CU Buffs hire former Minnesota OC Mike Sanford as their new OC

I think the best this program could do is an OC from a hot G5 offense, or offer a promotion to a position coach at a blue chip program with a great offense like OSU or Bama. Since it's CU...we will probably hire some dud (not dude) from within and continue our now long history of mediocrity.

I personally don’t want a someone that hasn’t called plays successfully for a number of years. No AC promotions without that for me.

Danny Langsdorf…

The Price Is Right GIF

Same. In fact, I’d take their entire staff, lock, stock, and barrel.
I almost liked this, but then thought back to an article I read in the offseason (I think it was fivethirtyeight as there was a decent amount of stats behind it) that G5 head coaches who bring the majority of their staff with them to a P5 gig actually fail pretty consistently (Frosty was one of their "case in point" examples). The ones that do well only bring a couple coaches with them, and hire the majority of their staff (esp the coordinators) from other P5 programs.

I am having trouble finding reasons that an experienced play caller from a successful P5 program would want to come to Colorado.

To me it feels like we are going to have to go with a G5 coordinator or a P5 position coach. I hope I am wrong

Well yeah. Who is talking about the new OC being an experienced play caller from a successful P5 program? Usually, those guys are looking for HC jobs, not lateral moves.

What he can’t be is somebody who will be learning in the job. This absolutely cannot be a first rodeo for the next OC. Gotta be a guy who has had success at the college level coordinating an effective offense. Would be helpful if this person also has some QB coaching experience. Recruiting needs to be emphasized, but not necessarily prioritized. I want the OC to be working with the position coaches to identify and recruit players who will be effective in his system. Extra bonus points for somebody who has shown an ability to adapt his system to utilize the talents of the players at his disposal.

Mostly agree, but I think the hire absolutely needs to be the QB coach as well.

Some earlier poster was saying he wanted an experienced P5 coordinator.
I don’t know if anyone else said P5 coordinator but what I said was play calling experience is what I wanted. P5 or G5 less important to me

I'll take successful over experienced. There are a lot of experienced guys out there, who are sitting on their couch for a reason.
Of course. My point was that the combination of a successful, experienced P5 OC isn’t coming here. They are looking to be Head Coaches, not OC for a ****ty program. A successful G5 OC maybe.

That would require Langsdorf to be fired. I would think that if he wasn’t getting the job, he’d have been let go at the same time as Chev. How many legit candidates will we be able to bring in if we tell them they have to coach WR’s and can’t work with the guys in charge of running their offense? I think Langsdorf not being fired today tells us all we need to know. Hope I’m wrong.
