CU Assistant Coach Hiring Thread

As of yesterday, it does not seem that Mike Zimmer to Dallas is a done deal. USA Today had an interesting take today, to the effect that Zimmer may not be McCarty's guy b/c he would be poised to take over, if the Cowboys HC is on the hot seat. Interesting stuff . . . Sheffter seemed sure but backtracked. I don't think they really know what is happening.

If Zimmer is not hired, I wonder if he does the analyst gig one more year at CU. That could be pie-in-the-sky, but would probably help with the transition. I really like CU's hire of Livingston. He is young, but resume is solid and things are trending to young coaches these days. Does anyone know if Livingston calls the defense from the sideline or the box? If he is sideline, then who will be in the box? Alternatively, if he is in the box, who is on the sideline?

Same with Shurmer, will he be on the sideline or in the box? Maybe Bartalone or Phillips in the box.

Cu made money from Brewster (100k) and Kelly (212k) leaving early. Paying Shurmer 800k, 850k next year.

Livingston 800k this year, but he's gonna make 995 next year. The penalties for leaving within 120 days are interesting. Nice touch RG.

The thing that jumps out is loadholt having a 1 year only contract. 325k

Not liking the Loadholt contract, he seems to be a guy that if the line comes together, that you immediately up him, but Prime has a post 2025 assessment period where he gets to likely name his price.

It’s fine. It allows us to not be tied to someone learning on the job

Agree with you on PL only having a year being weird.....but he felt like a lottery ticket kind of hire.

Sal is still officially listed as DTs coach, but he supposedly has some issues and hasn't been around. Sounds like Sapp is the defacto DT coach in his place. Without any knowledge of Sal's issues, feels like Prime is either doing right by Sal by keeping him on staff and paid and/or he'll at least be back in some capacity to help get Sapp adjusted. Either way, have to think Sapp is the full time DT/DL coach in 2025.

I hope Sal is okay. Can’t help but wonder if this something kept him from leaving to go to the school that was rumored after the end of last season? Maybe Prime is keeping him on to ensure that he has the income and benefits to help out with whatever is keeping him off the sidelines and practices this spring?

It seems that Sapp has stepped in and stepped up to the role of getting these kids ready so far! Can’t wait to see him on a game day setting!

I'm excited for the Sapp experiment, if nothing more than to see if the Dline plays with a "pants on fire" mentality. Outside of the Oline (which was a re-do), I think the Dline is where CU really upgraded their talent--size, strength, speed etc... Definitely expect some growing pains in players, coach and new DC (overall coordination), but presuming Sapp is fired up on the sideline, perhaps the sheer emotion/will may bring them to new heights.

I think that Sapp is the recruiter, motivator and individual technique coach, while Damione Lewis (Defensive Analyst) is kind of the in-game, schematic adjustment guy.

Shurmur has been in the booth I think in most of his coordinator stints.

I would agree with that and the concept that CU really needs to play complementary football in all three phases. IMO, the upstairs box (cerebral) is the place where CU can really improve, make the right adjustments throughout the season, and be very special if it all comes together. IMO, CK was probably plus D-coordinator by CU standards, however yelled the whole game, and I'm not sure that fired up the players on the field at times.

I would say the same thing with the offense. If Loadholt etc... provides the passion/drive, the upstairs box does its job (where-ever Schumer decides to call the plays) combined with the guys on the field with very motivated players then look out. Although the RBs and TEs are sort of to be determined, I do think we have more than enough play-makers to be very dangerous.

My prediction is if the Dline is explosive, then the defense has the talent to be very special and it will be a great season. Winning on the road is always tough, however the Buffs are blessed with 7 games within the State, and with 5-7 wins, we will win a few on the road and it will be a break out season.

Another theory would be that Sal has moved on but they don't want to announce it until it's too late to do a coaching search, and can just hand the job to Sapp.
It seems pretty clear to me that Sal has been out in every way (and likely retired) other than the "official way".

Sapp literally can’t be the DL coach since he isn’t a college grad. And there are rules on who can coach on the field.

Such a weird situation
