DeSoto Boys - coming out party?

LaViska looks like the Buffs best receiver when he gets on the field. Maybe because he just runs fly patterns and doesn't have to know the route tree or block much.

Laviska's line the last 3 games: 2 receptions for 100+ yds and one late hit, not bad for an 18-19 year old kid. Nixon has caught a couple of slants and returned a couple of KO to the best of memory. Hopefully there is a next year.

KD is playing a ton on special teams and is doing very well there. On kicks and punts (not talking returns) he is down field as a gunner and really going all out. He is contributing to the team and this is a part of our uptick in overall special teams play.

Everyone who is talking about them, transferring, read this. You are a ****ing moron. They are getting playing time and contributing.

They will both be big for this team next year, they know it and so do "most" fans.

Those same fans are the ones claiming for MM to be fired. It's what they do.

KD and Phil in the backfield together would be awesome.

Great idea!!! I have mentioned that I like the Pistol / Inverse Wishbone formation that has Montez in the Pistol, then a player on his right and left and one behind him. Put Frazier on one side, Nixon on the other, and then PL at Tailback. Motion him or create multiple plays out of that formation to create speed sweeps, etc. Also could run some killer wheel routes. I am still waiting for an old school Option Play to show up. Pretty sure that Hagan can show everyone how to do it.

Shenault has the chance to be one of CU's GOAT WRs, IMO. He already looks like the most physically imposing and athletically gifted WR we've had here in a LONG time, and so far, he's shown the ability to be both a possession and deep threat receiver, who can play any spot on the field. Call it hyperbole if you want, but his skill set seems to be a mix Spruce, Bobo and Richardson. Height and length of Bobo, possession abilities of Spruce, and speed/deep threat ability of Richardson... Oh except he's probably 20 lbs heavier than any of those guys.

I'm continually amazed by the love affair Buff fans have with antiquated offenses which hardly work at the high school level these days.

In Barzil 2, there is a thread called, "Bring back the I-bone!" Some have called it offensive.

Antiquated? Nobody is asking for the option back! The concept is creativity and innovation. The Buffs go into the Pistol-Diamond formation a couple of times per game, and I just feel they do not get creative enough out of that formation. Running an option play of some kind 1-2 times per game is innovative and can catch the defense off guard. The Veer and Option are not coming back, but running something that catches the defense off guard is good. Better than running 7-8 QB Read dives up the middle! However, I would kill to see Montez run a RPO to PL, then Nixon comes around and follows him down the field and an option pitch happens about 20 yards downfield just like Hagan to JJ Flannigan! Just pulled that up on Youtube and damn was that sweet.

So don't have a base offense with bread and butter plays you use to set up your tree of follow-up plays and impose your will on an opponent? Instead, just hodge podge a bunch of creative, unrelated formations and plays together so you can be creative? Still go fast and with tempo? Accomplish this with 20 hours a week of college practice time?

I think the wrinkle they've added with their diamond formation and a small package of plays out of it (or, usually, motioning out of it after forcing defensive personnel) is quite enough and beyond what most OCs would do.

This is the Pistol-Diamond or Pistol-Full House Formation and the Buffs use it occasionally, but I only see power run and time wasting out of it.

Many plays that could run out of this, and KD Nixon in the backfield with PL and Frazier could get creative. But, probably way over Lindgren's head. I also feel like this formation when used as Play Action could help hold up against blitz or pass rush with extra blockers to assist the OL.

  • HB Counter
  • HB Zone
  • PA Slant
  • PA Flood Comeback
  • PA Flood FB Slip
  • Tr Op HB Switch
  • Slants

So how many series per game would you like to run some other offense than the CU offense?

Or Lindgren could keep using it like he did on Saturday. Apparently it isn't so far over his head afterall.

Lol, "Way over Lindgren's head"... If 4Bienemy were talking to someone who had never heard of CU football, said person would walk away thinking the offense was being coordinated by a first year, little league coach.

Explain to me exactly what our Core offense is first, because it still seems confusing to me from game to game or series to series. I feel like we are a Pistol-RPO team. However, I feel we do not use enough pre-snap motion or maneuvers to help the QB determine what exactly the defense is doing. Many times we are in a very standard 11 personnel, with 3 wideouts and a token TE blocker usually on the open side of the field. Our play action game is pretty poor at the mesh point, and the QB has to find which WR ran the best route or opened up enough to zip the ball into.

I would like to see Full House be a part of the core offense in which they might motion in and out of it. It does not need to be a separate part of the offense, just a version of the core via motion and pre snap adjustments and maybe they have 7-8 plays in the formation, especially on short yardage. However, just like you said, the formation can be used to setup future play calls in the game. Such as 2nd and short where you throw in a good play action fake to take a shot down field. Montez was way more successful this past game because he looked like he was totally willing to stand and throw the ball even if he might have been hit.

I just want to document one of the more respected members of the board acknowledging the idea of new wrinkles being added to the playbook over the course of the season. Carry on.

There was a great example of what I was talking about and Lindgren called a good game. It is not over his head, but I am just so done with his play calling as a whole. If and when he can continue to call a good game, then I might re-evaluate my opinion of him. He has a long way to go, but the Cal game and the play that was just shown is something we should see more of.

So when the receiver has 2-3 steps on the DB and the QB hits him in stride a couple times, it's a great play call, but when the receiver has 2-3 steps on the DB and the QB drastically overthrows/underthrows/throws out of bounds multiple times, it's a horrible call and Lindgren sucks. Got it.

Buffnik, you know your ****, so I am not trying to be combative. Just feel this offense does and should have a lot of juice in it, but the adjustments are sometimes not there. I do respect everything you have stated.
Does anyone ever have access to the All-22 film so these things can be reviewed by us average fans?

Your issue with the pre-snap stuff has a lot more to do with where our QB is on his ability to audible and make pre-snap adjustments.

Most of the offense is a limited number of base plays out of multiple formations, which allows the team to go fast.

Seems like most of the variability with personnel is through our TEs being able to play as an H, Y or slot. What I've been wanting (and I think this is where KD could be used and probably Lee next year) is some of that same formational shift that can happen with a guy who can be either in split backs or motion to the slot. Bish and Lindsay could certainly do some of that stuff since both are capable as both blockers and receivers.

Mac started out at SJSU as a pistol formation offense derived from his first OC. Lindgren was brought in and handed that playbook and told to run that offense. Over the years, Lindgren has been given more control and evolved the offense into a multiple formation, multiple set system that runs primarily out of a shotgun snap. The basic formation an offense uses is immaterial to the system that one runs and all offenses should have some mixture of short yardage under center and pure passing empty backfield type sets to be effective. The base set is 1 RB, 1 HB, 3 WR in various locations. It appears we run a man blocking scheme on run plays with a pulling guard on the edge plays (although I could be wrong on the pulling part). I think the route combinations are changed week to week in order to take advantage of what ever defense we are playing. Most of the issues this year have been execution problems (drops, bad passes, missed blocks). In essence the system we run is a concept driven one, not a formation driven one.

They will for sure. On P5 programs on which there's consistent pressure on the coaching staff to deliver NOW, Shenault would be starting. MM has the "luxury" of not doing that, if that's luxury. I'm not inside the program so maybe LS needs improvement on blocking, routes, etc, but he's so more clearly athletically talented than any of the other WRs (than arguably Bobo), that it's ridiculous.
