I’m not opposed to the outcome, but the optics aren’t the best (especially, when combined with some of our recent de-commitments). Momentum can often (and unfairly) be based on optics - we need some positive news to get this train back on track.

I’m not sure if I’m really excited or really disappointed that KU just poached a coach from us. Does K-state need a rb coach?

Is this confirmed or rumor?
co OC/WR coach- Chev
co OC/QB coach- Jay Johnson
RB coach- Darian Hagan
DC/linebacker coach- Tyson Summers

I wouldn't say KU poached a coach from us. I'm sure Drake would still be DL coach at CU if MT wanted to keep him here.
This goes too far. Drake was kept, one of only 4 coaches out of 9 to be kept, so we wanted him here. Obviously, we didn't want him as much as KU. Factors that probably went into it:
  1. Drake only had one year left on his deal with us, and it's doubtful Tucker was ready to commit to an extension prior to working with Drake;
  2. Drake was making near the minimum for a P5 position coach, and had an argument for a raise, which Tucker was probably not wanting to give (see reasoning in #1);
  3. Drake worked well with Kansas' shiny new DC and didn't know Tucker from Adam;
  4. Maybe Drake really wasn't that into recruiting or didn't mesh well with Tucker for some other reason;

But I'm sure it's almost entirely #1 and #2. I don't blame Drake in the least, nor do I blame Tucker for refusing to give Drake a bump and another year. I just hope we have the money to make that big hire at DL.

The sunshine take is that we kept Drake then heard from a guy Tucker really wanted to be DL, so told Drake to move on if he could.

I can agree with that; I just don't think it's a situation where CU tried so hard and really wanted to keep him, but just couldn't compete with K****ingU to do so.

Unless he has ties to the west coast or can open up a Polynesian pipeline, I don't want him at DL.
It's not like coaches are born with these traits....hire him, get him prospecting, and he will build those connections. . . but the dude can recruit and coach.

He is not coming here, but no, you do not hire a coach with no connections and then just assume you can build them later.

How many times do some of you have to watch the same mistakes?

Quick question regarding footprints. Wouldn’t a good recruiter automatically have connections in CA and TX just because they are extremely good recruiting grounds and lots of players to get?

That’s a good argument.

If you are talking elite (like top five in the country at a particular position), then yes, maybe a guy can just go anywhere and be good. Even then, it is tough.

But the vast majority of coaches take years to build up relationships in particular areas. Why? Because there are a ****load of schools in CA and TX. Everyone recruits those states. Just walking in and setting up shop rarely works.

Nick Saban can basically recruit anywhere he wants. Guess where he sends his ace, Tosh Lupoi? He sends him to California and elsewhere in the West because that is where Lupoi has connections. Where did he send Mike Locksley (another star recruiter)? To Maryland and other mid-Atlantic states because that is where his connections were.
