24-25 WBB Team

Received an email invitation to an invitation to An Evening With CU Women's Basketball on Oct 1 at the Champions Center. I guess they still like me because I make donations to the program.

I also received a Buffs license plate holder in the mail yesterday. I have not received one of those in years and was told they no longer sent them. Guess it's because of the rebrand to Big 12

I got my license plate holder, too!

Schedule released, with a scrimmage in Boulder starting things off October 27th (or 29th***?), the 1st official game on the road (in Laramie) Nov. 4th, 1st home game Nov. 7th and 1st Big 12 game (at home) Dec. 21st -
(***I'm assuming the 27th is right, but the text (but NOT the table) in the below article says the scrimmage is the 29th, while the below Instagram post says the 27th.)

BOULDER — The 2024-25 Colorado women's basketball schedule was made official by head coach JR Payne alongside the Big 12 Conference's schedule release on Thursday.

Colorado has a 29-game slate that features 16 games at the CU Events Center. The Buffs will play 11 non-conference games and 18 conference games in their first season back in the Big 12.

"We are very excited about the upcoming season and this year's team," Payne commented. "With many new faces and our rejoining of the Big 12 Conference, this will be an unbelievably exciting year! Our schedule will challenge us with various styles of play and push us to compete on the road as well."

The first chance to catch the Buffs in action will be in exhibition play against Colorado Mines on Oct. 29. The regular season will get underway with a Nov. 4 visit to Wyoming. Colorado's home opener will be three days later, on Nov. 7, against Northern Colorado.

Three of CU's first four games will be on the road with stops at Boise State (Nov. 10) and Nevada at the Tahoe Blue Event Center in Statesville, Nev. (Nov. 12). The Buffs will return home for a two-game stretch against Southern (Nov. 17) and Utah State (Nov. 19), before heading back on the road to Utah Tech (Nov. 27). November comes to a close with a marquee matchup against Louisville in Boulder on Nov. 30.

The non-conference schedule wraps up with a trio of home games against Tennessee Tech (Dec. 3), Southern Utah (Dec. 7), and Denver (Dec. 10).

All 18 of CU's Big 12 games will be Wednesday-Saturday matchups, a change from the Pac-12's Friday-Sunday slate. Teams will play three opponents home and away while facing six teams only at home and six opponents only on the road for a total of 18 Conference games. Opponents were selected based on a combination of geography, historical results and a poll of the coaches to best balance the schedule in terms of travel and competitiveness.

The Buffs' reintroduction to the Big 12 starts on Dec. 21 when West Virginia makes its inaugural visit to Boulder. CU's first road trip in the conference starts with a New Year's Day meeting with TCU, followed by its first visit to Baylor (Nov. 4), since Feb. 6, 2010.

The remainder of Colorado's home schedule features games against UCF (Jan. 8), Kansas (Jan. 11), Kansas State (Jan. 25), Texas Tech (Feb. 1), Arizona (Feb. 5), Houston (Feb. 15), Baylor (Feb. 19) and Arizona State (Feb. 26).

CU will make its first visits to West Virginia (Jan. 15) and Cincinnati (Jan. 18). The remaining road games include visits to BYU (Jan. 29), Iowa State (Feb. 8), Utah (Feb. 12), Oklahoma State (Feb. 22) and Texas Tech (Mar. 1).

The 2025 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship is set for Mar. 5-10 at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.

Times and TV information will be announced at a later date.

Good to see. Of course, if she wins the POST-SEASON award, that will be a GREAT thing to see.

Looking at the overall Big 12 release (https://big12sports.com/news/2024/1...asketball-preseason-awards-poll-revealed.aspx), she's the only Buff individually listed, with the team overall predicted to finish around the middle of the pack (9th out of 16). Former Buff Vonleh, now at Baylor, is named a pre-season co-new comer of the year and to the pre-season

Must say if I was a betting man I'd definitely pick them to finish better than 9th, with the recovery of some of their returning players (especially Kennedy Sanders) and some of their incoming transfers key to how high the team might finish.

I think Frida got slighted in those awards.

Knowing how JR coaches and recruits, barring major injuries, I would not be surprised if the Buffs finish higher than predicted.

At least we were not picked for the bottom like we were at times in the Pac

It doesn't appear the Wyoming game is being streamed. Hopefully Cory and Carol are going up to broadcast on the radio.

Hopefully she's the winner of the POST-season honor!

Garzon Lands on Miller Preseason Watch List

The Oklahoma State transfer is one of 20 players on the preseason watch list

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. —
Colorado forward Lior Garzon was among 20 players selected as members of the Cheryl Miller Small Forward of the Year Preseason watchlist, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced on Wednesday.

The Cheryl Miller Award, in its eighth year, honors the top small forwards in women's Division I women's college basketball. It is named after the three-time Naismith Player of the Year and Class of 1995 Hall of Famer.

"We are unbelievably excited for Lior to be on the preseason watch list for the Cheryl Miller award," head coach JR Payne stated. "Lior has had a great career, and I expect this will be her best year yet."

Garzon, a graduate transfer from Oklahoma State, started 30 of 33 games last year in Stillwater. She shot—30.8% from 3-point range, totaling 60 triples on the season. Garzon left Oklahoma State ranked fifth in program history with 140 3's in her two seasons. She set the school record with 80 3-pointers as a junior in 2022-23. Before attending Oklahoma State, Garzon spent two seasons at Villanova, where she was named the Big East Co-Most Improved Player in 2021-22 and was the Second Team All-Conference.

The 6-1 forward has totaled 1,257 career points in 119 career games. She has averaged 10.6 points per game across her two previous stops. Garzon enters 2024-25 with 245 career made 3-pointers and a 34.1% from beyond the arc. She has snagged 435 career rebounds, pulling down 3.7 boards per game.

Garzon was one of four Big 12 players on the list, joining Darianna Littlepage-Buggs (Baylor), Gianna Kneepkens (Utah) and Terima Poindexter (Kansas State).

Fan voting for the award opens on Nov. 1. The list will be narrowed down to 10 in late January, with plans to announce the Final 5 in late March. The list remains fluid, and players can play themselves on or off until the five finalists are selected.

The Selection Committee for the Cheryl Miller Award is composed of top women's college basketball personnel, including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers.

Colorado opens the 2024-25 season at Wyoming on Nov. 4. The Buffaloes' home opener is scheduled for Nov. 7 against Northern Colorado.
