I'm excited to play GA Tech and it should be a great home & home series. I think these match-ups may become increasingly rare given the new CFB landscape. Although I'll be at the game, I'm glad they moved it to Friday and on National TV. It is always an interesting game when we play a good team from the ACC (old Big East) or SEC. Many of the games tend to be pretty close, home or away. We had a good series with GA (as I recall we split that and almost beat them at home, Stafford was benched) and when West Va. was in their heyday (again a split). Florida State was not as close under Bowden. In 94' or 95' we hosted a barn burner v. Miami with a pre-game brawl. As with CU playing in the hot muggy south, the altitude should have some impact. I expect the atmosphere to be electric given an opening night game.

I read a tad on GA Tech last season and forgot that you guys were so close to upsetting GA losing in 8 overtimes. Under Key/Weinke are you guys still running some option/read-option? I see that the scheme is run heavy, but it seems like you had some games with significant passing yards. What happened in the Louisville and Virginia Tech games, was it turnovers, QB play away, defense or just getting jumped in a road game?
Miami - 93. But yeah; good info.

I agree there are definitely some flaws. However it’s a starting point to some extent.
Yeah. I think it's a conversation starter. Where I think it's useful is comparing players on the same team at the same position. That's the best data since it removes as much variability and review inconsistencies as possible.

Even with that, I'm constantly getting 3 different evaluations from games. Like with OL grades. What I saw with my own eyes, what grade PFF gives each guy, and what the OL coach releases with his grades never come close to agreeing. (But of course I'm the one who's right. 😂)

I think PFF is overly critical in some instances so when someone has a high score I generally think it means they are a good player if that makes sense. There are definitely times I’ve seen guys have good games with poor scores though.

lol it’s good my wife asked me today if the fans are trashy there since we are going to the game. I told her no, they are pretty good!
Cant Speak Nathan Fillion GIF

Then we DEFINITELY screwed up. Everyone is supposed to hate us! The polls say so. (And it's true, most people are greeted by a **** you)

Josh Pate is pretty high on GT this year, and said to definitely bet the over on them for season wins. I recall he talked the same way about Iowa State last year and turned out to be pretty much on target. Makes me more anxious about this game than I already was.

So I’m actually pretty optimistic as well I’m just trying to temper it a bit lol. Heres some interesting stats I posted on GT’s rivals page. The grades list are PFF, keep in mind an average score is 60.

DT: Alexander: 75.8 run grade (UCF transfer)
DT: Stone: 73.3 overall grade (Ole Miss) was one of the top rated DT’s returning to the SEC going into 2024 season.

They will play along side 2nd team all ACC DT Van Den berg (transferred last year from Penn State)

DE: Triplett: highest rated defensive player for UTSA in 2024
DE: Hoffler: played as a reserve for Clemson last year.
DE: Manley: southern conference defensive player of the year, 80.3 grade, 54 pressures, 10 hurries, 9.5 sacks, 18 tackles for loss. (Mercer transfer)

LB: Jordan IV: captain for Oregon State probably a depth piece.
LB: Spaulding: 76.1 grade 11.5 tackles for loss (Tennessee Tech)

CB: Mitchell: played at Penn state as a true freshman including all their playoff games.
CB: Hill: 68.9 grade started as a true freshman for the 18th ranked passing defense in the country. (UAB transfer)
CB: White 66.2 grade honorable mention all-Mid-American Conference and honorable freshman all American the year before. (Eastern Michigan)
Nickel: Gilmore: 70.0 grade (GA State transfer)
Might be bad news for us facing talented run defenders.

Our running game stunk last year (part because of the emphasis on Shedeur,) we are hoping that Shurmur (our OC) and Prime are going to emphasize a more balanced attack this year. Playing a team that is tough against the run might be problem for an offense trying to figure out how to run the ball and might scare the coaches into going pass happy for the following weeks. Our WRs will be a handfull for anybody we play but was hoping to see us have some success on the ground.

So all 11 starters are transfers? Something is going on at GT! Looks like they got serious about football.

Actually no, Van Den Berg is our all ACC DT, then both LB’s and Safeties are returning and a CB. The other 5 spots are up for grabs and could all be transfers imo. We just got a lot more depth and completion now which has hurt us in the past. As for getting serious about football they really are since Key took over as HC, he played at GT and it seems a lot of donors are behind him. We recently raised 500 million for sports and are doing numerous renovations to the stadium and the football building.

Our run defense could take a step forward imo this year. Where we struggled bad was getting a pass rush and the secondary at times struggled. We went heavy in the portal to hopefully fix those issues, only time will tell though.
