Games thread - MEN'S Bball scheduled to host Utah (Sat., 2/12/21, 6:00 PM MT) and visit OSU (Tues., 7:00 PM MT)

I think people are forgetting who is out with injury and who is coming in with this class already. This gives Tad some flexibility to take BPA with a spot that opens up if JW leaves. Normally I'm all about PG (@Goose has convinced me) but Lawson has underperformed despite flashes of promise and there are a lot of bodies at the guard position that can play PG minutes. Plus we have a point forward type in Silva.

Playing PG minutes this year: KJ, Hammond, Kee (hell, even Nique).

Injured and could play: Ruffin

Coming in: RJ Smith.

Granted, not a single one of these guys came in as a PG (most CG, some SG). So Goose's point stands. Still, the only upper classmen in this group are Nique and Kee, and all have shown they can contribute.

On the other hand, if JW leaves, this is the sum total of our frontcourt next year going by positions (C or F):

Lawson (7 footer)
22 signee Hurlburt (6'10")
Tristan Da Silva (6'10")

You could throw Quincy Allen into this but he'd be out of position despite being 6'8".

That leaves little to no room for an injury. Seems like the bodies suggest you have to replace JW with a big guy.

I still would be fine with a proven PG though.

That Utah game exposed our vulnerability to length. We need more talented big men to keep close to Arizona. I’d be thrilled to see Diop and Fall become Buffs. I have confidence in KD and Kee getting better. Super star PGs out of HS are rare and often one and done unless under sized.

Agree that we defended well the 2nd half with Battey and Jabari and often double teaming. Next year 1 or both will be gone and Jabari for sure in 2023 at the latest. Should try for a 1 year transfer big next year and at least 2 bigs in the 23 class. Roster will be thin the rest of the season so the can’t get in foul trouble.

ABOUT THE BUFFALOES: Colorado is 15-9 overall and 7-7 in the Pac-12 Conference, picking up its second-straight win in come-from-behind fashion, 81-76 at home against Utah on Feb. 12.

Colorado has bounced back from double-digit first half deficits in two of its last three wins. The Buffaloes were down 15 in the first half at Oregon before winning 82-78 on Jan. 25. Colorado trailed Utah by 11 on three occasions, with the latest coming at the 15:50 mark of the second half (49-38).

Colorado has won 38 of 55 (38-18) dating back to the beginning of the 2020-21 season.

The Buffaloes have fared well in tight contests. Fourteen of Colorado's games have been within six points - or two possessions - with four minutes or less remaining in the game. The Buffaloes are 10-4 in those contests.
...

ABOUT THE BEAVERS: Oregon State is 3-19 overall and in last place in the Pac-12 at 1-11. The Beavers have lost their last nine including a 76-65 setback against Stanford on Feb. 12. Oregon State is averaging 67.4 points per game while shooting 44 percent from the floor. The Beavers rank last in the Pac-12 in scoring defense (75.0 ppg) and field goal defense (.465).

Jarod Lucas leads Oregon State at 13.7 points per game and has a team-best 53 3-point field goals. He tops the Pac-12 in free throw shooting (.875) and ranks sixth in 3-point percentage (.405). Warith Alatishe averages 10.1 points and leads the Beavers in rebounding at 5.8 per contest. Dashawn Davis averages 9.2 points and leads the Pac-12 in assists at 5.4 per game.

SERIES RECORDS: This will be the 30th meeting between Colorado and Oregon State with the Buffaloes holding a 19-10 advantage. Colorado won four of the last five meetings including an 86-63 decision in Boulder on Feb. 5. Oregon State has won six of 11 all-time meetings in Corvallis, but the Buffaloes have won the last two.

Wilner's Power Ratings for the Conference were updated today. I was literally thinking almost exactly what he wrote after watching the Utah game and picking at our remaining schedule.

8. Colorado (15-9/7-7)
Last week: 7
Results: beat Utah 81-76
Next up: at Oregon State (Tuesday)
NET ranking: (last week: 92)
Comment: The Buffaloes have six left and are good enough to win five. Of course, they’re also bad enough to lose five, which explains why they’re 7-7.

4 of those games are teams ranked behind us, plus Stanford #6 and Arizona #1.

Too many turnovers still, but great on the boards and sharing the ball. Nice end to the half thankfully. Was worried it would be close and give OSU too much hope.

Well they have hope now, mother****er.

Guys, I happy about the win but c’mon. Oregon State is straight ass. Win the next two and we’re talking.
True but you gotta play who is in front of you. Worry about the other two when you get there. Looking ahead is a good way to your ass whipped.

LOB had an amazing game. If he can become a legit scoring threat, that is a huge boost for this team next year

there is no way to quantify how much different teams have been hurt by covid: from individual players missing games to schedule disruptions. The NCAA will have and, I hope use, more discretion than any season before. My hope is they over-emphasize the last month/tournaments. Go Buffs!
