Bowl Games (other than ours) and associated silliness 2024 Plus the Playoffs

Could this happen? Texas beats Ohio State. Notre Dame wins it all. OSU fires Day and makes Freeman the highest paid coach in CFB.

Also, Drew Allar in five games against ranked opponents this season:

69/126 (54%)
809 yards
6 TDs/4 INTs

I heard that about no receivers having a catch last night and was shocked at that stat. I didn't realize Allar was this mediocre and even that might be giving him too much credit. Even aside from the end of game disastrous pick he didn't have a very good game. 2 picks that were called back and he also missed an open guy down at the goal line on 3rd down which cost them 4 points, not to mention numerous other errant throws especially in the first half.

That wasn't an errant pass. If the ball hits you in the knees you should catch it. It wasn't perfect, but it was a dropped ball.

Amazing to me in a time when multiple QBs are available each year on the portal, when NIL allows big money programs a huge advantage in recruiting both high school and transfers, that a program like Penn State which has so much talent at other positions and clearly does not lack for resources can't find and play a higher level QB than Drew Allar.

I don't blame him, they told him he could be their guy and he took the offer. I blame their staff for not identifying and bringing in a better quality player at the most important position on the field. There are G5 QBs who are significantly more talented than Allar.

On the other side Leonard isn't anything to write home about, he doesn't have the pro scouts drooling but at least he hit some big passes at key times and didn't make a wild throw for an INT at the most critical moment of the game.

I read this three times and have yet to identify your insight.

I probably left out some context. There was a question this week on why, after having won two playoff games, the consensus on the board was that Franklin couldn't win "big games". The post that I replied to, that contained a tweet showing Franklin's record against AP top 5 teams, was a very succinct way of telling everyone why Franklin has that reputation.

Hey, that's James "Big Game" Franklin to you.
I know it counts toward that state, but I don't really put that game in the same category with most others. It's the CFP semis and Penn State played a really good game for the most part. Well coached by Franklin. His mid QB was under pressure and threw a pick (the DB made an incredible diving catch) while they were trying to get in position to win with plenty of time left. Somebody had to lose and I don't really put that loss on Franklin.

Fair, plus he lost a number of those games at home. And totally agree that last night's game easily could've gone either way. The one thing I'd say is that Penn State needed to take a few shots down field with the way the ND defense was blitzing or being so aggressive.

The above is the most succinct way to put the rap on Franklin. Today's kinda not fair, he had a really good game plan and it worked for the most part, then his QB throws a terrible pick and they lose at the very end, but it is what it is. You can argue that playoff games are big no matter who you play, and that's fair, but when it comes to James Franklin's teams playing the very best, they lose.
The lack of playmakers at WR for PSU was telling. They couldn't get open against ND's pretty great secondary. Almost all their passing yards were to TEs and the rest might have been to RBs.

The Broncos must get Warren because he is as good of a TE as I have seen in a long long time. All I could see on the field was a Kelse or Bowers out there as the only reliable weapon. Allar has been mid his whole career, and no way is he remotely NFL ready, he should play every possible year of CFB and cash NIL checks

Looked at as an individual game you can say don't put the loss on Franklin and it could have gone either way.

The problem is that at some point getting the same results in big games becomes more than just a coincidence.

That game could have gone either way, or Franklin's team could have taken opportunities they had and made it so that they couldn't lose on one great play by an opponent.

There were opportunities earlier in the game to change things in their favor and didn't take them.

Ultimately yes it was a great play by the DB but over and over again it's this reason or that reason. At some point his team has to win some of these games

I actually thought at one point last night that he was going to shed that label. He coached a good game and you're absolutely right that the loss was more on Allar than anyone else.

Still, he's the coach and basically the CEO of Penn State football. If he has a mid QB and mid WRs, that's on him. Apparently there are rumors (or at least were rumors) that PSU was going to offer him $10 million to come back for his senior year instead of declaring for the draft. That's insane.

I never knew that a nittany Lion was just a mountain lion until I just googled it. Do they have mountain lions in Pennsylvania?

The word "Nittany" is derived from the Algonquianword Nit-A-Nee meaning "single mountain".[citation needed] According to Penn State folklore, Nit-A-Nee is also the name of a Native American maiden whose actions caused Mount Nittany to be formed.[citation needed] The original inhabitants of the area used Nit-A-Nee to describe the mountain,[citation needed] and it likely became commonly known as "Nittany" by the first Europeans to settle the area in the 18th century. The word "Nittany" was already in use by the time Pennsylvania State University was founded. Some sources cite the word Nit-A-Nee as meaning "barrier against the wind"

Fify on that last part

We’re Orange AND Sugar Bowl champions in the same year! This is exactly what the sports needs! Hooray!

ND is never going to join a conference at this rate. They got to host a playoff game, which means they get to pocket all the excess cash hosting a football game brings in, they get the cash from winning two bowl games, and they're going to get whatever cash a team gets from advancing to the CFP championship - and they don't have to share it with anybody.

Texas has to split their winnings 16 ways. Ohio State 18 ways. Why would ND ever want to join those conferences?

😕. I was merely implying that whatever teams make it to the championship will have won 2 NY6 bowls in the same year. We’re already losing some of what makes college football great, and now this.

Even if the Big and the sec start refusing to schedule them they will be fine

The B1G and SEC will do exactly what the Networks, who are making them loads of money, tell them to do. Notre Dame is one of those schools that means big TV ratings and money for the networks. No way the networks go for not scheduling them.

I get you. I was merely riffing on it because it got me thinking about how much ND is profiting off of this new model and how that affects the notion that people like to throw around that ND has to join a conference. This system might actually have created a reality where ND can dominate college football for years to come. All that cash going straight into NIL? Yikes.

Plus they don't have to deal with those embarrassing "S.E.C." chants!

Teams seeded 5, 6, 7 and 8 seem to have a great advantage, financially and competitively. In the case of ND the extra money from the home game would not have escaped the notice of the business office at the beginning of the season. From a financial planning perspective the loss to NIU was perfect. By not being in a conference it would be more likely for ND to get one of the coveted seeds. Bottom line, the bye in this format needs to go.

i think your take is really good on this one.

if i were a spokesperson for ND in any capacity (spit, take a shower....but I did like Mcdonough's comment).....

I would say to all the assembled media: "Ok, fellas and Joy Taylor, YOU tell me what 'joining a conference means....right now, today? UCLA and USC are in the Big 10....wooo that Rose Bowl traddy.....Oklahoma and Texas are in the SEC.....CSU is in the Pac".

looks like we doing all right
