Game thread- Men's bball opens the season facing South Dakota in Manhattan, KS (Wed., 11/25, 6:00 PM MT, ESPN+)

Outside of the 3's from Horne and the free throws from Walker the bigs have been disappointing tonight, too many fouls, losing the boards in the second half.

We didn't see any of Tad's teams patented dry spells and for the most part I thought we actually ran an offense on almost every possession. Team defense needs to be cleaned up but that's understandable for the first game. Overall I'm encouraged. The new guys look good. Battey had a bad game and we know that's not going to happen all the time.

Go buffs!

Gee, maybe this "Keeping your team together on campus all summer" stuff actually works!
Hint..hint...hint....Tad ...hint...hint!!

A lot to like and plenty to fix. Just how a coach likes it.

Kin was great.
Parquet continues to play solid D and gives you just enough on offense.
Horne will be a nice scorer off the bench.
Battey was not good.
Walton looked better than he ever has here.

Walker will be a very nice played for us. Not as bouncy as Bey...but who is?
Think Barthelemy will smoothly transition into the PG spot next year, which is nice.

The freshmen as a whole have nice length and talent, but there a lot of learning to be done.

Team was not disciplined last 25 minutes. Lots of stupid fouls, and I thought there was maybe one bad call against CU all night.

Having Kee was huge for the offensive consistency

Small but non-trivial plus getting O'Brien and Clifford their first minutes, even if just garbage time.

Depth is probably going to be a huge factor this year.

Seeing that much run and production from freshmen in an opener is not normal for a Tad team when he's got so many established vets. He must really like our young guys. It confirms what we thought about the recruiting-- and next year's frosh are supposed to be even better.

I think Tad also knows this season is going to be a battle of attrition, and, whether he wants to or not, he's going to need the top 12-13 guys to play meaningful minutes at some point.

EDIT: and that shouldn't sound like a knock on the frosh, who really did look pretty pretty pretty good for their first game.

Mostly agree; also think that Battey and Walton getting in serious foul trouble, along with Horne picking up a couple early fouls and Schwartz being not available forced his hand.

I think some of that comes from the team being together on campus all summer, which is not normal procedure for Tad! I can only recall one time when he kept the team together over the summer. That, plus it's a "free year" no need to red-shirt anybody, so play 'em all!.
