Bowl Games (other than ours) and associated silliness 2024 Plus the Playoffs

TV ratings were down

I barely watched any of the playoffs. I stumbled upon the championship game while making dinner having totally forgotten it was on.

The college football world is epically stupid to not play more of these games over the Christmas New Years holiday break. I suspect Their rating would be a lot better if the bracket started earlier. Use the holiday to build interest momentum. Play the eight team bracket the weekend before NYD, the quarter final is played on New Years Day and the CFP Championship a week later.

There about 14 Saturdays if started in mid August and ended in November. J/20 is way too late. The CCGs are useless and should be dropped.
Once you move into NFL playoff time you become an afterthought for a lot of fans. The league just sucks the air out of the room in terms of media attention.

Yep. And the NFL is not going to step aside to let CFB have Saturdays or something - just like CFB isn't stepping aside to reserve "Friday Night Lights" for HS football. I'm not sure that CFB has a better option if playoffs overlap than to keep playing on Thursday, Friday and Monday for its playoff.

They could eliminate the conference championship games, which granted is a tough ask given how much they make for the conferences, but they are becoming less and less meaningful. BUT, if the the CCG's went away they could play the first round on the first Saturday in Dec, the quarters on the 2nd Saturday, the semi's on the 3rd Saturday, with maybe a game on Friday night and one on Saturday since the NFL can play on the 3rd Saturday of Dec, and then have the title game on NYD and always at the Rose Bowl. The title game would draw great ratings in this timeslot.

Another good option would be to have the first round on the first or second Saturday of Dec, the quarters on the 2nd/3rd Saturday, the semi's on NYD and then the title game a week later but play it on a Saturday. Try to work with the NFL to swap timeslots for either the late afternoon or evening NFL playoff game and the NFL could play one of their games at 12:30 or 1 EST. If the NFL doesn't want to work with CFB then play the title game in the early timeslot on Saturday. Or even Friday night. The Monday after a weekend of NFL playoff games is sucked up by everyone talking about the NFL games, whereas Friday night or Saturday early it would be a lead-in to the NFL playoffs leading to more attention on the title game.

Their rating were down too.
I think TV sports including football are reaching a saturation point. No reason to go out of your way to see a game when is seems like there is always one on.

That said the NFL may drop off but people will still put more effort into seeing the NFL than a college game, even an important one.

As younger people move away from traditional TV including sports broadcast and seemingly looking to things other than sports to pass their time it will be interesting to see what happens to rights fees in future contracts.

Major college football conferences are building budgets and expectations based on an assumption that future media contracts will be at least the same if not larger than current ones.

We have already seen significant costs cutting in ESPN and other sports broadcast organizations. Part of the demise of the PAC12 was the reality that broadcasters were not going to pay what the conference expected.

One year doesn't make a trend but the people counting on media money in college sports should be concerned.

Everyday a few more boomers day.

Everyday the current generations still dont watch live sports.

Part of why the math is going the wrong way.

No reason for a near month break between conference titles and playoff.

Pros don't even take a week off before playoffs....college doesn't need to either.

Rebecca: So...are you going to Bronwyn's flag football game tonight?

Hank's head: F*ck!

Hank: I don't know. There's a really big football game tonight. And I didn't get to watch the end of the game last night because of robotics...

Rebecca: It's unbelievable how selfish you are. The only reason these girls play flag football is for their dads.

Just got kicked out of Bronwyn’s flag football game. Final drive. They are up by one and on defense. The ref loses count of the downs and awards an extra down. Ref is not receptive to our arguments. I ask the opposing coach to do the right thing and acknowledge the game is over. He gives me a “f*ck you” look.

I yell, “So we’re just gonna let Colorado-Missouri happen all over again!” That got me tossed. Maybe the ref is a CU fan. Who can’t count.

Yelling at him over a kids flag football game was definitely the right move. Society, as we know it, depends on the just outcome of a youth flag football game. We will certainly devolve into complete chaos once these things are allowed to go unchecked.

Well you know that professional referees never make a mistake, should we accept anything less from the 16yo kid making $20 for calling a youth flag football game? Whaterver happened to our standards.

More like a 35-year-old incel.

I think he remembered me from a few weeks ago. Our girls were playing the Lions (an all-boys team). We were getting killed. The Lions were catching everything. Meanwhile, our girls can't catch anything. The ball is bouncing off of their hands the entire game. In the fourth quarter, we discover that the Lions were playing offense all game with a half-deflated ball. I made some jokes, and the ref totally freaked out. Almost kicked me out of that game. I yelled, "Chill out, dude. I'm joking...Kind of."

The game resumes, and I say to the line judge (who is a normal college-aged kid), "I guess that guy can't take a joke." The line judge then said to me, "The Lions absolutely know what they are doing. Every game I have reffed for them, they play with a deflated ball. I brought this up to the head ref a few weeks ago. He said there are no rules in flag football that prevent playing with a deflated ball. Me? I absolutely think they are cheating."
