BYU Game thread. Official.

1. No he isn’t. You can’t say someone is talented and then list all the things that makes him less talented . Maybe the word you’re looking for is “athletic”. His 3/4 or 1/2 throwing motion is so bad. His eyes aren’t looking downfield past his first read. He only looks up when he’s escaped the pocket. He doesn’t read the ends correctly on rpo.
Sure you can. He has the tangibles to be a great college QB; runs well and can rip it. Would be curious to watch some Liberty film and see if the pocket issues were present then, or perhaps this is a case of the yips.

2 takeaways from BYU:

1. Salter is extremely talented and we have seen flashes of what he can do both running and passing which has worked against lesser competition throughout his career, but he does not know how to play QB. His unwillingness to play in the pocket, move the ball vertically, or attack the middle of the field has been debilitating.

2. We got bullied by a true freshman QB while our “5-star” looks nowhere like he’s ready to play. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt having left school early, but just some perspective on Juju and what he is.
JuJu should be in high school. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

'F the Mormons' chant and so forth. Certainly not a good look especially after what happened yesterday in Michigan.
I know there's joking and so forth, some in good fun, but I'm a bit embarrassed by this.
'F BYU' to me is ok but putting Mormons instead is a bit over the top.

You don't want to know how many copies of that book were destroyed in that stadium that night.

CU has an elite pass blocking OL and Salter bails out of clean pockets all the time. He has a high school level understanding and feel for pocket passing and that might be generous. His greatest attribute is his improvisation and running ability. This offense has to continue to migrate toward read option and easy, one read throws with some well timed deep shots mixed in. The biggest frustration was that they didn't even attempt to soften BYU's defense with deep shots to Sincere, Jojo or Omarion.

As for your second statement, comparing the two freshman QBs is not apples to apples. Bachmeir is not a good passer, but he's competent enough and we made him look significantly better, but he is a big, tough runner who can make plays with his legs. That BYU team is probably an 8-4 team this year as most good Big 12 programs are going to contain him fairly well. Juju is a true pocket QB who has elite upside as a passer but underrated athleticism. That skill set takes longer to develop than being a runner who can throw.
Sure - but I wouldn't say he's not a good passer. He's 4-0 as a P5 starting QB.

Not that star ratings are the end-all-be-all by any means, but I think physical maturity should hold a lot of weight in those rankings and our evaluations of HS quarterbacks. I think more than anything, it's purely frustration that we have such a highly touted player sitting on the bench, because he's not physically ready. Again, I get he's young(er) - but when I think of a 5-star, that's someone who's ready to come make an impact tomorrow. Cal has a true freshman tearing it up, Juju has been on campus for nearly a year, maybe another season in HS would've paid him dividends.

We did produce Matt Stone and Trey Parker, I mean…

Briles' "Veer & Shoot" offense is about as QB friendly as it gets.
Completely. And I wondered if it is Shurmur's scheme that is giving him fits. IMO Pat was brought in to help nurture SS2 for the next level - hence we've seen less of the CFB gimmicks in this offense.

As an aside - I enjoyed all the shifts and motions seen in the first drive. I think we should've gone back to the opening script in the 3rd qtr.

Yes, there are some true freshman out there playing and some play well. Those are mostly exceptions, though.

Juju's readiness (or lack thereof) is not physical, it's mental. It's about him understanding coverages, defensive fronts, where pressures are coming from, adjusting the blocking, checking in/out of certain plays and then being able to execute at a high level against the faster game at the P4 level compared to high school.

It's why Julian Sayin sat his freshman year at Alabama and then sat again his RS Fr year at Ohio State last year. It's why Arch sat for two years at Texas. Keelon Russell is sitting at Alabama right now. Longstreet is sitting at USC. DJ Lagway was QB2 for Florida last year until Mertz got hurt and he actually played decently well when he played, only to regress this year.

Everything I've heard is that they believe that Juju is going to be one of the best QBs in the country but they aren't going to rush it. 2026 and 2027 are supposed to be the seasons of national expectations with Juju leading the way.

Thanks Mrs. Salter.

I'm also very disappointed and annoyed with Salter saying that being benched messed with his head and has been difficult for him. Guy came back from the benching and dominated Wyoming, but throws out that excuse when he struggles and loses to BYU. Lack of accountability and leadership is evident with him and it sucks that he is the only option for this team to win some games right now.
He was this way at Liberty. We should have asked any/better questions before jumping on him.

Juju also has the deck stacked against him here. Both his OC and QB Coach are the same ignorant, inept, defective fvcking twat.

On a positive note, I thought the o and d lines played very well, especially the o line. BYU is very stout on both lines.

If we can get that going forward and hopefully stick with a game plan on offense, CU still has a chance at bowl eligibility.

Bench him again.

It was all I could do to not lose it being surrounded by chanting BYU fans. When they were chanting, “BYU! BYU! BYU!” I was somewhat audibly responding “is a cult!” After each “BYU!” So shoot me.

Think about it from this perspective. He was benched due to performance. I know the plan was for a rotation versus Delaware, but he was absolutely benched for that Houston game because Staub outplayed him and his late game struggles versus Delaware.

He earns his job back and never really struggles versus Wyoming so no issues that night. Now comes BYU. CU comes out hot and then start to struggle on offense. You have a couple of bad drives in the second quarter, then watch them move 94 yards and it is a 4 point game, with them getting the ball back to start the second half. Your first drive of the third quarter is another 3 and out and you can’t tell me he felt pressure knowing that he could be pulled for the next drive.

He second half was pretty bad. 3 drives without a first down. A great drive for a touchdown, and a game ending interception.

I get it, and I don’t necessarily think he did anything in his two drives against Delaware that warranted being benched, but it was hard to deny Staub a chance. That said, you just can’t deflect and place blame elsewhere for his struggles against BYU. He was under no threat of being pulled and he was mostly awful in the passing game. He’s just not a leader or a very good QB.

I view him as a frontrunner personality. Dynamic and at his best when things are clicking and he's winning. Not the same guy when faced with pressure and adversity.

If that's unfair and he proves me wrong the rest of the season, I will gladly apologize and eat my crow.

Staub said he knew he was going to play in the Delaware game on Friday, so I don't think it is fair to say Salter was benched for Staub that game, especially since he got back in the game.

Post game Staub quotes:

"I was just hoping for an opportunity," Staub said. "To be honest, this whole week I wasn't really expecting to play, kind of with the things and how they went. I wasn't expecting to play. On Friday, I got the call and (thought), 'Okay, I might be playing.' I was just waiting on an opportunity. Didn't know it would be a two-minute drill, and the rest is history."

Sorry, I meant benched for Houston. It was clear to me that Delaware was an open tryout for QB1 going into Houston. Salter lead two scoring drives but Staub had two TD drives on big plays and a few really nice throws, so it was hard for them to deny Staub the starting opportunity.

The difference with those guys you just mentioned, is they are all sitting/sat because there is/was a true #1. Lagway, Russel, and Longstreet would be starting for CU at this point as freshman. Arch was not ready as a frosh.

Sayin I think is a good player comp to Juju. Both a bit undersized, but I do not think Juju has nearly the arm talent that Sayin possesses.

Eh, Lagway sat behind Graham Mertz, who I don't think was any better of a transfer prospect than Salter. Russell and Longstreet I agree.

I disagree about Juju's arm talent. There's a reason he was Lincoln Riley's top QB choice. His arm talent is legit and he has an elite ceiling.
