU won't change that. The only thing that will change that is the 6th or 7th win.

The CSU game is a bit of a litmus test. We have a pretty good idea what they are this year. They're a rebuilding MWC team. If we want to compete in the Pac12 South this year, there better be absolutely no doubt who the better team is on the field.

It’s not a style point issue, it’s a litmus test issue. As we saw last year with an extremely weak OOC schedule in which we won, but really struggled vs CSU and UNC, if CU can’t be significantly better than those caliber teams, it doesn’t bode well for P12 play.

I simply don't agree that an opening game in August tells us what the team will be all year.

Last year's team didn't get better because of internal issues. But I see teams every single season that don't look like they're clicking and gag their way through an early season game then go on to have an excellent season. Winning next Friday while avoiding any key injuries is what matters. That's what will matter against Nebraska the following week. And then against New Hampshire. And so on and so forth.

That’s a politically correct way of looking at it, but fact is, a P5 team struggling against a rebuilding G5 team and/or decent FCS team, is typically going to mean a mediocre P5 squad. Again, I’m not looking for style points, but if our OL and DL can’t be the more dominant and physical units and impose their will against CSU and NH, there should be serious cause for concern about how they’ll fair against SC, Utah, UW, etc. You can blame last year on internal issues all you want, but that team simply wasn’t very good, and it showed in the OOC games.

I understand if we don't blow them out on the scoreboard. Maybe the timing of our offense is just a bit off. Maybe the OL doesn't communicate well and misses some blocks and gives up some drive killing sacks. Maybe our DBs blow some coverages and give up some long TDs. It's week 1; that happens.

But we better look like a significantly better, more athletic team. If we don't, and we didn't last year, then it's going to be a long year.

The funny thing is, I see that for just about every team...EXCEPT the Buffs (Stanford barely pulls out at Purdue, FSU barely beats Troy, OSU almost loses to Cincy, etc). But if the Buffs struggle, it’s a death spiral.
