24-25 WBB Team

Way back in post #31, I'd given a few links for lists that attempt to show who's in the portal from what school and what if any school they've announced they've transferred to.

One of those links was for a list maintained by a Talia Goodman. Looks like she's got a new job at on3 (congrats to her), and her transfer list has also moved to that website. (As I type this, her list says there have been 1,361 D1 WBB players in the portal, of which 552 have announced new schools and 36 have withdrawn their names from the portal.)

(Note - Obviously not personally relevant to me in any way, but I am also casually interested to see what ends up happening with one of the frosh Buffs from this past season who announced she's transferring, 6'3" post Ruthie Loomis-Goltl. In mid-April I believe she was one of the 1st Buffs to find a new home when she signed with Idaho. But now, Idaho's coach (who evidently had strong connections to Ms. Loomis-Goltl's home state of Nebraska) just a few days ago (4/30) left Idaho after 1 season as head coach to become the head coach at South Dakota. Hope where ever she ends up (Idaho or ???) works out great for her.)

Good post.

With the new anarchy in college sports, being anyone other than an absolute blue chip is a crap shoot. As has been pointed out before on this site, the new world benefits roughly the upper 10%-15% or so of athletes. As to NIL on the payor side, the richest programs will usually dominate the bidding. Shocking, I tell ya.

As to your example, I hope Ruthie L-G has a nice college hoops experience and that whomever her new coach at Idaho turns out to be doesn’t run her off. Maybe the departing Idaho HC takes her to South Dakota. But in any event it’s completely out of her control. Welcome to the club.

My gut reaction is that the coaching staff has not replaced the level of talent that graduated (Sherrod, Miller, Whittaker & Nolan) or transferred (Vonleh & Sadler).

Nworie looks like a reach given she hasn't played basketball since her freshman season at a juco in Idaho. Two seasons of injuries doesn't make me optimisitc about her ability to make a significant contribution this coming season.

The other 3 inbound transfers (Diew, Garzon & Masogayo) may see some serious plalying time, but don't look to bring much offensive fire power. I know that Grazon is a three point shooter, but her stats don't stand out from Oklahoma State.

At this time I think the freshmen who could get some playing time are Sanders and Betson based on their HS resumés. Sanders in particular could have an impact.

Yup, no indication that the level of talent on the current roster is good enough to get them to the post season, at least not the NCAA tourney. Maybe the WNIT, maybe.

Still could give up to 3 more scholarships.
 
A big maybe in looking at the way too early top 25 rankings.

The team for next season is very inexperienced and one or two of the returning players has to become a team leader. That was lost with Sherrod graduating.
 
It’s a bummer that coming off the year we had we couldn’t land some bigger transfer names. NIL issue?

I think I've seen on Twitter that NIL is different for foreign players than for US players?

That may be why JR is recruiting foreign players.

Iowa is recruiting a big in the portal and they already have 15 scholarship players. Tje fans are thinking they can fund a scholarship for her with NIL money. I have no idea how that works, but that seems to be the route they think will happen.

The other option is they have promised a scholarship to a recuit that got hit by a car with her family at an AAU tournament in the summer before she was to attend Iowa. Coach Bluder said they would honor her scholarship for 4 years. She is still having lots of surgery but she is in Iowa City. She didn't travel to any of the NCAA games.

Fans are thinking they could put her on the NIL scholarship or an academic scholarship and avoid being over 15 basketball scholarships.
 
To be replaced by long time associated head coach Jan Jensen.

Bluder knows without Clark it's a rebuild no matter how many of her players are returning. She's made the money and it's time to enjoy her life.

I remember when Ceal retired from coaching and how much more relaxed she looked and when I asked her she said she was tired of recruiting and travel.

Now with NIL, Bluder doesn't have to play that game.
 
The Mens BB is going into a much tougher conference than the PAC12. The Womens BB, less.

Johanna Teder joins Colorado for 2024-25

BOULDER — Colorado women's basketball added to its backcourt with the addition of former Washington State guard Johanna Teder on Thursday.

Teder, a graduate transfer, missed all of the 2023-24 season and will have one year of eligibility.

"We are thrilled to have Johanna joining our Buff squad this year and I know that her experience and success at this level will allow her to have an immediate impact both on the court and in the locker room," head coach JR Payne expressed. "Being a combo guard, Jo's versatility and ability to play multiple guard positions is a huge addition to our ball club. It has been a challenge to play against Jo all these years, so it will be awesome to have her draining 3s for us instead of against us. Jo's success both on the court and in the classroom speaks volumes to her work ethic and desire to be great, which lines up perfectly with our program."

Teder was critical in the Cougar's 2023 Pac-12 Tournament Championship season. She started all 34 games in 2022-23 and finished fourth on the team with 7.9 points per game. Teder finished second on the Cougars that season with 59 3-point field goals, tying her for eighth in the Pac-12.

The Tartu, Estonia native shot 34.5% from behind the arc and scored in double figures in 15 games. Teder scored a season-high 17 in WSU's win over South Dakota State.

In the classroom, Teder earned 2023 Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll and was a CSC Academic All-District Team selection.

The 5-8 guard started all 86 games she played in her three years at WSU. She averaged 8.4 points and 2.3 assists.

Teder transferred to WSU after playing one season at South Plains College in Texas, where she earned First Team All-Conference honors and led SPC to a 32-1 record.

The addition of Teder enlarges the international presence on the 2024-25 roster. Colorado now has eight international players with Frida Formann (Denmark), Sara-Rose Smith (Australia), Tabitha Betson (Australia), Lior Garzon (Israel), Lova Lagerlid (Sweden), Erin Powell (UK) and JoJo Nworie (Nigeria).

Agree but why not assume that the Big 12 WBB is as tough as the Big 12 MBB? That would elevate the WBB program.

What does that even mean? If it was statistically worse , you don't just get to assume that's not the case. And how would doing so elevate anything? It is what it is. It won't be a cakewalk, but it sure won't be the pac

My point was that the B12 WBB isn't as good as the PAC 12 WBB was last year. And the B12 WBB is nowhere near as good as the B12 MBB. The CU men are in for a tough year, unfortunately.

Similarly, a great pickup line is, "If you can make yourself assume that I'm richer, more athletic and better looking than David Beckham, tonight could be a great time."
 
Regardless of what you think of the Big 12 v the Pac 12 in terms of WBB, the bottom line is that the Buffs are not going to have the talent they did last season and are going to have a tough time making the NCAA tourney in '25 with the roster they have now. Success on the court is going to require two to three newcomers to be 1st or 2nd team all-conference caliber performers.

So who on the current roster is going to have the immpact of Sherrod, Miller and Vonleh?

At PG it would have to be either Kindyll Wetta or Kennedy Sanders.

At power forward Diew, Betson or Masogayo.

In the post, Johnson or Nworie.

I figure that both Garzon and Teder will basically have the some role and impact (moree or less) as Maddie Nolan did last season.
