BOULDER – Colorado women's tennis won its first match of the season here Sunday after defeating Gonzaga 5-2.

The Buffaloes (1-3) took the first four points and clinched the match before Gonzaga (2-3) was able to pick up a point.

Caroline Pozo and Maria Campos led the way for Colorado with a double point clinching win and a pair of singles victories. The duo took down Cate Broerman and Adrianna Sosnowska 6-4 in the No.1 doubles match after Betina Tokac and Ellen Puzak picked up the win in the No.3 doubles match. Unfortunately, the No.2 doubles duo of Ky Ecton and Mila Stanojevic lost 7-5 just seconds before the No.1 team clinched the point.

Moving to singles, Pozo defeated Broerman in the No.1 singles match with a pair of 6-3 sets after Campos made easy work of Federikke Svarre 6-1, 6-2.

The match-clinching point came from Stanojevic in the No.2 singles match. The freshman picked up her 12th-straight win after trading 6-2 sets with Sosnowska. The pair battled to 5-5 in the third set before Stanojevic captured the next two games to win 7-5.

With the match decided, Gonzaga made up some ground with wins in the No.4 and No.5 singles matches. Tokac fell in the first set 6-1, then was up 5-1 in the second before Jenna Sloan stormed back to take a 6-5 lead. Tokac forced a tiebreaker where she had another 5-1 lead but ended up falling 9-7. Ecton fell in the No.5 match to Kianna Oda 6-4, 6-3.

The final match of the day had Puzak against Aitken. Puzak won the first 6-4 then fell in the second 6-3. She burst out to a quick 8-3 lead in the third set tiebreak, ultimately winning 10-4.

The Buffaloes head to Portland next weekend to take on Portland State and the University of Portland.

On The Win
It's good for the team. Like I said yesterday, we feel like we are making some good progress. It's nice for the team, for them to win a match and have that progress be validated in a more tangible way. From yesterday when we played Baylor to today I thought the team got better with really good energy. Obviously, we've been dealing with some adversity. Hopefully we can keep building going on this.

On Maria and Caroline
I'm glad that they won, but once again, we're happy wherever we can get four points from. Today we got five so at the end the day wherever we can get four from, we're happy. Nice job by Caroline and Maria, and Mila who is a freshmen, clinching the match for the first time. It was good environment. It was tough, Gonzaga's a good team. Happy with the result and excited to get ready for next week.

PORTLAND – Colorado women's tennis program finished off the sweep of the Portland schools Saturday, defeating the University of Portland 4-2 here for the Buffaloes' third-straight win.

Colorado (3-3) pulls to .500 as freshman Mila Stanojevic clinched her 13th-straight singles victory after Portland (2-3) took the doubles point to open the match.

After dropping the doubles point despite Betina Tokac and Ellen Puzak picking up their third doubles win in four matches, Colorado went on a singles winning spree to clinch the match. Maria Campos started things off with a win in the No.3 singles match over Neli Sunjic 6-2, 6-1. Portland reclaimed the lead momentarily after Iva Zelic defeated Caroline Pozo in the No.1 singles match 6-4, 6-2, but after that the Buffs were rolling.

Antonia Balzert picked up a crucial win to tie the match in the No.2 singles match with a pair of 6-4 sets against Sally Pethybridge. Stanojevic set up match point for Colorado taking the No.4 singles match with a quick pair of 6-1 sets against Marija Elenova. The fate of the match rested in senior Ky Ecton's hands again after Rimona Rouf took the first set against Tokac 7-5 in the No.5 singles match.

Ecton, who clinched the match for Colorado on Friday against Portland State, got the upper hand on Jana Tanevska in the No.6 singles match with a key 6-4 set victory. Ecton repeated the process to seal the win as Tokac was battling hard in the second set 6-6 when the dual was decided and the match was abandoned.

BOULDER – The Colorado women's tennis team defeated No.71-ranked Iowa 4-1 here Sunday afternoon for its fourth-straight victory.

The Buffaloes (4-3) picked up the first ranked win under head coach Anthony Pham after securing the doubles point in a tiebreak set over Iowa (4-4) and closing out with three of the first four matches.

Mila Stanojevic and Antonia Balzert teamed up and took the first doubles match in the No.2 position 6-4. After Megan Forster and Ky Ecton fell 6-3 in the No.3 doubles match it all came down to Caroline Pozo and Maria Campos in the No.1 doubles match.

Pozo and Campos fought to a 5-4 lead before dropping the next two games. The Buffs took a quick 40-0 lead and tied things up off Pozo's serve and force a tiebreak. The teams fought to a 3-3 tie before Iowa took a crucial 6-5 lead. Iowa double faulted and returned the serve to Colorado at 6-6 where Pozo finished it off with a pair of aces to close out the match and win the doubles point.

After clinching the doubles point, Campos made quick work in the No.3 singles match by taking down Michelle Bacalla 6-3, 6-4 and give CU a 2-0 advantage.

Pozo and Balzert battled back in the No.1 and No.3 singles matches, respectfully, after each dropped the first set 6-4. They both rallied in the second to take those sets by a score of 6-3. Heading into the third set, Balzert took a 2-0 lead on Samantha Maddix while Pozo was down 2-0 to Marisa Schmidt. Balzert went down 5-4 but dominated the next game with a 40-0 advantage before tying it up 5-5. The next game made it to 40-40 when her opponent double faulted to give Balzert the lead, and it was all smooth sailing from there to a 7-5 victory in the No.2 singles match and a 3-0 lead. Pozo finished the match with a 6-1 third set loss to give Iowa its first point.

The deciding match fell to Forster in the No.4 singles match. Forster, who celebrated her 22nd birthday today, took the first set on Samantha Gillis 6-3, then dominated the second to a 6-0 win to clinch the victory.

Due to travel time, the final two matches were abandoned with both Stanojevic and Betina Tokac up a set in the No.5 and No.6 singles matches, respectfully.

Colorado heads into Pac-12 play on a four-match win streak and will be tested when No.56-ranked UCLA comes to town Friday at 1 p.m. followed by No.12 USC Sunday at 10 a.m. This will be the first trip to Boulder for the L.A. schools since 2018, and the Buffs have never defeated either team with a combined 0-22 record.

On The Ranked Win
I'm happy for the ladies. We had a tough start to the year, we played three ranked teams and were competitive but couldn't push through and I feel like we're starting to kind of hit our stride. It's good to see the team push through today because it was a complete total team effort.

On Having The Team Healthy
At the end of the day, we're trying to find four points. We have nine members on the team and we feel confident each and every one of them can go out and play. But it was nice to have Maria and Megan back healthy. We feel that we have a lot of depth on the team and today, it helped.

On What Win Means For Pac-12 Play
I think it just continues to give us some belief. Iowa was a good team. For us, the focus is on us doing the right things over and over and getting into good habits. It gives us some validity to what we're doing.

Highlights -

Today's match is in process. (Per the below, looks like the Trojans won the doubles point.)

Forgot that the team has a (believe re-scheduled) match this morning against the Air Force Academy. (From the scoring link, the AFA won the doubles point. In singles, 1-3 are in action so far, with the Buffs having won 2 of the 3 1sg sets.)

The team played tough, but going 0-3 in the 3 set matches they had, along with their continuing doubles issues, led to a tough tight loss in Pullman.

Great for the team to get back to winning ways with a tight win, and doing it in Laramie, what seems to be a tough out for MANY different Buff squads!

Preview from a few days ago for this Duck match -

"
BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's tennis team hosts No.36-ranked Oregon Sunday at 11 a.m. at the CU South Campus Tennis Complex but will move the match indoors to the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center at 10 a.m. if weather becomes a factor.

The Buffaloes (6-10, 0-6 Pac-12) are coming off a sweep against Wyoming in Laramie and hope to ride that momentum into the first conference win of the season. The last time the Ducks were in Boulder, Colorado picked up the first sweep against a Pac-12 opponent in CU history.
...

The Buffs will host a small alumni event Friday after practice and then host an alumni reunion during Sunday's match.

SCOUTING THE DUCKS
No.36 Oregon comes to Boulder with an 11-5 overall record and 3-3 record in Pac-12 play. The Ducks have mostly played at home with a 9-1 record including winning three-straight against No.25 Arizona State 4-3, Washington State 5-2 and No.20 Washington 4-0. Oregon will face BYU and Utah before coming to Boulder.

Karin Young leads the Ducks with a 13-1 record this spring on a 12-match win streak. The team is 54-30 in singles matches this spring and 24-13 in doubles.
"

(As the article states, Oregon was scheduled to play BYU and Utah before heading to Boulder. Looking at their schedule, looks like the Ducks won both, both by TIGHT 4-3 scores.)

Looks like the Buffs were competitive, but can't quite get the win over the Ducks.

Team ends the home portion of their season with a BUSY 3 match in 5 day stretch starting Wednesday-

"
BOULDER – The Colorado women's tennis team hosts the last three home matches of the season this week, starting with Wednesday's match against No.65 Denver that has been moved to 11 a.m. in the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center.

The Buffaloes (6-11, 0-7 Pac-12) made the time change against Denver due to forecasted high wind speed. The team is coming off a 4-1 loss to No.36 Oregon.

Colorado starts a streak of five-straight ranked opponents with No.65 Denver before facing No.30 Arizona State on Friday, No.44 Arizona on Sunday and then closing out the season at No.46 Utah. The team has a dozen ranked matches on the schedule and successfully upset No.71 Iowa at home at the end of February.

The team continues to be led by freshman Mila Stanojevic with a 10-6 singles record this spring. Directly behind her is fellow freshman Betina Tokac with six wins, followed by Megan Forster and Antonia Balzert with five. Colorado has won just less than 40 percent of its singles matches this dual season.

In doubles, the Buffs fought admirably against Oregon with Caroline Pozo and Maria Campos falling 7-5 in the No.1 doubles match and Ky Ecton and Stanojevic leading 6-5 in the No.2 doubles match before the point was clinched. Tokac and Ellen Puzak have the best dual record at 4-4 as the team has a .250 winning percentage in doubles match this spring.

Both Friday and Sunday's matches look favorably with weather and will try to be contested outdoors at the CU South Campus Tennis Complex. Friday's match is scheduled for 1 p.m., followed by an 11 a.m. start for senior day Sunday.

The Buffs will celebrate three departing seniors on Sunday, Megan Forster, Ky Ecton and Caroline Pozo.
