2019 NIT thread

I compared them to three low ranking teams that were at-large's - not "blue bloods".
“I'm all for local guys making it good. But competing against Dayton in the NIT is quite a long road away from competing against Ja Morant in the NCAA tournament (or Kentucky, Duke, UNC, Gonzaga, Tennessee, Michigan, Michigan State, Florida State (who has like 4 Tyler Beys by the way, with another on the way next year) et al).”
Mixed up you and brettden.

I don't get the point you are trying to say here. Are you saying we should recruit more diamond in the rough?
I think the evaluation phase needs work. And taking a chance on guy who is 6'8" and is elite athletically to me is different than say taking a 6'8" kid from Columbine who can hardly dunk. I know this will sounds harsh, but if you are trying to win you don't keep (or add) rmarginal players in the program. So I guess yes I would be on board with a diamond in the rough type prospect every other year or so. Or maybe I don't even have a point I'm just wishful thinking. Nevertheless, some roots into the southeast couldn't hurt.

I agree with the sentiment that its better to find an elite athlete and teach him how to play basketball rather than find a skilled guy with marginal athleticism and pray he becomes more athletic.

The latter obviously isn't possible, but say you hit on 1 of 3 of each guy.

If you recruited the athletes, you have a high level dude and two guys who can run, jump, and defend.

The three non athletes will still be unathletic and at a disadvantage.

We’re not playing tomorrow. I guarantee it.

You are right.

Seriously, for a couple of hours after the Norfolk game, every app or site that actually listed the game (some didn't have it at all) had it tomorrow with TBA as tip off time.

No matter. Easier for me to get tickets and make a plan with a couple more days notice anyway.

This is great stuff. Instead of playing #1 bracket rated Alabama in Tuscaloosa, the Buffs get to play a lower-rated sea level team at home with lots of rest and motivation.

This tip day/time worked out as well as possible. May help us get Parquet back, too, and it would be good to get him on the court with some post-season experience heading into next season.

If the non-athlete is a pure shooter, at least there’s that. But we’ve also been burned by the athletes, with guys like Jaron Hopkins. But he went on to play pretty good for Boise so maybe that was a team leadership thing. Although I loved him during that CSU game.

I think you mean Fresno, but yeah. Hopkins wasn't as successful here because he's not really a guy who can shine within the confines of running offensive sets.

This. I used to be dumbfounded watching Hopkins in our offense. "One of these kids is doing his own thing..."

I think Tad learned a lesson with that J-Hop, Fletch, Dustin, King recruiting class that, on paper, was probably the best class ever signed at CU from top to bottom.

For what it's worth. Hop and Fletch were way better players than what they showed here.

That's part of my point. The priority can't be that athleticism and talent trumps a skill set and overall program fit. Dustin looked good when he got to Arkansas. They were all good basketball players.

I'm always for fitting the program to the talent. College coaches need to play a more fast and loose style IMO.

This is probably a big issue for buffs. Tad wants to play disciplined set offense, but the type of player that often breaks open a game don't often thrive in that scenario. Gotta find a compromise somewhere in the middle maybe.

Tad seems to have been willing to move more that direction with Kin than he has in the past.

what indicates this to you? I don't claim technical expertise in basketball, but to my casual observation, CU plays less of a set offense than any other team I follow (VT, Wisconsin).

You're right here, but also Wisconsin traditionally is one of the most set offense teams in the country. I haven't watched a lot of Va Tech the last couple years, but Buzz Williams seems to be a big set guy from memory.

if a fan of another team asked you what offense the Buffs run, what would you answer?

It’s how you look at it. The offense is often pretty piss poor. We come up and pass to the big guy trailing for no reason at all (and he almost travels every time because he doesn’t want to jump stop because it’s a stupid pass and he’s just trying to get down to the block, and then he moves it to the wing who passes back to the point. Every time. It just wastes time off the clock. Why do we do this idiotic thing?
