Buffs Hit the Road for Two Matches

By: Aiden Tank, Athletic Communications

BOULDER –
After a week off, the Colorado Buffaloes tennis team will return to the courts in Las Vegas to take on UNLV and Penn State.

After over a month of matches on the road, the Buffs will wrap up their nonconference schedule in Las Vegas against two teams that have combined for a 12-1 record so far this season: UNLV on Friday (Feb. 21) and Penn State on Saturday (Feb. 22).

Colorado did not play any matches last week after beating New Mexico 4-0 on February 8 after bouncing back from the only loss this season at Illinois. They will use the time off to prepare for the rest of the season.

"The time off was much needed," head coach Anthony Pham said. "We were able to regroup and get a couple of days off. This weekend, the team is excited to play two very good teams, UNLV and Penn State. We have had a good week of practice and are ready to get out and compete."

These two matches will end both the nonconference schedule and the season's longest road trip, consisting of five matches spanning 32 days between home matches. The team has grown through the extended road trip.
"I think this team has done a pretty good job of taking it match by match," Pham said. "We have been on the road a lot, which has allowed the team to grow closer. This weekend is no different. The team has shown a lot of maturity, going about their business every day."

The Buffs have relied on two freshmen this season: Lera Alexin and Rixt van der Werff. The two first-year players have combined to win seven matches in doubles and singles.

Van der Werff, after missing the first four matches of the season, won her first match against the No. 111 player in the country. She remains 1-0 on the season after her following match remained unfinished.

Alexin has filled in wherever the team has needed her early in the season. With players missing matches, she has competed in all but one in singles and all six in doubles with two different partners. In singles, Alexin has played four matches at No. 6 and one at the No. 4 spot, and in doubles, she has played five at No. 3 and one at No. 2 doubles.

There have been matches where Alexin was put in at the last second, and each time, she has delivered. Winning her last four doubles and three singles matches.

"Lera and Rixt have been very welcome additions," Pham said on the two freshmen. "They fit really well with the rest of the group and work hard. Lera is a freshman by year, but she is very diligent with her work. She is rock solid at everything, a good student, works hard, and is always prepared. Each time her name's been called, she's gone out and competed."

Both matches will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the Fertitta Tennis Complex against UNLV on Feb. 21 and Penn State on Feb. 22.

Colorado Cruises Past UNLV

By: Aiden Tank, Athletic Communications

LAS VEGAS –
Colorado's fast start led the Buffaloes over UNLV 4-1 Friday morning at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

Colorado (6-1) extended its regular season winning streak against non-Power Five teams to 22 matches, giving UNLV (6-1) its first loss of the season.

"Proud of our ladies today," head coach Anthony Pham said. "We competed our behinds off and are learning to lean in and embrace adversity. We look forward to taking on a tough Penn State squad tomorrow."

A last-second lineup change in doubles saw Anya Nelson and Rixt van der Werff see the court together for the first time. The duo clinched the doubles point following Lera Alexin and Mila Stanojevic's opening win.

The two doubles wins gave the Buffs the doubles point for the fifth time this season and second in a row.

Tokac and Alexin extended the lead, each extending their singles win streaks. Alexin won the first match at No. 6 singles, her fourth straight victory. Tokac, at No. 3 singles, won her seventh straight match to start the spring season. This is the second straight season beginning with at least a seven-match win streak after starting the season with nine straight a year ago.

After UNLV scored their only point of the day, Stanojevic brought it home with a win at No. 1 singles. She came in on a two-match slide but played the hero, clinching the match in straight sets.

The team has a home match for the 1st time in a month, and it's to start conference play. And, both matches this weekend are currently scheduled to be held outdoors!

Preview in front of this weekend's conference openers - https://cubuffs.com/news/2025/2/27/tennis-buffs-open-big-12-play-at-home

Based on the rankings noted in the preview, sounds like #72 CU will be underdogs in both matches, but they upset far higher ranked teams while in the Pac 12, so I'm sure will be looking to use the home advantage to help them get W's in both contests.

Buffs Open Big 12 Play at Home

By: Aiden Tank, Athletic Communications

BOULDER –
In the first Big 12 match since 2011, the Colorado Buffaloes tennis team will host two former conference rivals, Iowa State and Kansas, this weekend at the CU South Tennis Courts.

After 5,055 days, Colorado will take the court for a Big 12 match, and the first time as a ranked team since 2010 after joining the expanded rankings at No. 72 this week. The Buffs start with No. 54 Iowa State on Friday, followed by No. 42 Kansas on Sunday.

"I talked to the team this past weekend about this being the start of the second part of our season," head coach Anthony Pham said. "Right now, everything we play is within the conference, and we know every match is critical. There's a lot of great opportunities for us. It's just a matter of us stepping up and trying to take advantage of those."

Not only is this the first conference match, but it is also the first home match in over a month after the Buffs went 3-2 on their five-match road trip.

"It's always nice to be home," Pham said. "You like to play on your home courts, sleep in your own bed, have your own routine. We're looking forward to a good crowd on Friday and Sunday; we'll do our best again to take advantage of the opportunity."

The newly ranked No. 72 Buffs are coming off a tough 4-3 loss to Penn State, now No. 36 in the country, after leading 3-0. The only other loss on the schedule came from No. 47 Illinois, 4-2. The Buffs had chances to win in both losses, and the team is looking to learn from those in the future.

"At the end of the day, you have to execute, and we're putting ourselves in the right position," Pham commented. "There's a lot of belief in this group; they're very resilient. They know what we're capable of. We will continue to put ourselves in that position, and sooner or later, we will push through that door. It's always disappointing to lose close matches, but we're a handful of points away from executing those moments."

The weekend action will start on Friday against No. 54 Iowa State, moving the time to 2:00 p.m. at the CU South Tennis Courts. This will be the first home outdoor match of the season.

Historically, Colorado has controlled the matchup, holding an all-time record of 28-5 against the Cyclones. Since leaving the Big 12, Iowa State won the only matchup in 2021 as part of a three-match winning streak against the Buffs.

Returning to the courts on Sunday at 2:00 p.m., the Buffs will also take on No. 42 Kansas at the CU South Tennis Courts. Before leaving the Big 12, Colorado won five of the last six matches against Kansas and the last overall Big 12 regular season victory on April 11, 2010.

Looking at the full rankings (https://colleges.wearecollegetennis...ionType=DIV1&matchFormat=TEAM&date=2025-02-25), heading into Big 12 play there are 12 conference teams in the Top 75, with the Buffs 11th of those 12. The conference looks to be led, at least rankings-wise, by nationally ranked #13 Texas Tech and #14 Baylor, followed by a pack of 3 teams in the mid 20's (#23 ASU, #25 OSU and #26 Arizona).

Buffs Fall In Default Decision To Iowa State

By: Aiden Tank, Athletic Communications

BOULDER –
Colorado's return to the Big 12 ended with a sour taste in its mouth as a questionable call ended up awarding the victory to Iowa State despite the Buffaloes leading the match at the time Friday afternoon at the CU South Tennis Courts.

In the end, the official result will reflect a 4-3 win for No. 54 Iowa State, who improve to 6-2, 1-0 in the Big 12. The Buffaloes fall to 6-3, 0-1.

After a back-and-forth affair between two old Big 12 rivals, the match was tied 3-3 after Aya El Sayed won a hard-fought, three-set match at No. 2 singles. That left just Betina Tokac. In a heated, back-and-forth match, Tokac found herself down 5-1 in the first set, and after being penalized for being overruled by the official, she came back to win that set in a tiebreaker.

In her second set, tied 5-5, she was overruled again, the third infraction of which is a game penalty. She called the ball out at deuce in the fifth set, was overruled to go down 6-5, and then lost that set, 7-5, due to the penalty. She came out quickly in the third set to take a 4-1 lead about the time El Sayed tied the match 3-3. After losing the next two games, she called a serve out and was overruled for the fourth time, the penalty resulting in a "default" result of her match and thus ended the day for the Buffs.

The officials were unwilling to comment on the record but explained the new rule the Intercollegiate Tennis Association instituted this season following the match. After two incorrect line calls deemed by the official, the player will be penalized a point; after the third infraction, the penalty will be a game, and the fourth infraction will result in a default and the match awarded to the other team.
...

"Congrats to Iowa State," head coach Anthony Pham said. "We talked to our team about how every match in the Big 12 will be a battle and today was no different. Obviously, it's tough to come out on the losing end of it, but we put ourselves in the right position to succeed. It was unfortunate for it to end the way it did, but I know what this team is about, and I know we're going to be resilient and respond on Sunday against Kansas."

Buffs Look to Bounce Back in Utah

By: Aiden Tank, Athletic Communications

BOULDER –
Colorado goes back on the road for two matches against BYU and Utah as the Buffaloes search for its first Big 12 win in almost 15 years.

After a tough weekend back in Boulder, where Colorado (6-4, 0-2 Big 12) lost its two opening matches, will look to bounce back in the second week of conference play. They will take on No. 73 BYU on Thursday at 12:00 p.m. and Utah at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.

"We're looking to bounce back," head coach Anthony Pham expressed. "Both BYU and Utah are good teams, and at this point, we're going to continue to control what we can control. That's what we preach to the team. We're going to keep going out there, battling, and putting ourselves in the position to have success."

The Buffs were without graduate student Aya El Sayed against Kansas and were forced to experiment with new lineup combinations in both doubles and singles. Different lineups have been nothing new this season, as they have taken the doubles point in the last five matches, playing with five different pairings.

"The great thing about this group is, we know we have depth," Pham said. "We feel confident in everyone we put out there. We've been doing a good job in doubles executing and getting that point. Now it's just a matter of us finding ways to get to four points in singles."

With each loss this season, the Buffs have had opportunities to flip the script, and as Pham has said, it will come down to a few points that will decide the match. In the four losses, Colorado has dropped 10 individual matches in the third set and went 2-5 in sets that went to a tiebreaker.

Pham is confident his team is doing all the right things and will find a way to put it all together.

"It's just a matter of finding ways to get the job done on that particular day," Pham said. "We've seen that in our four losses, it comes down to a handful of points. It's just continuing to put ourselves in the right position and trusting ourselves. Keep trying to do the right things because when you do the right things over and over again, success follows you."

Colorado will look for success starting against No. 73 BYU. After beginning the matchup, historically losing 20 straight matches, the Buffs have won the last three. Including a 4-3 win back in 2023 with wins by El Sayed and Mila Stanojevic.

The Buffs will play former Pac-12 foe Utah on Saturday. The Utes lead the all-time series 23-14, including the last four matches. Colorado will look to win its first match in Salt Lake City since 2000.

Although they haven't played together since February 8, Ema Bubalo and Anya Nelson have moved up to No. 19 in this week's ITA doubles ranking. That is the highest in-season ranking for a doubles duo or singles player since Kathleen Cummings ranked ninth in the final ranking of 1982.

For the 4th straight match, the team wins the doubles point but ends up losing a tight one overall, this time to BYU 3-4. The final singles match was a 3 set loss, and in another they had a tiebreaker in the 1st set, so they definitely had opportunities.
(Once again they were without veteran and their typical #2 singles and team member in either #1 or #2 doubles, Aya El Sayed.)

Hopefully they can get that 1st conference win Sunday vs. the Utes.

Colorado Travels for Two Matches in Texas

By: Aiden Tank, Athletic Communications

BOULDER –
Colorado will take the court on the road against two top 50 teams as the Buffaloes look to end a five-match losing streak against No. 20 Baylor and No. 44 TCU.

No matter the record, Colorado will compete across the net in each match against whoever is there. This weekend is no different.

"We are looking forward to getting back and competing against Baylor and TCU," head coach Anthony Pham said. "Baylor and TCU are both good teams and will give us good opportunities to continue getting better."

The team will continue to take positives from every single match. One of those positives has been doubles. Colorado has secured the doubles point in seven straight matches and 10 total this season. No matter what pairings have taken the court, success has followed.

"In any match, there's plenty of positives you can take," Pham commented. "For us, we have to keep focusing on those positives, doubles, obviously being one of those. At the end of the day, we just have to keep doing the right things. When you're doing the right things, keep focusing on executing in those situations and controlling what you can control. Doubles obviously have been a positive for us, and that's something we would like to keep doing."

With the success in doubles, the team has looked to find their wins in singles. Last weekend, Pia Rebec was the only player to win her singles match on both days. She has started to find her footing in singles, winning three of the last four matches, all in straight sets. This spring, Rebec is posting a 6-3 record in singles.

Looking forward to this weekend, Colorado will have the opportunity to compete against two teams that haven't been common opponents. Starting on Friday, the Buffs will look for their first win against Baylor since 2007 and the first win in Waco since 1998.

This is the second time the team has traveled to Waco after some of them competed in the Baylor Invite in September. They will make the trip one more time for the Big 12 Championships at the end of the season. This will be the first night match on the road this season; action will start at 5:00 p.m. on ESPN+.

Following on Sunday, the team will stay in-state to take on No. 44 TCU for only the fourth time in program history. The Horn Frogs have won all three matchups so far, with two coming in Fort Worth. This will be the first time competing against TCU since 1998. Doubles will begin at 12:00 p.m. on ESPN+.

Each match is different and has a different makeup, and Pham wants his team to attack each match controlling what they can, "Every match is different. Every match and every team we play is different. Whether it's at home or away, they're just completely separate entities. For us, it's just attacking each match, each team, each day to the best of our ability. Just focus on the things we can do; Focus on what we can control. Keep doing the right things and whatever is in our control, we will continue to focus on that."

The team had yet another oh so close result yesterday against the #20 Bears, as they just lost the doubles point (the deciding match went to a tiebreaker), then can't quite finish it off even though they won the 1st set in all 6 singles matches and lose 2-4.

Based on the basic score, a 0-4 loss, it would at 1st glance seem today's loss to #44 TCU was the worst so far this conference season. However, looking at the scores (see https://cubuffs.com/news/2025/3/16/tennis-buffs-fall-to-no-44-tcu for the article), the Buffs won the 1st set in 5 of 6 singles matches and forced 3 sets in every singles match except 1 discontinued match, and in that one the CU player won the 1st set so it would have either been a Buff win or at minimum another 3rd setter. (In addition to still missing its #2 singles player and key doubles player Aya El Sayed, who's been out since the 2nd conference match, the team today had to play without another key doubles player and typical #4 singles player Ema Bubalo.)

Hope the team can start to get healthy soon!
(The next matches scheduled are this coming weekend in Boulder against UCF and Houston.)

Buffs Back Home For Two Matches

By: Aiden Tank, Athletic Communications

BOULDER – Colorado returns home for its longest home stand of the season, beginning with No. 17 UCF and Houston this weekend.

Coming off a tough stretch for the team, Colorado is looking to use the home stand to create some momentum from now on. The Buffs will start with a tough opponent in No. 17 UCF on Friday and follow it up with Houston on Sunday.

"We're happy to be back home," head coach Anthony Pham said. "It doesn't get any easier for us; both UCF and Houston are good programs. We have to keep controlling what we can control. Our effort, our fight, and the way we battled the last handful of matches have been great. Now, we have to try to find ways to make a couple more plays. We will keep pushing forward and put ourselves in the best position."

The Buffs will look to use the two weeks back in Boulder to get back to their routines and find comfort as they continue in Big 12 Play.

"Anytime you are at home, it helps," Pham commented. "When they have their regular routine and comforts, it can make a difference. We are happy to be at home and playing in front of our own fans."

Starting on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the CU South Tennis Courts, the Buffs will be across the net from the Knights for the first time in program history. The Knights are coming in as one of the hottest teams in the conference, currently the only team in the Big 12 without a conference loss at 14-1 and 6-0 in the Big 12. UCF has three ranked singles players, and one ranked double's pairing coming to Boulder.

The Buffs will return to the courts Sunday at 2:00 p.m. against Houston. Due to weather conditions, the location will be announced following the match on Friday. This will be the ninth meeting against the Cougars and only the third since 2000. Colorado holds a 4-3-1 record, with the first-ever meeting in 1979 a tie. This will be only the second matchup in Boulder; the Cougars won the initial meeting 5-4 in 1982.

"Every team we play in the Big 12 is good; UCF and Houston are no different," Pham said. "We approach every match the same. We've got to take care of what we take can care of. Whoever's playing across the net is going to be good. We have to take care of our side of the net, compete and battle, and continue to be in the right position."

On Colorado's side of the net, they have been dealing with injuries throughout conference play, which has given different players opportunities at different spots in the lineup. Last weekend, Anya Nelson and Betina Tokac both played different roles than they had previously this season. Nelson had been almost exclusively a doubles player this season but made her first conference singles appearance against TCU. She was leading in the third set when the match was clinched. Tokac, on the flip side, after playing mostly singles this season, made a doubles appearance with new partner Pia Rebec. With Rebec, they led 6-5 in doubles when the point was clinched, ending the match.

With new players in different spots, the team is still fighting against some of the best teams in the country, which is what Pham has emphasized.

"One thing with our group, they just continue to step up," Pham said. "Whoever's name is called, they step in and battle. That's one thing we've been extremely proud of with our group. We try to emphasize to prepare every day like you might have that opportunity. Whoever's been put in the lineup, whether it's singles, doubles, or playing both, they've stepped up and taken the opportunity and run with it."

A little over 4 hours until the scheduled opening serve of today's match with Houston. Note that today's match will be an indoors one at the Meadow Club.

Note - Interesting to me that the above post says there will be video coverage today, as the cubuffs schedule doesn't link to or note it and, as far as I can remember, CU hasn't ever included video coverage for any home tennis match. It will be great if they start to do so!

If they do, I'd guess it will be available on the Watch ESPN "Big 12 CrossCourt Cast" at https://www.espn.com/watch/player/_/id/e297c114-a7ec-4bd5-9c1f-abb51f4ee737 .

Buffs Snap Losing Streak, Take Down Houston at Home

By: Aiden Tank, Athletic Communications

BOULDER –
Colorado picked up wins at the top three singles positions and got the doubles point to defeat Houston 4-1 and end an eight-match losing streak Sunday afternoon at the Meadows Club. The win is the first Big 12 regular season victory in almost 15 years, with the Buffaloes spending much of that time in the Pac-12 conference.

After a string of heartbreaking losses, Colorado (7-9, 1-7 Big 12) ended its losing streak with a doubles win from Anya Nelson and Ema Bubalo and singles victories from Mila Stanojevic, Betina Tokac and Bubalo, sweeping the top half of the order.

"I'm happy for the team, I'm happy for our kids," head coach Anthony Pham said. "We've lost some tough ones, and they've done a good job of continuing to compete every time we go out and play. It's good for them to get on the other side of these matches."

Houston only played two doubles teams, so the Buffs only needed one match to take an early lead. That win was found by No. 45-ranked Bubalo and Nelson, winning their first match together since February 8 against New Mexico.

This is the 28th win as a doubles pair, the 10th most in program history.

When the action shifted to singles, the Buffs controlled the top of the order. Bubalo was first to finish with Tokac shortly after to open up a 3-0 lead. Stanojevic ran off six straight games in the third set to clinch the match at the top spot.

"I knew she would be a good player, and the match wouldn't be easy," Stanojevic commented on her match. "In the Big 12, you only have good opponents at one [No. 1 singles] you have to play well. I think I started out the match pretty well, whereas in the past weeks, I've started slow, losing the first set here and there, and then today, I was happy that I started off better. In the second set, I didn't take some of the chances that I had, but then in the third set, I was happy with how I turned it around."

With her singles win, Stanojevic now has the 23rd most singles wins at Colorado with 66 and 17th in total wins with 128.
...

"This year has been completely new for us, being in the Big 12, we've had to adjust in a lot of ways," Stanojevic said. 'We've had so many tough losses over the past weeks and getting a win hopefully can give us some momentum going into next weekend against Texas Tech."
