Games thread- MEN'S BBall back home to face #21 West Virginia (Sunday, 1/12/25; 1:00 PM MT; ESPN+) and (RV) Cincinnati (Wed., 7:00 PM MT; ESPN+)

This.

We shoot well enough, defend well enough, and rebound well enough to play Top 25 teams straight up. But the turnover differential is resulting in losses.

TO's under pressure are understandable up to a point but.... Dak threw 2 passes to WV's bench, there was a least 2 other passes to dead air, and a handful of others the defender had an easy steal. Need to clean that up.

Also, there were 6-7 other instances where we were shook by in the face pressure and almost lost the ball.

We're going to be in almost every game we play. That said, 95% of them are going to end just like this because we aren't tough mentally, won't be as athletic as all of our opponents, and simply don't have that one clutch player. To that point, spend some real money and add one more transfer...ONE DAWG...and we're sitting AT LEAST 11-4 right now.

I think a win over Cincinnati is pretty important now-this team drops to 0-5 in league and this could get ugly.

Fire Tad.

I will give more blame to Tad on this loss than usual. He really bungled subbing out Baskin and not using one of the 3 TOs he had left when 2 minutes of game time passed with him waiting to check back in while we were still down 2-4 points…then used that timeout to give WV a chance to draw up a play when they had the ball, resulted in an and-1 that sealed it

also, I love Diop but the dude needs to get more physical when he posts up. passes to him seem to get deflected a lot

hope RJ is ok cause Ruffin couldn’t make a bucket in crunch time and committed 3 fouls and 2 unforced turnovers in the last 5 minutes

regardless, I have a lot of fun watching this team and they do not quit

I'm worried that the Keg is going to be a ghost town. Students get back this weekend, but it's still the Denver metro and the Broncos game conflicts with the tip time.
So, among my friend group that I usually go to games with, there were only two regulars with any intent of going to the game yesterday. The rest were checked out (I'll blame the Broncos, but it's possible something else came up). One of the regulars was bringing his cousin who usually doesn't come to the games.

Both regulars are MBB season ticket holders (I got a free ticket from @BuffDog -- thanks again!), and both were more interested in the NFL game. Sunday morning text from Jack: "I'm going to the Dark Horse to watch the Broncos. Depending on how that goes and what mood I'm in after, I might walk over to the basketball game." The other friend confirms he and his cousin are in for that plan.

I decide to prioritize time w/ friends and meet them at the DH around 12, even though my desire to attend the hoops game is way higher than my desire to watch anything on TV. I get to the Horse around 11:45 and the game is close, making me realize I won't be seeing tip off and maybe won't be seeing any of the hoops game. Then I recall Scotch's post:
I'll probably get downstairs when it opens and watch the Broncos till its time to head up for the tip. And then I'll probably have the game on my phone if its close.
and I realize that if I can get my friends over to campus, it becomes a near certainty that we see at least some of the hoops game, and puts us a 3 minute walk to our seats instead of 15 minutes when that time comes.

At halftime of the NFL game (we're still at the DH), I suggest to my group "what do you think about walking over to the Events Center and watching the second half from the practice court?" Everyone thinks that's a great idea. Win for hokiehead! We walk over, the cousin isn't clear what's going on and I explain, "yes, we're going to walk to the arena and get our tickets scanned for the basketball game, so that we can go to a different room in the Events Center where we will watch a football game on TV". Whatever, we settle in at a table in the IPC and Jack buys a round of beers.

When the MBB game tipped off, they turned off one of the TV's and most people left for the real game. My buddies wanted to keep watching the Broncos. I'm again weighing my desires to see the MBB game vs being a friend, and end up trying to watch two games on TV's on opposite sides of the room. When Buffalo scored at the start of the 4th putting the game at 28-7, I comment "I don't think Denver has given us any reason to believe they're capable of scoring three touchdowns in one quarter..." and stand up, but Jack says "I'd kinda like to see how they answer..." Given that Jack bought the round of beers, I shut up and feel resigned to watching the next drive.

Finally made it upstairs with 9 minutes left in the 1st half. Pathetic crowd. I did like the way CU hung in for the second half, but jeez, this is going to be a long season.

One thing about the crowd is that it was basically a neutral site game. WVU had at least 1/3 of the fans in attendance, maybe closer to half. Props to them, but frustrating as a Buffs fan.

There were quite a few WV fans, but I'll give them props that they were generally friendly and not ubnoxious. It makes me want to go to Morgantown for a football game

Yeah. I have no complaints about their fans.

Fwiw, I think what they did, a moment ahead of the game, is far more reasonable than killing the vibe of the event with a mid-game honorarium, like during a timeout.
Fair. I was expecting halftime or maybe after before/with Glory, Glory since I didn't see the pregame.

THE BUFFALOES: Colorado is 9-6 overall and 0-4 in the Big 12 Conference play after falling to No. 21/23 (AP/Coaches) West Virginia on Jan. 12. The Buffaloes are 0-4 in conference play for the first time since 2016-17, when Colorado dropped its first seven Pac-12 games before rebounding to win eight of its last 11. Overall, it's Colorado's first four-game skid since dropping the final five games of the 2019-20 season ahead of the COVID-19 pandemic and the cancellation of conference and national postseason tournaments.

Colorado is averaging 74.5 points per game, shooting 46.3 percent from the field and 35.3 percent from 3-point range. Defensively, Colorado is allowing 71.0 points per game while opponents are shooting 42.1 percent.

The Buffaloes rank second in the Big 12 in free throw percentage (.772), sixth in defensive rebounding (26.8 drpg) and seventh in assists (16.7 apg) and 3-point percentage (.353).

During Big 12 play, the Buffaloes have upped their free throw accuracy to 79.2 percent, still ranking second on the league charts. Colorado is also fifth in assists (15.8 apg), steals (7.3 spg) and rebounding defense (34.0 rpg).
...

ABOUT THE BEARCATS: Cincinnati is 10-5 overall and 0-4 in the Big 12, joining Colorado as the last two teams without a league win. The Bearcats are averaging 73.1 points on the season, but have been held to 55.5 points an outing over four league contests including back-to-back games of being held under 50 at Baylor and against Kansas. Cincinnati sports the seventh-best scoring defense in the country allowing just 60.5 points per game. The Bearcats guard the perimeter exceptionally well, ranking fifth in the nation in 3-point percentage defense (.271).

Junior guard Dan Skillings Jr., leads Cincinnati at 12.7 points per game, shooting 45 percent from the field. Senior wing Simas Lukosius averages 12.3 points and 3.2 rebounds with a team-best 35 3-point field goals. Junior forward Dillon Mitchell tops the Bearcats in rebounding (7.1 rpg) and steals (25) while pitching in 10.9 points on 66.1 percent from the field. Fifth-year post Aziz Bandaogo averages 8.7 points and 5.9 rebounds while leading Cincinnati and ranking fifth in the Big 12 in blocked shots (1.7 bpg).

THE SERIES: This will be the ninth meeting between Colorado and Cincinnati and first in 42 years. Cincinnati holds a 7-1 advantage, winning the first seven before the Buffaloes picked their lone win in the last meeting between the teams, 79-65, on Dec. 18, 1982, at the CU Events Center.

Colorado and Cincinnati met six times in the 1960s, an era where both program enjoyed success on a national level. The teams battled in consecutive NCAA Midwest Regional Finals in 1962 and '63, with the Bearcats winning both over the reigning two-time Big Eight champions. Cincinnati's 1962 team won its second-straight NCAA title and fell just short of a three-peat in 1963, falling to Loyola Chicago in the NCAA championship game.
