Do you still enjoy college football/sports?

Seems like I’m in the minority on this one. Yes, I don’t love that every offseason is now going to be filled with learning a bunch of new players and seeing current ones leave with more frequency. But other than that, I have loved CFB even more the last couple years which I didn’t think was possible. It’s more competitive, storylines are more intriguing, and with the new playoff format CCGs will become important again. I’m also excited to see a playoff with 12 teams where teams outside of the SEC/B1G will get a chance every single year with less bias involved

I have always been against expansion of the playoff but I also realize it was inevitable. I'm not in favor of the autobids but they came to a good compromise with the 5 autobids while still leaving plenty of room for the best at-large teams. My biggest concern is if teams will rest players although that should be rare situations with the incentive of a potential bye in the balance.

The schedule for the semi's and NC game kind of sucks although the NC game being on Monday has always sucked so that's nothing new. But the first 2 rounds are great with a tripleheader that Saturday for the first round and the 3 quarter final games on New Year's Day along with 1 on NYE.

None of it feels good or right but there were always serious problems, whether it was the 90s when 6-5 teams would get left out of bowl games, or well...for 100 years of Alabama handing bags across the table, to the broken poll system determining "champions". When I was younger I didn't realize that stuff was so toxic, but it was. Now we just have a different, more in your face toxicity. At this point, frankly, conferences should be disbanded, revenue shared with collective bargaining, and schedules need to be normalized. It's bat**** crazy insane that the SEC still only plays 8 conference games. It's nonsense that some teams play two FCS opponents a year while one conference doesn't even allow games vs FCS opponents. All this stuff needs to get normalized, but then it's the death entirely of college athletics and the rebirth as a minor league.

And NIL was completely botched by the NCAA. They should have done the revenue sharing that they're doing now from the sportsball video games, but allowing non program constrained entities to pay players is, again, bat**** ****ing crazy insane. We're already seeing teams stash walkons to save scholarships by just paying them. That's super messed up and is undoing 50 years of adjustments the NCAA has rightly made to level the playing field. The baby has gone right out with the bath water.

When Oregon landed a recruit before it meant something. Hey they like the culture, they feel at home, the program is like family, they like the Willamette Valley, whatever. They liked something, genuinely about Eugene and the UO and the program. Now as a fan it's so dissatisfying. Those 4 and 5 stars don't give a flying **** about Oregon football, they're securing the bag. None of this feels good.
I feel like you're missing a big point: the NCAA has lost bigly in courts on several of these issues.

Quite simply put: what they were doing was illegal, and many of the "fixes" you are espousing are also illegal.

Until you and/or the others who are bemoaning these changes actually take the time to understand and address the legal issues, or present a viable path to actually change the law, you're just another guy yelling at clouds.

It is not that I hate players getting paid. I am actually on board with it. The pendulum was way too aligned tot he schools for too long. Rules that penalized the student athlete or at least did not recognize the value they brought in. Draconian transfer rules even when a coach quit. I get it.

I just the link we have over compensated the other direction. There needs to be some guide-rails in place. Some type of rules that balance this thing out. There is a middle ground that will work. Hope we find it

Yeah. The playoffs are great. Too bad that every bowl season stars sit out, ostensibly, to protect themselves and their draft hopes. And that’s another thing that bugs me.

People need to learn to separate what’s happening on the field from all the stuff that’s happening off it. If you can do that, it’s still enjoyable and entertaining. If you can’t it’s easy to see why people have issues.

For many of us, it's not simply sports entertainment. There are reasons why we care more and differently than we do about pro sports. If those reasons are taken away, it's just watching minor league sports which very few of us bother with in basketball, baseball or hockey.

And also embrace the changes coming to the college sports model. Bitching about the changes will not bring the old system back.

I don't think the changes to the college sports model is going to change the way how I cheer for CU and I agree with what Jens is saying. I could not give two hoots about what Shedeur or the rest of the Sanders clan is doing in their free time and the same for any CU athlete because like them, I got a life to live.

This,

The only way we see any kind of order or structure restored (other than that which favors the TV networks and the schools they pick to focus there money on) is to see something happen in terms of federal legislation. That as well will end up having some issues people don't like.

You think that people are saying they're being turned off by college sports because of the TMZ drama around what guys do off the field?

I understand that. But that doesn’t change what I said in the other post.

I agree with this

I also echo Niks comments.

I also note that following off field news contributes to the enjoyment of the on field happenings. It's kinda the reason why this message board exists.

The transfer portal has an effect on the team makeups. But once the things kick off it's all about the game on the field and at that point it doesn't matter to me if the players are getting an NIL deal, are getting paid by the schools, if there's a corporate logo on the field, or if the conference has a brand sponsorship.

There's certainly a lot that will be different about college football this season. Despite all the changes I know one thing that this season will involve, and that's me watching as many games as possible.

There are people like that out there and unlike them, I tune out that off the field stuff.

I predict I will not be watching this sport anymore in a couple years when Prime is gone.

That might happen to me too but every time I turn on my XSX, I'll be seeing that college football game telling me to play it and come back to the sport LOL.

I'm dropping professional sports for college sports though.

I get what you are saying but even before the BCS, weren't bowl games a way to drum up excitement for the upcoming season other than playing for all the marbles?

The thing I struggle with the most is that I don't know the players any more and don't have confidence that many of them will stay more than a semester. There is a mercenary feel to this. And with that, so many of the players aren't connected. They don't know or have much interest in CU, its history and traditions, its rivalries - not even learning the fight song.

The stuff that we see from off the field with all the media they dedicate to it is something I think is very positive because it helps me get to know them, relate to them, and care about them.

I still love it but I think there needs to be some regulations to it, if possible. Holy hell, it's the fvcking wild west. Some dudes have transferred like 3 or 4 times. I have zero problem with guys making money off their name. How the fvck you go about regulating it, no idea.

It’s not just CU though. The entire sport has turned into this with most players going to the highest bidders.

I will also say that I doubt many of the guys who went to Alabama over the last 16 years actually cared about Alabama and their traditions and fight song. They went because they got paid a lot and wanted to go to the NFL.

I think the last 20 years of CU football has made fans find ways to connect with the team in other ways than the performance on the field because it’s been so bad. Winning will fix a lot of this mentality

I see a lot of posts saying “When Prime is done here, I’ll be done.”

Keep in mind how we got here: Saliman asking RG “who would move the needle for us?”

As long as we have leadership that gives a ****, I have belief we should be able to at least maintain in the vicinity of whatever level Prime takes us to. It’s a **** ton harder to build something than it is to roughly maintain it.

My interest in college football is actually about to increase. Conferences will make sense again, restoring regional rivalries. Rosters won’t be so messy and I’ll never have to deal with players committing to 5 different schools over a 3 month period again. And CU will be a powerhouse with many championships coming soon.

Of course this will all be happening on my PS5 with the new game. That’ll be my new reality, and I can’t wait!

Remember when you used to look forward to watching the Olympics?

Aside from like two or three people, we had no idea who the athletes were, but we were going to cheer for them, and learn who they were as we went. And then, some of them would always come through and bring glory to the good ol US of A. And when the games closed, everyone knew their name.

Well, that's my approach to CU football now.

Aside from like two or three guys, I have no idea who is going to be taking the field. I'll find out about them as the season progresses and they march on to victory after victory.

I've got 15 or 16 games to get to know who is on the team - that's plenty of time.

It will be a historic fall and winter watching them bring glory and greatness back to the black and gold of CU.

This is a football thread, but I agree with you on the Olympics. I'm not sure if it is too many sports now, the All-Star (team USA practices for 3 weeks and plays) feel of the team events or the TV coverage (maybe the lack of print coverage), but I feel less and less jazzed for the Summer Olympics than ever before. I still like the Winter Olympics a lot, but it seems like they are getting saturated with so many events as well.

I love the Winter Games
Biathlon is the best
Skiing and target shooting
Prehistoric awesome
Summer Olympics is a bit boring
Like the Sprints
Gonna enjoy all the other Mens BB teams besides ours.

That seems to be my approach too and no waiting two to four years for the Olys.

I think fans who were really into recruiting as part of their year college football addiction are feeling a little bit of a "hole" in the calendar. With the Internet a cottage industry was born around recruiting - Rivals, Scout, etc. - and it grew to be a force in the world of college football. Keeping fans attention during the off season similar to the NFL draft. Drama was created around who did we offer, who is visiting, who has put us on their final list.

It would appear much of that has been lost with the increased emphasis on the transfer portal so I believe some fans who really enjoyed following recruiting feel like something is missing.

You can say you only care about the games and what happens on the field but that is not all that College Football is about. There is obviously a lot of turmoil in college athletics and it will impact fans perspective.

Understand that part and it's a matter of choice how closely one wants to follow the team. If that player is making plays for the Buffs on gamedays, I'd take a closer look at that player.
