We can all quibble over how many total schools, how it's broken into divisions, and who are the 48 most valuable to include (brand + market)... but what you laid out illustrates where I was going on how I see the future of major college athletics.I think that's almost certainly the way things are going. I'm not convinced that the 4 regional groupings necessarily have a "Western" region, either. It might look like: Northeast, mid-Atlantic/Midwest, Southeast, Southwest.
If I were making things up, I'd end up pretty close to this:
Midwest Northeast Southeast Southwest Arkansas Penn State Miami A&M OU Maryland FSU UT Oklahoma State Syracuse GT Baylor Wisconsin NC State Clemson Texas Tech Minnesota Pitt Tennessee Arizona State Notre Dame UVA Georgia Colorado Iowa VT Florida Utah Northwestern Duke Alabama UCLA Nebraska UNC Auburn USC Illinois Ohio State LSU Oregon Missouri Michigan South Carolina Washington Kansas Michigan State Ole Miss Arizona
This idea is picking up steam in traditional media circles. From a shock and awe perspective it checks the right boxes.I could see a 'strengthening' of the (don't say) alliance of the new Pac10 and the ACC. Play about three OOC football games against a rival from the other conference and an equivalent amount of OOC in basketball. This TV package would cover a lot of markets.
Feel like this is how it should be right now with this realignment but Oregon is being left out. Could you imagine CU having Oregons success but not being included in the B10? We would legit lose it.We can all quibble over how many total schools, how it's broken into divisions, and who are the 48 most valuable to include (brand + market)... but what you laid out illustrates where I was going on how I see the future of major college athletics.
One good analogy in a new article in The Athletic said to think of every program as a reality show. From that perspective and with how media is going, the question on valuation comes down how many people would pay to stream a season of that show and at what price. I think that nailed it.
Then why does Jeremy Dougherty (head of CU's Flannel Panel) keep retweeting him?I'll say it again: MHver knows nothing and is absolutely full of ****. He reads what other people say, retweets every random thing (especially if it is pro-Big XII/ pro- WVU) and claims sources, then backtracks and cites a fluid situation when his bull**** never comes to fruition. He's been doing this for a decade. His tweets are 100% worthless.
Why would they up the payout?ESPN is actually going to decide the outcome. PAC 12 is in the negotiation window with Fox and ESPN and we are hearing Fox is not interested. ESPN has the contract with the BIG12 starting in 2024. The Big12 is not offering a deal to anyone without talking to (and listening to) ESPN. So the question is what is the best deal for ESPN ?
I am guessing ESPN will keep the PAC 12 intact and take over the network and a payout of about $40 million per year per school.
Money quote: "Realignment exists almost solely so schools have more millions to buy out bad coaches and pay for private planes and renovate already opulent locker rooms."
I like this, but I thought that was the point of the last alliance. Why doesn’t Pac and ACC blackball the Big10 for ruining alliance? This idea is picking up steam in traditional media circles. From a shock and awe perspective it checks the right boxes.
It’s what happens when the distribution of talent is based on persuading kids to come to your school. Recruiting is actually the root of all CFB’s issuesMoney quote: "Realignment exists almost solely so schools have more millions to buy out bad coaches and pay for private planes and renovate already opulent locker rooms."
This is what bugs me about this whole thing--there is no adult in the room to reign in any of this madness. Unrestrained chasing of dollars will always lead to a collapse. Always.
He’s on page 12 now!I just received a like from @Bread on page 8 of this thread. Let us know when you catch up!
I’m all for pettiness at this stage.I like this, but I thought that was the point of the last alliance. Why doesn’t Pac and ACC blackball the Big10 for ruining alliance?
I’ve read the last few MHVer tweets. You can see the panic in them. It’s freaking awesome. They’re scared of being poached by the Pac 12 ACC deal. Then why does Jeremy Dougherty (head of CU's Flannel Panel) keep retweeting him?
If it’s a merger and GoR reopens, SEC wins. Clemson, FSU, Miami bolt without consequences.Only if it's a full fledged conference merger with new, long term GOR, one conference network, etc. None of this "scheduling alliance" bull****.
It's weird to see a non-profit with a mission which doesn't include "to out-compete professional sports leagues for the consumer's sports entertainment dollar" making decisions so driven by greed. The "owners" of these college sports properties don't even make extra money from the deals. It's a weird dynamic.Money quote: "Realignment exists almost solely so schools have more millions to buy out bad coaches and pay for private planes and renovate already opulent locker rooms."

Bread-tracker!He’s on page 12 now!
One of the smartest people I have known used to say about government and politicians, "It's all about the jobs." Same could be true here. It's weird to see a non-profit with a mission which doesn't include "to out-compete professional sports leagues for the consumer's sports entertainment dollar" making decisions so driven by greed. And I'll say this-he's not less credible than Wilner and Canzano (both of whom have a vested interest in seeing the Pac continue to exist as a functioning college conference) are.I'll say it again: MHver knows nothing and is absolutely full of ****. He reads what other people say, retweets every random thing (especially if it is pro-Big XII/ pro- WVU) and claims sources, then backtracks and cites a fluid situation when his bull**** never comes to fruition. **** youhave we joined the SEC yet?
He is just loafing around.Bread-tracker!
And Wazzu. And Oregon State.Cal appears to be completely and absolutely f**ked right now.
Yes he is... a lot less credibleAnd I'll say this-he's not less credible than Wilner and Canzano (both of whom have a vested interest in seeing the Pac continue to exist as a functioning college conference) are.
You're slamming said door in your own face if you stay here. This conference doesn't give a **** and I'd rather not attach myself to anyone. The more I think it over, the more I wonder how a 16-team Big 12 is any better than a PAC 10. Those two feel like basically the same conference, with one having more of a traditional feel to it.
Look, it feels like we mostly all agree that the day of the two super conferences is coming. We also agree that we likely won’t have a seat at that table. So the next best thing is what we have right now - a ten team conference that we can actually compete in.
I had originally stated that I didn’t care what happened, but the more I think it over, I’m coming down on the side of staying right where we are and making the best of it. We aren’t going to the B1G or the SEC, so what difference does it make?
No. Wilner and Canzano are being handed spaghetti by Kliavkoff and the league (neither of whom really matter here) to throw at the wall. A lot of these ideas aren't credible-starting with any sort of alliance with the ACC. They will not do anything that puts their own GoR (which if we're honest is the only thing holding that league together) at risk.Yes he is... a lot less credible
Only if they are not locked into a long GOR term. CU will be in the BIG or SEC soon, as long as they can bolt quickly from wherever they land in summer 2022.It should mean that the 4corner schools should bolt and force the decision for UO and Wash, rather than wait and have the decision made for them.
CU holds more cards joining now than if they come to the Big12 on a life raft.
Honestly. You or anybody else please explain to me how the Big 12 with 16 teams is a better spot for us than a PAC 10. It feels like the money would be about the same, but the hassles and actual enjoyment of the games would be much better in the PAC 10. We aren’t going to the SEC or B1G. Our choices are limited. You're slamming said door in your own face if you stay here. This conference doesn't give a **** and I'd rather not attach myself to anyone.
Easiest way to do this is go to the Big 12, commit to winning, and actually do it.
