#9 CU vs #22 Utah - 11/26 @ 5:30 PM on FOX - Pregame thread

The kid fumbled multiple times, against BYU I think, and was benched for the third string RB. The next Monday he announced he was quitting, not retiring. When the Utah RB's all went down, Whitt called him and he responded favorably. Whitt called it coming back from retirement. Nothing noble in this story: sulks away after he is benched, comes back only when he will start.

That was my understanding, too.

I guess him calling quitting "retirement" fooled the media tools. Smart PR move, I guess.

Thought I'd pose this here. Raise your hand if you were pissed that Mac gave his kid a scholarship.

Can we assume from the tone of your question that you have a problem with it? If so ... not sure why. You do realize that being a scholly player versus being a walk-on involves a lot more than the bucks for tuition, books, etc., right? There's the right to eat at the training table for instance, which you might recall we got into trouble with NCAA a few years ago for allowing some non-scholly players to eat with the scholly players.

I think J-Mac has earned a scholly ... and from what I've seen, has apparently earned the respect of his teammates. If I've misinterpreted the tone of your query, I apologize.

Not buying the "demoralized Utes done for the season" ****. They can get a 10 win season (with a bowl win) and a win gets them a solid bowl game. They're not packing up for the season by any means. We'd better realize we haven't earned **** in terms of our goals yet. Utah is coming to play spoiler and get themselves a top 20 ranking and an Alamo or Holiday Bowl. I expect top form Utes.

He's making fun of those that did have a problem with it. As you know, DBT is awkward in social situations.

Utes will not be a pushover. Hell they even have a path to the Rose Bowl in the unlikely scenario that they come in here and dominate the Buffs. If that were to happen, and Notre Dame crushes USC, and UW crushes WSU, then USC backs into the championship game against UW. Then say UW crushes USC and the Huskies become a lock for the playoff. The Rose Bowl would then choose from USC, CU, and Utah and at that point (after USC loses big twice and Utah beats CU), then the Utes could conceivably make the Rose Bowl if they vault over CU and USC in the rankings. They will come to play.

No

Utah struggled with Oregon State/UCLA and lost to Cal on the road plus they were only up 2 going into the 4th against ASU, and now they've lost to Oregon at home, I don't know how anyone can think they're respectable. Punch them in the mouth and don't let them get up.

I enjoyed watching The Rise Episode #1 again. I know every fall camp has optimism, but it's fun to watch this and know that The Rise was seen by some before it happened. I've heard Mac say that when they had 15+ great practices during fall camp, without a single bad one, he knew the team was capable of something big and he started pushing the goal of being Pac12 Champions.

What Spiff said. But some people still think Mac should've saved a scholly and paid his tuition. But my post was more meant as a complement to JMac and what a good player he's become.

The biggest thing I am watching for is the line play. We tend to struggle quite a bit on offense when we don't have control of the LOS and Utah has a solid DLine.

On a day when I'm one of about 10 people in my office with really nothing to do, I think I'll spend company time watching The Rise from the beginning. Thanks.

I think we will be ok on offense. We moved the ball on Stanford alright and they might have the best lineman in the country. Not another 600 yard night, but 400-500 sounds right. Let's hope the red zone execution isn't a repeat of stanford though.

I was patiently waiting for you to finish to bring up that last salient point - but you nailed it.

I'm not all that worried about it for a couple reasons, but it is an issue. Reasons:
  • Stanford DBs (when healthy) >>>> Utah DBs
  • Utah LBs are slow sideline to sideline --> we can work them horizontally, which is vital in the RZ when you lose the vertical
  • We are home and our kicking situation, while bad, isn't as bad as it was at Stanford
  • Sefo is healthier.

No idea what to expect from the Utes. Buy we are 10-1 against the spread and favored by double digits. Hope this game is over start of the 4th qtr.

We're also undefeated at home (actually in all games played within Colorado) while Utah has been very shaky in road games. Throw in that it's Senior Day for a very special group of CU players and I have trouble imagining that they would play poorly.

I don't think we will see a demoralized Utes team, but it is pretty clear that we have a LOT more to play for, at home no less.

My biggest concern is that they might press, be tight, and make mistakes. If that doesn't happen, I see the Buffs rolling in this one.

My worry is that the WSU makes a hangover. Lots of emotion went into that game, and the team needs to replicate it this week.

Also, Utah dline taking over and causing turnovers.

I don't really believe in "hangovers" from a win a week prior. To me, that would mean the players don't play as hard or the coaches don't prep as well, and there's no evidence that's an issue with this team. We saw them take it to Oregon State after an emotional win at Oregon. We saw them go into Stanford and win after a huge win against ASU the week prior and then again, at home, the next week against UCLA. I think "hangover" or "trap game", etc are terms used by media and fans to explain why a game didn't go the way that was expected.
