Alamo Bowl - Colorado vs. BYU—Dec 28— 5:30 PM—ABC

Yeah, I think a couple things got in the way - first of all being the long layoff. I don't think there were any Texas-Texas A&M style hard feelings over CU's departure, the rivalry continued for about 15 years after CU went to the Big 7, but then it just stopped for 50 years. The second big reason is that BYU actually made the Holy War a rivalry. I mentioned during that game that if you take out the Lavell Edwards years, Utah/BYU is more lopsided than CU/CSU, but since Edwards was able to close the gap, BYU became a true rival for Utah.

I thought at the time that CU/Utah had the potential to become a good rivalry, especially because BYU and Utah became estranged and weren't going to play one another, and it started out well, with us winning the first game in the Pac and keeping Utah out of of the CCG, but what kind of rivalry is it when one team beats the **** out of the other every single year.

It sucks because with the Nub rivalry dormant, CSU back to becoming nothing close to a rivalry, and BYU and Utah back together again, I feel like we're cast adrift in rivalry land.
We played them yearly from 1948-1958 after leaving to the Big 7. We skipped 2 seasons, but scheduled a home and home starting in 1961 where they beat us in an otherwise undefeated regular season. We played them in the 2nd half of the home and home in 1962 and then took a 50 year hiatus until we both joined the Pac-12 where they mostly kicked our ass for a decade plus.

The only real scenario I can see the rivalry staying is if they'd joined the Big 7/8 alongside us.

That's probably true, and at that point, we probably took the only real steady competition away from them until they formed the WAC with UA and ASU in the 60s.

But not counting Boulder, the closest Big 7 team at that point would have been Manhattan, which is like 900 miles away from SLC, I think.

Yeah, I don't think that would've been realistic. Just a little wishcasting because I miss having a conference rivalry.

I'm one of the few people it seems that is excited for this game. I'm annoyed that the Big 12 didn't put together a schedule that could have the 4 corners schools playing each other every year, instead we're stuck playing 1 AZ school and 1 UT school a year while we play KU, KSU, and OSU almost every year.

I feel like there could be some fun rivalries out of the 5 schools, whereas there will never be a rivalry between us and UCF or us and Cincinnati.
I would've preferred another team to play, but nothing can take away my excitement.

Lavell, who was also an assistant at BYU for 10 years (1962-71) quipped that everybody wanted to schedule BYU as the homecoming opponent. That's how bad the school was until he turned it completely around and kept it there during his 29 years at the helm. To put it another way, in the 50 years between starting football in 1922 and hiring Lavell, BYU only had 14 winning seasons.

I view the Alamo Bowl with mixed feelings, happy to play Colorado for only the third time since World War II (1981, Boulder; 1988, Freedom Bowl), but disappointed that I can't cheer for every Big-12 school in post-season play. Win or lose, I have tons of respect for Coach Prime and appreciate his reciprocity toward Kalani Sitake and BYU.
I wouldn’t say I’m thrilled we are playing BYU because I’d like to see how we match up against the SEC or ACC. But I’m definitely going to SOAK in the moment of the first true bowl since 2016. And since we aren’t going to have any opt outs we won’t be ROCKING THE BOAT going into next year.

We should have hated USC more. F*** those motherf****ing f***ers!

There's a cute mom at my kid's school that is a big CU fan. I asked her if she was going to the bowl game and she said that it was too expensive but that her husband might go with some buddies of his.

Imma check at the end of next week if she needs a watch buddy for the game. :ROFLMAO:

now that I think about it, maybe this husband or buddies are on Allbuffs. Especially if they are fans going bowling.

I was going to do PSA at all my fellow Allbuffers saying if you have plans to leave your cute wife and travel with buddies to the Alamo Bowl, you should transfer your ticket and travel arrangements to me, or risk your kids calling me 'Dad' by next Christmas, but let's be honest - I don't want to raise your kids.

Got the email this evening that my tickets were secured. Gives you the option to decline tickets (for me by Thursday at 4 PM) otherwise the card on file is charged.
(y)

I got the email last night too. I have some friends with about a million Priority Points, and was hoping to sit with/near them in the 200 level. Didn't get those, but should still be good in the 300s.

Posting here and in the ticket forum. I have three tickets extra available for the Alamo Bowl. Will sell them at cost ($205)

When does the team begin Alamo bowl practices in earnest (or have they already)? And when are they heading to San Antonio?
