Hagan gets a lot of criticism here - mostly due to his perceived lack of recruiting acumen. I think he might be one of the better assistants on the staff right now. God knows we aren’t hurting at the RB position. We have depth, talent, production, class balance and a pretty solid RB commitment already. I don’t think any of us would be upset if we had that kind of set-up at the other position groups.
Hell, we are even using a fullback sometimes. I about fainted when I saw that.

My only criticism of Hagan is that he has become a RB only recruiter, much like Chev has become a WR only recruiter. On an offense with Danny Langsdorf, Mitch Rodrigue and Brian Cook as the three other position coaches, you can't have two pretty good recruiters like Hagan and Chev not being heavily involved in the other positions.
Or, perhaps it was a terrible idea to hire #thesled in the first place. A lot of dead weight on this offensive staff. And in Rod’s case, that weight is quite significant.

So I went ahead and rewatched the game because I hate myself. The playcalling the first half (other than the QB sneak on 4th down) seemed pretty good, but I really wanted to go back through the second half to see what happened. Here's every play from the second half
Drive 1:
1st down- Quick out to Penry for 2 yards. Meh. This is the stuff Chev usually does too much of, and with A&M’s athletes they are going to close in fast enough to keep it to minimal yardage, but we get the ball out of Lewis’ hands quickly to start the half for an easy completion and positive yardage.
2nd down – Toss to Fontenot for 1 yard.
3rd down – Quick wheel route to Fontenot for a 1st down called back by a terrible OPI call. Good call by Chev there ruined by buff****
3rd down – Fontenot up the middle for a few yards. It’s 3rd and 19, just don’t do anything stupid and flip the field.
Drive 2:
1st down – Arias gets open on the double move but drops the ball upon contact, giving up what would have been a nice play. Would rather see these downfield shots go to someone like Rice, but the playcall itself was good
2nd down – Quick pass out in the flat to Broussard for 1 yard. Safety blew this play up
3rd down – TE screen to Russell up the middle for a couple yards. I actually like this call, the O-Line just didn’t do a good enough job getting to the second level
Drive 3:
1st down – Clayton run for 4 yards
2nd down – Play action rollout, Lewis keeps it and runs for a nice gain. More of this please
1st down – Clayotn run for 3 yards
2nd down – Play action rollout to Lewis’ left, incomplete to Rice. Lewis throws this too high. Decent play call IMO, gets Lewis out on the move and gets Rice in a 1 on 1 situation, I just don’t think Lewis has looked great so far rolling to his left.
3rd down – In route over the middle to Stanley for 5 yards on 3rd and 7. Not a great play call. Obviously would rather have Stanley run a route past the 1st down marker here, but I think he gets the first down if he gets up-field instead of hesitating.
Drive 4:
1st down – Fontenot rush for 5 yards
2nd down – Fontenot rush for no gain
3rd down – Incomplete over the middle to Stanley. Lewis throws it too high. Stanley was right at the marker and the defender was all over him, so I’m not sure he makes the catch with a better throw, and I’m not sure it would have been a 1st down. I’ve noticed that on these type of plays Stanley does a stutter step like he’s faking an out route before breaking inward. A slant would be better IMO
Final Drive:
1st down – They roll Lewis out right and he has Rice open near the sideline near a first down, but the lineman gets beat on the edge and allows a tipped pass. They blitzed from the secondary and we were slow to pick it up.
2nd down – Has Arias for a first down but ball gets tipped again. D-Line ran a stunt and made a nice play. But again it’s Arias so he probably would have dropped it anyway
3rd down – Traditional drop back passing play where Lewis has to survey the field. Hate this call here, you know you’re in 4 down territory, you don’t need to get it all on this play. Lewis takes a sack because nothing is open downfield. Primary read looks to be Arias on the in route which… why are we featuring Arias in a critical situation like this?
4th down – Pass to Stanley well short of the 1st down. Looks like it wasn’t the first read but I can’t tell from the broadcast angle what they were trying to do. Either way you need to throw it past the marker, but the bigger failure here by far was on 3rd down IMO
So overall, not as bad as I initially thought it was, but some room for improvement for sure. Broussard going down hurts. I know we all like our group of RBs but re-watching that game it’s clear that Broussard is a clear upgrade over the other guys.

Another reason to fire Chev! He rolled out a freshman QB to his left, against his strength, against a top defense when he should have rolled B. Lew to his right (his strength). This was obvious and happened often, B. Lew did not look comfortable rolling out to his left and the motion of getting set up left him too little time to set and throw accurately. This was obvious live, I could not watch these type of idiotic play calls a second time.
Broussard going down was another preventable injury, but Chev loves to throw wide instead of downfield. Good things happen when the ball is thrown downfield - rarely do positive things come from bubble and swing passes under Chev - can someone on the staff give him the data so he adjusts?
Thanks for beating yourself up. Good analysis but if you examine a single half of playcalling alone, especially the second half, it will look better than it actually was more often than not. I hated the fourth drive playcalling. It's like chev wanted to run out the clock by pounding the ball like we did 2 years ago against Stanford when sheanult stole that dudes soul. That was never going to happen against this team, the wheel route should've been called second play that series.

I get it with the 3rd down call since you wouldn't risk losing yards if you know you're in 4 down territory. But calling it again on 4th?
I’ll be honest, I was saying “just go again, just go again, just go again” when it was ruled short on 3rd down. I’ve never seen a QB sneak get stuffed like that. Our 3 IOL got absolutely destroyed by their two DTs and our inexperienced QB didn’t have the awareness to roll or move elsewhere to find any kind of hole

I watched a post-game aTm presser that included their DT Peevey (sp?). He was asked by their press about that play sequence. Said they knew it was coming and just got low for the 4th down.

Get ready to hear that statement from opposing defensive players a lot.

Last time chev called an offense a full season, defensive players started taunting the offense as they lined up by telling the O what play they were about to run.
I hope kd doesn't let it get to that point before he fires him, but we'll see.
Edit, I'm going to amend this. I *hope* Chev learns and evolves and history doesn't repeat.
If he doesn't, I hope KD fixes it before it gets too bad.

Judging by UNC's defensive performance at Houston Baptist, getting 35 points on that Bears defense with no game footage of that defense doesn't seem too bad. Bears had one player who picked off the QB two times and returned one of those for a TD plus one DL (#34) who had three sacks, four TFL, two fumble recoveries and was named Big Sky Conference player of the week. That same player had a sack against CU. If that Bears defense can slow or shut down a triple option attack this Saturday after playing against a no huddle, spread, pass heavy offense, that UNC coaching staff would have to be viewed as legit...that was a great team effort by the Bears at HBU and coaching had to play a part in that.
If that is the case, Chev could get a free pass for the UNC game performance since that UNC defensive staff would have had all summer to study CU's offense plus all that D1 transfer influx to Greeley.
But I think CU should have done more against A&M though. The Minnesota game is going to tell us a lot about this year's team imo.

UNC whipped HBU on the road who lost 27-17 at New Mexico. Based on that, it’s possible UNC could beat CSU & Wyoming this year. AFA, CSU, Wyoming, and UNC will always have overlooked CO kids who will treat the game against CU as their personal Super Bowl.
35 points with a vanilla offensive plan against a fired up local team with a freshman QB making his first start…some reassessing should be done for that game. Especially when there was scant information on UNC’s new schemes & players. Just write off the UNC game as a preseason type of game and not count this against Chev. Utah & ASU scored about just five more points against their Big Sky opponents than CU did and if CU has the intel on UNC like Utah & ASU has on their Big Sky opponents, CU probably puts a couple to a few more TDs on UNC for a decent showing like ASU & UA would do to NAU and Utah to their regional FCS opponents such as Weber State, Idaho State, and Southern Utah.
Now if the Buffs O can’t score 20-25 points against that Gophers D that gave up 25 points to Miami OH, then the heat will be on Chev.
Not only that, but he doubled down on that hot take.
