Games thread- MEN'S BBall opens Big 12 play hosting #3 Iowa St. (Monday, 12/30/24; 7:00 PM; CBS Sports Net)

Don’t know but he gobbles up space and blocks out allowing the team to rebound as a whole. Dak kept getting pushed under the basket. You don’t have to actually collect the rebound to be a good rebounder. Evan Battey was an expert at this.
Yeah, Malone failed at blocking out in that last stretch too.

Damn. It was there.

Team keeps playing like this and they’re going to make a lot of us - myself included - eat crow.

To rally back from 10 down in the second half and take the lead w 5 to go is wild. Without our best defender and solid team rebounder.

The 3 at the end of the first half killed us. Let up too many offensive rebounds which is what ISU does.

RJs growth is incredible to watch!

Also Dak had an absurd stat line 4 points, 8 boards, 5 assists, 2 blocks, 1 steal and 4 turnovers. If we could just get him to not take a 3 the rest of the year I swear that would do so much good for him!

Didn’t see the game. Checked the box score. Was the free throw disparity legit? 22 to 8 is a huge difference.

Yeah. Officiating seemed fine.
It wasn't bad overall...but I gotta say this given I get paid to do that-Tony Padilla got caught out of position 4-5 times tonight as the lead and had to guess because of it.

ISU took complete control of that game after that timeout Otzelberger took when we went up 5. They're ****ing good-and they have four really big men who can play physical at the rim. We've got one and two shot blockers. Teams like them will eat us for lunch.

Last thing-there was a ****ton of red in the CUEC tonight. This program deserves better than that.

Too many turnovers in the first half.

Great game from Hammond (other than the missed layup).

That oop to Dak.
Hammond has been really solid so far, maybe our most important player or even our best player. Jak would have made a big difference tonight.. defense and rebounding especially

Great effort. Great crowd (best of the year, out drew CSU by 14).

I hate losing to these jaggoffs from Ames but I guess there's a reason they're ranked so high.

And speaking of ISU's ranking, it did occur to me during the game that CU marketing could have done a better job reminding fans they were hosting the #3 team in the country last night.

Thanks again @jsmilkst and @Goose for the tickets.

I will say all the doubters tended to focus on Hammond not being a source of confidence.

So in a way, they were right, this team will be about as good as Hammond allows them to be.

Good heavens, we're soft up front. I knew it was going to be bad, but I didn't think it would be *that* bad. Malone ate up some space, then... nothing -- I thought he was unplayable in the 2nd half. I lost my **** when Tad put him in for the final stretch, and, sure enough... Assane not jumping for that 3rd ORB ISU got on that 1H possession summed up the game for me -- he's up and down, as expected. BD and Assane made for *nine* turnovers -- not all their fault, but still. Sebi and Trevor had more efficient lines than their practical production equaled. That said, I think all forwards will learn from this effort.

I thought Julian played extremely well after some early issues; every minute he was not on the court was a problem for me. Shocked to see RJ miss his 2 open threes in the 2nd Half; he grew into the game overall after a shaky handle to start. Ruff is 3-4 steps slower than this level of competition, but somehow kept having an effect -- heady player.

That alleyoop to BD in the 2H was the best execution of a breakaway 'oop in my 23 seasons in Boulder. I was stunned.

Playing Kossaras in the close of the 1H was a mistake, led directly to 5 points. That's on Tad, trying to be cute.

Props to Tony Padilla for trying to keep the Pac12 whistle alive down the stretch. That overall whistle was an eye-opener for this team. The amount of contact they were allowing, both sides, was a shock to my system, certainly. Harrison took advantage; he was the only forward who seemed to understand the assignment, and only got called for one foul... somehow.

That effort beats Arizona, Oregon, UCLA, USC... different breed in this league.

I loved the B12 whistle. P12 officiating drove me ****ing nuts with how soft it was. It also fits what Tad wants to do.

If this team just cuts out 5 of the unforced TOs (Dak, Diop, RJ, Ruff... ****, most everyone had a few) we win the game. ISU was obviously on another level talent wise and Tad dragged them down into the muck with us. As you noted, he made a few mistakes with inexperienced or new players and that cost us... but he only had so many cards to play and needed to steal minutes somewhere.

I will be honest. I don't like watching this team. Last few years have spoiled me. Their D and rebounding is spotty. There is little excitement in their play. Last night made me hope that Tad's doing something interesting here.

Offensively, there's some spice. This continues to be a program that can execute and get open looks, even with a guard rotation we all were unhappy with coming into the season.

Defensively, and on the glass, they just... aren't up to code. I likend our effort last night to a drunk in a bar fight, and I stand by it.

Losing a game because we couldn't rebound or get stops at key moments is SO FRUSTRATING. I can handle insane turnovers, Tad has numbed me to them. But giving up 20 offensive rebounds? I can't handle that on an emotional level. I know we missed Jak against their guards on D, but our front court, as you noted above, was, collectively, often unplayable despite Dak posting some highlights.

It is weird how nice the offense was in spurts despite the TOs against that D.

Just looked at Kenpom, and the D is 53 and the O is 120, so Tad's doing good work with this group despite their limitations. It's fascinating in an ugly way. But the D needs to be elite to have a chance against good teams. And yea, they aren't. Stretches of good, but lots of random, frustrating, easy buckets for good teams.

My god, it really was 20 offensive rebounds, wasn't it? **** sake.

That 3 ORB sequence really broke me, man. Assane not jumping for that last one... and Tad even let him stay on the court after that. "Crime, boy, I don't know."

Great crowd? Way too much red and yellow in the building.

Ready to eat some crow re: our backcourt. While not where it should be, Hammond, Smith, and (a healthy Ruffin) look like they should be more than serviceable through conference play. Where I'm shocked and pissed is our frontcourt, namely Malone. Playing against likes of Pacific and Bellarmine hid the fact that he is soft as butter and still somewhat out of shape. Maybe the fact Brock Wisne at UNC absolutely bodied him should have been enough foreshadowing. We're going to have problems against every legit frontcourt if a switch doesn't flip. If he doesn't win the battle against two true Frosh (Quaintance and Thiam) in the next two games, we know we have a problem.

Do we win if Jak plays? Oh, what could have been...

Strong effort last night, but ISU is so rock solid and like I said yesterday we really don't match up well against them. Let's win at least one on the road next week!
