Basketball Game Thread #7 Oklahoma St @ #20 Colorado (Live From the MGM Grand)

Ok man, whatever you say. Do you ever think the refs are in favor of us, or just always against us?

Refs certainly didn't do us any favors in this one, but it was the bad shooting/finishing more than anything. Even Hubie Brown was complaining that Dinwiddie should've been shooting those FTs late instead of Scott. Though, Scott is a strong FT shooter anyhow so again it was more team failure than refs. Our guys created a lot of shooting fouls that weren't called. It was a factor just not as much as bad shooting. The thing is, and I think Tad talked about this is our team is strong at getting to the line but some ref crews are going to call it loose, so what then? If we're not getting to the charity stripe regularly then guys have to step up and finish. Adjust to the flow of the game. Hopefully, some lessons in that regard were learned. Even if the Buffs picked up a few more shooting fouls and came up w/ a win, we'd be talking about how they stole that one away from OK st

They are always against us. We just overcome bad officiating in victory. :D
Believe me during Chen-gate I was livid, but I don't like how some will always take "the refs hate us" stand. If anyone watched that game through a neutral prism (and I'll admit I'm not 100% objective, as much as I try), they'd see this wasn't a game that the refs decided, we lost legitimately.

You mean Fraschilla right?

I complained a lot about the refs early in the game, and there were some terrible calls that certainly hurt CU. But that's not the main reason why they lost the game. Buffs defense is why it was a loss.

It's natural to complain about the refs especially when you are losing. Plenty of OSU fans were complaining on the ESPN page about the calls as well. I know they don't completely even out, but I think they do somewhat.

Actually my buddy who is a wisco fan texted me and thought the refs were bending us over. I agree with him that the refs didn't call it both ways (especially in the first half) but it is absolutely not the reason we lost. OSU was a better team who dictated the style of play. They made the big shots and played better defense. I am actually surprised we had a chance to steal it at the end.

I was only following CU fans on social media so I take it with a grain of salt. If your friend who has no ties to CU is saying, it has more value. Whenever I evaluate ref calls, I look at the neutral parties first and then the opposition after that my team.

Yeah he might have been rooting for CU to win and maybe that swayed him. Who knows, it is just one guy and it doesn't matter anymore. We lost because OSU was better than us. We don't give up that many layups and win.

I save my ref frustration for when we actually lose because of them. When you complain about it all the time like I know some do, it doesn't carry much weight to me.

I think there were enough things that the team did wrong, that it's hard for me to say that it is on the refs. I definitely think there were some calls on Spencer that put him and the Buffs in a bad situation early though.

I mean that's what it comes down to me, perfect officiating they still don't win this game.

Please, we could go through this every game, all season long including times where they benefit.

Also, if Ok St isn't better than us that day they win.
I didnt say the buffs would win... what I am saying is the refs made a significant impact on that game, especially in the first half

It was kind of implied. The refs make a "significant impact" every game. CU was clearly the worst team on Saturday, I have no problem saying that, they got outplayed. This wasn't one of their better games.

Wouldn't say that CU would win for sure, just that it would have been a different kind of game if Spencer wasn't in foul trouble throughout the game. The foul calls on him early, were a detriment for the rest of the game. Sure, OSU had some calls too that evened it out, but I'd argue they didn't hurt OSU to the same extent. Course, I'm biased--there is no such thing as a perfect reffed game. There's going to always be a couple calls that stand out as ones that cost the game, especially when the score was as close as it was.

Personally, I think it was a mistake to put Spencer on Smart as he is very good at getting fouls (It's certainly a mistake for Tad to announce his intention before the game) but that's a different argument altogether.

Quote from my wife before the game "THAT guy is the ref?!?!? ugh, here comes a bunch of ****ty fouls against CU".

I was also at the game, and the thing I liked was they had ESPN2 playing on the big screen, so you could see the replays. The interesting part was Tad was just going nuts at the game about some of the calls, and a lot of the calls they didnt call. I think the thing he was most frustrated with was the forearm call that got called against us a couple times, but they were doing it constantly.

Would we have won with different refs? Probably not, but my reasoning is that Marcus Smart was pretty impressive at times, and I think if the game was closer he would have taken over.

I think the score was closer than the game actually was. I didn't feel too good about our chances.

The thing I hate about the "if" game, is you always put your team at an advantage. If we only did this... or the other team didn't do that... "we win" arguments. Last year during a cbb game, they were playing the "if game" at halftime on CBS, and Greg Anthony just broke out and said "there's no ifs in sports." Only time it really applies to me is at the end of the game like Chen-gate, because than you can legitimately say "they should've won," any objective person can tell you that. But besides that you can play this game all day and to no avail, one of those they are what they are.

I noticed how irate Boyle was early in the game with the refs.....that is a sign that he wasn't overly happy with how the game was being called.

It was a game that CU probably shouldn't have been as close late considering the FG% difference. Rebounding really seemed to keep the Buffs in it. I do concede that OSU fans could easily point to a few plays that could have broke the game open.

Personally, I had less of an issue with the refs in the Arizona loss then I did in the OSU game. Overall, it's hard to get that mad about it, because it's a non-conference loss, Buffs still in great shape, and will probably play with a chip on their shoulder the rest of the way. Would much rather take an OOC loss to a team like OSU then a loss early in conference play

I totally disagree, there we actually should've won considering it would've been game winning. Yeah I'm sure UofA could find things from earlier in the game, but for them to miss that call was completely unacceptable. I have a hard time thinking we would've won this game (OSU) period.

Considering CU blew a double digit lead late, really didn't think that way. To me, came down to lack of a killer instinct more then one bad call.

Far as the OSU game, Spencer Dinwiddie's comments about the game take it to another level. Pretty clear he felt Smart got calls that he wasn't getting.
