CU officially hires Mel Tucker as new Head Football Coach

I don’t understand the whole never coached West of Chicago. You do understand that as HC, he isn’t the one that initiates recruiting? That’s on the recruiting coordinator and assistants.

If he’s a good recruiter then it won’t matter that he’s never coached West of Chicago. Look at Cristobal at Oregon.

Tucker is significantly more experienced than Lake (as a play caller and overall) and will come with much better connections having coached with Saban/Smart, Tressel, Dantonio, Del Rio and Crennel. Lake has mostly coached with Petersen and would be more likely to pull from the Boise pool (Gruden, Marinelli and Raheem Morris connections not doing much for me).

Besides, maybe Lake interviewed poorly? Maybe Tucker’s experience won out? Or maybe it was the fact that Tucker’s coached in 3 national championships and been playcalling for a top defense for 3 years? Maybe it’s his NFL coordinator and interim HC experience?

Who’s knows, but it’s strange to be so outspoken by what looks like an extremely well qualified candidate. Let the assistants fill some gaps in the recruiting footprint and let’s go.
 
In looking at Tucker’s career, I have confidence that he is simply a great closer as a recruiter. His initial career was in the MAC and B1G save for one year at LSU. He kept growing as a coach and he went to the NFL.

With hardly any connections and after TEN years away in the NFL, he went with Saban to Bama and then with Smart to UGA in the SEC. At both spots, he’s been an invaluable recruiter and coach.

It’s not ideal that he hasn’t recruited the west coast. Having existing connections is always nice. It is not a disqualifier IMO because he seems adaptable, competent, and competitive. Unless you have a belief grounded in evidence that he is incapable of leading a staff to recruit predominately in the west and Texas, it feels insulting to presume that he’ll be a failure in directing his staff in recruiting our footprint.

He has been a success at recruiting wherever he has been. Unless schools in the west have a different species of high school players/coaches, I think he and his staff will find a way to build relationships with coaches and players in that part of the country.

We’re we to hire Leavitt, I would have my doubts. What I wouldn’t say is “I don’t want him here.” That’s what pushes your rhetoric from skepticism into some weird area where you believe Tucker will fail. That’s why people are calling you out.

I said it earlier, but so excited about ADRG bringing SEC quality football to the Pac-12. Not that I like that 'culture', but the football and the quantity of players from east of here is above where the Pac-12 is.

Colorado is the furthest east of the Pac-12 schools. So, we're closer to where Tucker has recruited from. Great opportunity to explore and recruit from more and fertile territory, than just Texas, etc. We've gotten great recruits from Florida. Get players that want to come west.
 
I really can’t quite wrap my head around why the argument that someone has never coached in this footprint is even alive to begin with. I think being a professional, any coach could come in, look at tape of conference foes and figure out how they should attempt to conquer it. As for recruiting, moving to a place you’ve never been doesn’t mean you forget how to talk to young football players and give your pitch? He can recruit in one area, he can do it in another. No we won’t get Georgia type recruits, but he will improve recruiting.

Plus, I think it's a very good bet that Chev is retained as WR coach largely because of his recruiting chops and relationships and I would also be pretty shocked if Hagan isn't given an administrative job tied to recruiting. I expect Tucker will fill out the rest of the staff with guys who are upgrades as recruiters in every case and Chev and Hagan will make the introductions to our existing recruits and to the staffs at high schools we've been hitting hard.

I would also like to keep Drake. Like what he did with the DL this year. Think him and Tucker would click.
 
Bring in a guy like UGA coordinator and a janitor can introduce our recruits to him and they are going to be pretty excited, as in they just won the lottery. Re-recruiting our commits will be the easy part I'd think...

I cant see any of our D recruits not liking this hire. I would like to see his ability to do a couple upgrades as well.

It's a very valid consideration when we start talking about the assistants he hires. Tucker should be coming in with a recruiting plan and that plan has to be tied to the footprint. I won't be upset if he chooses to recruit GA & FL with an assistant who has those connects, but the staff needs to be focused on CA and TX with AZ, OK, UT, NV, HI, WA, OR and maybe LA plus a number of coaches also having in-state responsibilities.

I’m sure he understands this. But there are some people here acting like he’s some bumpkin who can only recruit within a 25 mile radius of Athens. A good recruiter can recruit anywhere and Tucker is just that.

Yeah. He coached in the NFL for years, with players from all over the country. I think I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he can speak to a kid's motivations; whether that's in Georgia, Colorado, Texas or California.
