2023 Colorado Football Schedule & Future Schedules

CSU gives up revenue every time they play a football game, Nik. That's not anything new.

ok, I'm trying to understand your assertion that there's more money in a neutral site game for ASU than keeping it at home. the media revenue isn't it as that's split evenly between conference members. we agree it's not attendance. Haven't dug in, but I'm not believing it's merchandise and concessions.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but help me out -- where do you see the additional money coming from for ASU if they give up their home game with us?
I said it in the beginning. It's a guaranteed appearance fee like you get from a bowl game. The money's more than you earn from a home game. Probably have a ticket allotment to sell and then a piece for above that, too.

apologies, I wasn't aware that an appearance fee was in play and didn't see your previous comment about that.

assuming ASU gets an appearance fee north of $3m, you make a good point. do you have some information on where that fee would come from (assume you're hearing rumors of a corporate sponsor)?

Here's one from 8 years ago where they say that Alabama & VA Tech split $5M for the Kickoff neutral site opener.

I'm not following. you specifically used 'revenue', not 'earnings' -- was that intentional?

I was dunking on CSU more than anything with that take, but my perception is their FB program is a fairly large money pit for them RN. Here's what I'm talking about-we got $33M ish in revenue from the Pac 12 deal last year. From the MWC TV deal, CSU pulls in about $4M yearly. That program has to be something people want to come see in person because the TV revenue isn't the thing at that level that it is for a school like CU (possible exclusion for the service academies-who are like BYU in the sense that they have a built in fanbase), and they haven't hit that standard (for lack of a better team) since Sparkles left there. They were mediocre under Bobo, bad under Addazio, and I didn't see a program that looked like it was trending in the right direction when I watched them play this year.

Factor in the new stadium (which I'm sure they have a fair amount of debt on).......and uh oh.

who do you think is going to be the desert version of Chik Fil A? Does it make financial sense for the Pac to pony up that kind of money if a corporation doesn't bite?

so, you didn't actually mean revenue.

How should I know who would buy sponsorship rights? It was just leaked last night by our coach.

You stated ASU would make more by moving the game off campus. I guess I just assumed you had some information behind that point that led you to make the claim.

Looking at ASU's recent years, they do commonly play week 1 at home with a 7pm MST game. In 2019, they played a home August game vs Sean Lewis coached Kent State. Another August in 2016, so two in the last seven years.

Who is ASU's remaining kicker now that one of them has transferred to CU?

How does he feel about kicking in Glendale vs Tempe?
How does he feel about kicking in Las Vegas vs Glendale or Tempe?
Does he have a high school soccer background?
If so, did he have any college soccer offers?
What is his career long?

I think this thread needs to arc back to topics that we can all agree are critical to our enjoyment of the game.

So, pretend you're a network executive.

Which game will you pay more money for:

A. ASU vs CU in late September or early October. You don't know if either team will be any good; they both have new coaches and dramatically different rosters than last year. You also know that you will almost certainly have some ranked and/or "name" teams playing each other that you'll be competing with for eyeballs.

B. ASU vs CU as a week zero game. Both teams have new coaches. One team has a national name coach that every college football fan in the country will be curious to see how they do "in the bigs." You will *not* have to schedule against any other ranked or "name" teams playing each other. Oh, and every college football fan in the entire country is also in "let's get this party started" mode and most of their teams are *not* playing, so if you give them a game with any reasonable story line, they're gonna watch.

It's pretty ****ing obvious to me that game B is much more valuable, and of course you're going to pay more money to broadcast that over A.

Will you pay enough more to guarantee ASU more money than they'd get hosting game A? Almost definitely.

I sort of can't believe that people don't see the obvious value that game B has over game A.

Now.. the only question in my mind is how, if you're the P12, you're ****ing over whoever owns the broadcast rights to the already scheduled TCU-CU game in week 1. Running with option B very obviously decreases the value of that particular game broadcast.

But... the P12 DGAF about the value of that game, because it's not included in the P12 broadcast agreement. It's either in the B12's agreement and/or TCU's agreement. **** 'em.

Make no mistake, scheduling CU for a week 0 game is a power move in media rights money land - you're not just adding value to your own product, you're removing value from someone else's product.
