Games thread- MEN'S BBall on the road to face Oklahoma State (Sat., 1/18/25; 1:00 PM MT; ESPN+) and then host BYU (Tues., 9:00 PM MT; ESPNU)

Gotcha. No, I don't see this search as anything like the Prime hire because the bar is so much lower, and the rewards too. We should be shooting for a coach that can have a steady, quality product on the floor year after year. If we get that, season tickets will be steady. Denver folks will want to make the trip because they'll know what to expect. My #1 complaint with Boyle is that his recruiting is all over map year to year, and we have years like this one where we have BIG gaps in our roster. Thin at PG, thin in the post - that should not be happening in any coach's 15th year in the same program.
Fair take. Any Boyle replacement has to be more willing to play the NIL game than he is, and that's another problem with looking at somebody like Russell Turner from UC Irvine. That's really not a factor at that level.

UCF and TCU at home our best shots at getting conference wins? Assuming the team hasn't completely quit by then.

This sucks.

But wouldn't a coach like that be dying to have some NIL money to work with?

I'm sure, but I'd rather have a coach who has some idea for how to use NIL and recruit in this era.

UNC doesn't need much money to go get a Tanner Braketa from Ralston Valley-who they've got committed.

Y'all thinking RG is gonna fire tad are hilarious
Agreed. RG is far too lazy to hold his basketball coach accountable. Due to his negligence, Tad receives an automatic yearly extension, regardless of performance. He would be owed $10.4 mm if terminated.

To top it off, “Tad Boyle, the head coach of the University of Colorado Boulder men's basketball team, earned $2,634,000 in 2024. His salary for 2023 was $2,425,000." A $200,000+ raise to produce this miserable product in 2024-2025.

TDS did so many things for us and was so much better in all aspects of the game than we ever gave him enough credit for. Probably the biggest criticism I have of him as a Buff is that he wasn't selfish enough about getting his.
Yeah but he’s top five in ROY odds for a playoff team, so he’s getting his accolades.

re: 'ridiculous' -- just noting that I spent most of my sports fan life on the east coast in ACC territory and 9PM local tip times are really normal there. Wake has one tonight, Duke has an 8:30 on Monday, Pitt and ND both have a 9PM tip on Tuesday.

that said, I'm traveling for work tonight (to ACC land, actually) and can't make the BYU game. Two members of my friend group were also trying to give away tickets for tonight. I guess I'm part of the problem.

I think Boulder is just not an area that digs late night activity, which I see as strange for a college town, and I can't really explain it. I've been surprised since moving here 11 years ago that Boulder only has one 24 hour restaurant and zero 24 hour grocery stores.

however, I was remembering the 11PM tip off vs Auburn in 2014 and just looked up the reported attendance of 9800 -- that is a higher number than we've drawn so far this year. 🤷‍♂️

I took the day after off of work for that.

I think that may have been 'tickets distributed'. Solid crowd, but it was carried by students.

Denver is an early morning area. My office, for example, opens up at 6 or 7a, to play catchup with you east coasters. A similar company (logistics management) out east probably would start much later.

Time zone definitely changes how people live. Heck, just that difference of prime time tv being 7-10 instead of 8-11 impacts our flow.

I'm going and I found a taker, but I still have a handful of tickets because the rest of the guys can't make it. The students have missed all of conference play so let's see if they can fill have the student section. It would be nice if CU did something to get the students at tonight's game. It helps that the cold weather is past us becasue if the game was last night you might have had 100 fans at the game.

Quick BYU Story. Went to the game in Provo back in 2016. Why? Well... I don't really know how to respond to that other than I do stupid things and convince my friends to do them with me.

Anyway, the game starts, and we're doing OK. Trading buckets and leads. Some random dude in front of us asks if we've ever had a "Cougar Tail". We, of course, say no -- dude comes back a few minutes with an 18" maple donut. Weird, but nice; also a lot of sugar for like 9p.

Into the 2H, we go on a run and even seem to take control. Then, out of nowhere, this children-of-the-corn 9yo girl behind us starts singing religious hymns. To herself. It was creepy af. At that moment, BYU went on a run, took back the lead, and ran away with it. I may not be Mormon, but this incident gave me tremendous pause.

Needless to say, I have never gone back to Provo, and do not intend to.

Last year at the Big 12 tourney we mingled with every fanbase. All had their ups and downs, but all were at least approachable and would talk ball with anyone and everyone.

Except BYU. Their fans refused to talk to anyone else.

Creepiest damn fan base.

I love the uncertainty this implies, as though you may be unaware that Joey Smith has reserved a spot for you in the next plane of existence.
I think the way it works is that whether I'm Mormon or not, I could become one posthumously if one of my descendants joins up and has me baptized from the grave. Apparently, it's really important to be united for eternity as a heavenly family within that religion. So I - and the rest of you - may not be Mormon, but....

Is it possible we sat next to each other at the AFA game in 2016? Those stories ring a bell.

Dirty fvcking mormons playing dirty. Holy sh!t. The refs aren’t even catching half of it.

Tad is PISSED.
