BOULDER – The Colorado women's tennis team brought out the brooms Wednesday afternoon, sweeping in-state rival and No.67-ranked Denver here by a score of 4-0.

The win is the first for Colorado (7-11, 0-7 Pac-12) against Denver (10-7) in six tries and the first sweep of the Pioneers since 1997.

Colorado opened the match winning the doubles point thanks to a 6-2 win in the No.3 doubles match with Betina Tokac and Ellen Puzak defeating Tatum Burger and Andrea Burguete. CU clinched the point with a win in the No.2 doubles match as Ky Ecton and Mila Stanojevic defeated Taylor Melville and Toni Nelson 6-4.

Moving to the top three singles matches, Caroline Pozo dropped the first set to Melville 6-1. She bounced back and dominated the second and third sets 6-3, 6-1 to give CU its second team point.

In the No.1 match, Antonia Balzert battled with Anna Riedmiller who was undefeated in dual matches against the Buffs. Balzert found herself down 5-3 in the first set but rallied to win the next three games. Riedmiller forced a tiebreak but Balzert had momentum and won it by a score of 7-3. The second set was similar with Balzert taking the early lead 4-2 before dropping the next three games. Facing set point, Balzert rallied to win the next three games and secure the win 7(3)-6, 7-5.

The final match came down to Megan Forster in the No.3 singles match against Camille Anderson. Forster fell in the first set 7-5, but like Pozo she rallied and destroyed the second and third sets to win 5-7, 6-3, 6-1.

The ranked win is the second this season for Colorado after they defeated No.71 Iowa earlier in the season. CU finishes out its home schedule Friday against No.20 Arizona State a 1 p.m. before taking on No.49 Arizona for senior day Sunday at 11 a.m.

On The Upset
We are happy for the ladies. This was by far the best match we played all year. Complete match. Everyone played a role. We were just talking, me, Brian and Hailey are super proud of the ladies, and it was a gutsy performance because Denver is always good. We haven't beat them since 2015 so just happy and proud of them.

On Pozo's Comeback
Talking about gutsy, she woke up Monday with a sore throat and sick and didn't get to practices yesterday. To put out a performance like that is huge and huge for the team.

On Antonia Defeating Riedmiller
Riedmiller's obviously a good player. She made it the finals of our regionals tournament this fall. She's normally nationally ranked. That's a really good job by Toni to just hanging in there and fighting and just getting through those tough moments. We talked about finding a way, she found a way today. That was huge for her, huge for the team. Hats off to her.

BOULDER – The Colorado women's tennis team closed out its home season on the highest of notes here Sunday, sending its three seniors home with a 6-1 upset over No.49-ranked Arizona.

Colorado (8-12, 1-8 Pac-12) picked up its first conference win of the season behind four wins from the seniors, taking the doubles point from Arizona (15-9, 3-6) and capturing three of the first four singles matches.

Seniors Ky Ecton, Megan Forster and Caroline Pozo all left their marks on the day. Pozo joined up with Antonia Balzert to win the No.1 doubles match 6-3, and just seconds later Ecton along with Mila Stanojevic took the No.2 doubles match by the same score.

After Maria Campos fell in the No.3 singles match 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 against Midori Castillo, Pozo reclaimed the lead with a tight three-set win over Kayla Wilkins in the No.2 singles match. Pozo took the first set 6-2 but dropped the second by a score of 6-3. The graduate student dominated the third set to give CU the lead again with a 6-3 third set.

Balzert picked up the next point, battling hard with Salma Ziouti in the No.1 singles match. The pair traded 6-4 sets, then in the third Balzert fell into a 3-0 hole. She quickly climbed out and reclaimed the lead at 5-4, then closed out the victory with another 6-4 set.

As fitting as possible, the match came down to Forster in the No.4 singles match. With her fellow four-year senior Ecton by her side cheering her on, Forster took early control against Khim Iglupas and never looked back. She took the first set 6-3, then rallied to the win with a 6-3 second set victory.

Stanojevic closed out the next match against Kirsten Pelle. She took the first set 6-3, then rallied from down 5-4 to win the second set 7-5. Tokac was the final match of the day in the No.6 singles against Belen Nevenhoven, taking the first set 6-3 and the second.

Colorado closes out the regular season next weekend with a trip to Utah before beginning play in the Pac-12 Conference Championship Tournament.

On The Match
It was fun to be part of, obviously it's stressful, but we keep talking literally every match about finding a way and today we found a way. We played our best doubles point of the year but we've been building and playing really good doubles the last couple of weeks and it's great for them to see the results. Arizona's a tough team, they've had a good year. I'm just really proud of everyone. Great way to send the seniors off.

On The Seniors
Going into this match we try to take them match by match but we knew we wanted to get this one. With it being senior day at home, the team one through nine really showed up for each other. We found ways and just really proud of them for sticking together a tough one today.

On What This Win Means Going Into Utah And Pac-12
It's huge. You want to be playing your best tennis at the end, and the last two to three weeks we've been building towards this. To see us kind of get through this match and in the fashion that we did was great to pick our confidence. Utah's had a good year too and we're going to go there and compete our butts off and try and get another one.

BOULDER – The Colorado women's tennis team closes out the 2022 regular season this Saturday against No.54-ranked Utah at 12 p.m. in Salt Lake City.

The Buffaloes (8-12, 1-8 Pac-12) are coming off an impressive week that included wins over No.67 Denver in a sweep and No.49 Arizona 6-1 on senior day. The Utes (13-10, 2-7 Pac-12) dropped one spot in the polls and have lost seven-straight matches and nine out of their last 10.

Colorado had an extraordinary week, picking up a pair of doubles wins in route to their upset wins. This is the first time since 2015 that CU has had three ranked wins in a season, though from 2017 to 2021 the rankings only went to the top-50.
...

The Utes are on a seven-match losing streak, all coming against ranked opponents. Their past nine out of 10 matches they have lost all came against ranked opponents as well. Utah started with nine-straight wins before losing to Denver 4-3. They picked up another three-straight wins including against No.54 BYU and No.21 USC. After that they dropped matches to UCLA and Washington, defeated Washington State, then went on their skid. Utah was swept by Cal, Stanford and Loyola Marymount, and lost four matches 4-3 against Cal State Fullerton, Oregon, Arizona and ASU.

Utah is led by Linda Huang, the 119th-ranked player with a 20-12 record.
