Tyson Summers:

DC UCF 2014: 19.2 pts/game (9th), 298.5 yards/game, 4.5 yards/att, 2.2 turnovers/game, 2.7 sacks/game
UCF 2015 (for reference): 37.7 pts/game (118th), 464.1 yards/game, 6.5 yards/att, 1.1 turnovers/game, 1.4 sacks/game

DC CSU 2015: 27.2 pts/game (64th), 390.5 yards/game, 5.8 yards/att, 1.2 turnovers/game, 1.8 sacks/game
CSU 2016 (for reference): 30.4 pts/game (81st), 419.7 yards/game, 6.1 yards/att, 1.1 turnovers/game, 2.1 sacks/game

Only way I see this make any sense is if Summers will handle the play calling duties, but HCMT will be heavily involved in the game prep and scheme design of the defense.

Do not like this hire.

Do you know if runs a 3-4 or a 4-3 base? I'm pretty sure Tucker is sticking with our same base alignment (3-4 with either a nickel or Buff for that 2nd OLB spot depending on matchups).

His one year at CSU, he switched them to 4-3.

I can't figure out what he did at UCF, but he took whatever Jim Fleming built and ran with it. He spent the last season at UGA as the defensive analyst for Tucker, so I am guessing he is very comfortable with the 3-4.

This hire doesn't bother me. DC experience and time at Georgia. Maybe not flashy hire, but someone that I am sure knows what Tucker wants his D to look like. They will already be on the same page! I like both hires from Georgia!

I feel like every Jets fan that's ever attended the NFL Draft.

I guess part of it for me is I don't know what to make of these analyst guys. Are they straight game prep guys? Glorified graduate assistants? Good enough to have around, but not great recruiters so they don't do that?

That said, he has gotten good results as a DC, so that's a definite plus. Upgrade over Eliot who got fired from ****ing Kentucky after having playcalling duty stripped mid season. But he's a total unknown on the recruiting front. Zero ties to the area save 1 year at CSU and who knows how much actual recruiting he did there as the DC under an offensive minded HC.

Gotta trust MT on this one and hope he's serious when he says it's all about recruiting.

In the SEC they are more than glorified Graduate Assistants. I mean Butch Jones and Steve Sarkisian were analysts for Bama. In the SEC it seems they use that spot to rehab head coaches who fell flat on their face and need a year to get back in the swing of things from a coordinator perspective.

Yeah, color me wildly unimpressed by both coordinator hires to date. This guy who's been coaching in CFB and NFL for two decades can't do better than 2 Analysts from UGA? Looks really short sighted. Tucker's not going to have the leash Mac did when it comes to immediate results. He will be firmly in the Hot Seat if CU has a bad season in 2019. Don't want to be presumptuous, but at first glance, Tucker isn't getting off to a great start so far. Recruits are bailing faster than I was expecting, and then two Good Old Boy hires as coordinators is pretty suspect. If he doesn't close with a bang in recruiting and/or land some home run assistants with his remaining hires, natives will be restless. Or at least one native with two thumbs will be.

He will not be on the hot seat in year 1. Not with the money we will be paying him and MacIntyre. Year 3 will be things get interesting. He will have two years to prove he can do this at a high level.

Summers’ tenure as DC using S&P+
UCF:
‘12: 46th
‘13: 51st
‘14: 27th
CSU:
‘15: 90th (Uhhm)

Would really love to know the S&P+ for CU's defenses during the same time period. It would be easier to judge whether Summers is a good hire or not.

Well you guys talked me into tucker but you won't be talking me into this DC hire. What is MT doing?

All his connections, especially in sec country and this is who he picks. Underwhelming OC and DC.

Recruiters? Names recruits might have at least heard of?

Csewe retread hilarious.

I'm not seeing the reason for freakout. His resume, other than it's location, is exactly the type of resume you'd think we'd want at DC. IF anything, maybe more experienced. Certainly reason for caution on the recruiting front.

So you are telling me that you do not like the hires from a school that might have been the second best team in the country behind Alabama? Perhaps Tucker liked the information that Summers got him over the course of the season especially with a strong defense like UGA.

And wouldn't analysts also be more heavily involved in recruiting as that was the #1 thing that RG was looking for? Especially since both coordinators have had experience with their respective positions in the past and was able to see behind the scenes for Georgia?

Seems like a lot of knee jerk reactions in this thread...I hope some of you didn't sprain your knees.

EDIT:

Apparently Johnson & Summers will know what is best for both sides of the ball and work together. I don't know how Chev's up tempo offense and MacIntyre's defense could have worked well together.

I think what a lot of folks on this board don't realize, is that CU is still not a destination coaching job right now. It could be if success comes in spades but currently it is not. Both Summers and Johnson are DEFINITE upgrades over what CU had for the last 10 years +. Did people on this board expect top 10 coordinators to be applying left and right? Realistically, CU is not in the position (financially or Football-success wise) to be poaching top tier assistants. Both of these guys are solid hires that are certainly better than the previous coordinators. They have experience as coordinators which proved difficult to lure here in past years.

Eh, I’m just okay with this hire, getting another back office coach isn’t very inspiring though. He will know MT’s system, so that was a plus I’m sure. Just thought I’d see a bit more reach/pull out his coaching tree by this point. I want to see a real poach out of his next hires though, right now he’s just gotten guys who although they have experience, they needed the lifeline in their careers. There’s gotta be somebody he can pull who’s career is on the rise and isn’t just in coaching rehab.

I think this is fair.

you guys are all a bunch of old wash women....let the recruiting play out for gods sake and next season then we can reacess

I think people are overreacting here.

if they are, which is entirely possible, I assume it isn't solely because of Summers, but because of Summers coupled with retaining 4 coaches and the alleged OC hire. I think it's very fair to wonder and/or be concerned about the budget, CU's perception in coaching circles, Tucker's pull and their recruiting ability and footprint at this point, with money probably being the biggest factor.
