My question is, Prime is still in the infant stage of his coaching career and the hype is 100% real. What happens to his hype (IF) in the next couple years we dont see improvement on the field and 9-3 is all we ever get? No conference championship, or playoffs. How long does the national hype last, another year maybe 2? The hype only continues if he delivers. Does 9-3 support the hype nationally?

I think this makes it difficult to understand his value 4-5 years down the road.

Note that I am on the side of pay the man whatever he wants.

From what I was told, the maximum Prime stays at CU is 3-4 MORE years (to see Juju through his career), so we shouldn’t worry about that kind of thing. The primary focus of the University should be to give him everything he wants over the next 3-4 years to keep building the brand, make as much money as possible, set the expectations for future coaches that CU is a great job, and position itself for a B1G or SEC invite during the next round of consolidation/conference expansion.

I don't think that Coach Prime can answer today what he will want to be doing in 2029. I think it's more a matter of him being a guy who honors his commitments as long as the other side of the agreement honors theirs. So he's not going to sign something which goes beyond the timeline he is confidently committed to completing. I know there's a part of him that feels appeal to the Bobby Bowden / Mickey Andrews career arcs at FSU.

Their trade situation is crap. They're over the cap and that's without Dak's contract hitting. Nobody is going to take on Dak's contract full on, which puts JJ in a go cheap mode, plus they're going to have to give up draft picks, taking away a source of cheap players.

So maybe that's why even JJ isn't going to do it. Like I said, if Werder is right (and he's not a guy who would be falling for a "leak to put pressure on CU" gambit) and the pieces were falling into place to get Shedeur, Prime could be introduced soon. If it's not happening, it's because the pieces aren't falling into place.

A small thing: CP opened the door for ex-NFL stars to get into college coaching, like Michael Vick. I think he takes pride in that. It would tarnish that accomplishment, and his legacy, if he booked.
 
Is the University and Rick George unable to come up with the money?
Is Prime helping push every donor, board member, and even the Endowment to make it happen?

Of course we can afford it. The Boulder campus has a $2.3-$2.5B annual operating budget and someone said the uptick in application fees alone have netted CU around $8m. This isn’t a run of the mill coaching contract like Dillingham got. The complexities of it that need to be in writing are extensive.

Also, what did the University think was going to happen when they hired Prime and what did they think it would take to keep him? The literal best case scenario for the University after two years has come to fruition so this should be expected.

I also disagree that the other coaches salary market has to be considered. There is no other coach in the country who means more to the school than Prime does to CU. That alone should mean that CU and Prime completely reset the market.

Can the school use other funds, such as endowment, or other means to make the final push to get this done and to re-enter big boy football? It is amazing how quiet and private they are able to keep information from getting out.
I ask these questions, because it feels like even Prime has an idea of how and what the school needs to do more than the school does in order to be prepared and willing to head into the new CFB era and be a top 25 brand, and the school is grappling with it now.

The school has never before helped pay for a coach’s salary so that is not applicable until they actually do so. Someone here posted they have already agreed to help with the salary for players. That does not mean they are going to also help with coaching salaries on top of that.

If they don’t have the right coaching staff, agreeing to help pay the players is kind of worthless.

The University has never before benefited financially from the Head Football Coach like they are from Prime.

Generally speaking, schools can take money from their endowments, but it usually has to be for a very specific/earmarked reason: student scholarships, research funding, construction/maintenance, etc. There's usually an annual cap on what percentage a school can take from their endowment each year (usually around 4%). Whether CU has earmarked athletics, specifically football or coaching salaries, in their endowment I have no idea.

I think the way that other schools have done it is by giving the coach some sort of role or title within the university separate from the HC role and responsibilities.

I’m not. Fully aware that Saliman and Schwartz are committed to athletics. Hence the acknowledgement of them assisting with the player salary pool. That’s also brand new territory for every school across the country. So that’s not really relevant when looking at the school’s willingness to help with coaching salaries, something they could have done when RG himself said he did not yet have the funds to pay for all of Prime’s contract.

I feel like you think I’m hoping they won’t help, which is not the case. I hope they do, but it has never happened in the history of the school, even in the last two years where the pro athletics president and chancellor could have changed that.
