It seems to me Rick probably gave HCMT a decent budget pool for his staff. HCMT decided against spending most of the budget on a few big names, but instead building a larger staff of specialists (if I am following correctly, we have already announced new positions for a defensive analyst and S&T assistant). If it is the case, I like this decision as results will be less dependent on the individual coaches, but instead on a system. Let’s hope HCMT can get the pieces to work well with each other.
Did MT negotiate a staff salary pool as part of his contract?

With Chev on staff we have a lot of options for the last AC spot. If he has CA connections great move Chev to TX and we are good. If he has TX connections move Chev to So Cal and we are good. Looking forward to getting the best potential recruiter available from one of those locations.

Chev is a better fit in So Cal IMO.

Chev should (and will) continue to recruit (by opening the door) both TX and CA. That's his role. It's up to position coaches and MT to close.

Someone needs to author a multi-paragraph post about the relative strengths and weaknesses of Samoa and Tonga as related to football recruiting.
lol. I was working at our Chicago site last year and a (Caucasian, female) manager i often interacted with mentioned that her husband worked at the same site. she went on to tell me where his station was, and mentioned "he's Tongan, but he looks like he's Samoan" (literally, she used the same two you did).

I recall sarcastically thinking "oh, yeah, that helps. physiological differences of Pacific Island genetic groups -- that's my thing"

I agree. But if we can land a much better OLB with ties in SO Cal, we should do that and shift Chevs focus to TX. If the best OLB coach is from TX keep Chev in So Cal. His versatility gives us the opportunity to get the best available OLB coach from either So Cal or TX.

The recruiting coordinator should be able to handle the two biggest hot beds of our talent pool. He needs to crush both so Cal and Texas.

Exactly. There's a reason why he still has that title. His connections in both places are going to be critical for us moving forward. Alfred Pupunu is a really good hire, and we need a solid California recruiter at OLB. This is a good staff for CMT's first year-but I expect if we have any Jim Jeffcoat types here that CMT won't hesitate to replace them.

I'm guessing Safety. MT sees 5-6 DBs of 11. Needs help there I'd guess despite he himself being a DB coach. Same as MM

The Tongans ran the meanest street gang in SLC.

How is that any different than using Summers and Tillman? Summers best work is in the secondary, no idea why you'd use him anywhere else.

Are we sure the last hire is OLB or is a S coach still in the cards?
Yeah. Summers can coach OLB for sure. He played LB in college and coached the position at least at 1 of his stops. I think that might actually be better for a DC in consideration of position coaching responsibilities versus having to handle Safeties & Nickels. Especially with the CB coach being the least experienced coach on the defense and the S coach needing to be the leader of the DB group.

Since I'm still able to dream until the staff is finalized.. how about we make a power move? Throw a big raise at Duane Akina and steal him from the Longhorns. He's making $400k and he'd be worth $500k or more to us. That move wouldn't suck at all.

Nik, Akina has been at Stanford for five years now.:D

#s. 5 or 6 DBs vs 2 OLBs.
Seems like a silly reason to push a guy away from his best coaching position, and a much better reason to hire a great recruiter who can have less positional responsibilities. 5 or 6 DBs for Tillman and Summers plus help from Tucker seems more than fine. We need a recruiter at OLB coach, front 7 desperately needs recruiting help and Summers ain't it.

Either way Summers has long been listed as the Safeties coach so I presume that's always been the plan.

I heard HCMT say we liked the DC to coach from the back as the safeties coach, so I think that is the first option. Summers does provide flexibility at coaching either safeties or linebackers in case there is a great DB coach to bring on board.

I believe that Tucker's quote was along the lines of Summers being penciled in as our Safeties coach but that he can coach anywhere on the defense.

Your safety coach can also be a recruiter.

See Niks argument above. Basically it's either/or. More about who you can pull.

Sounded like he was just praising his coaching ability/versatility rather than suggesting anything, to me, anyways.
