Maui Invit. thread - MEN'S BBall (Mon., 11/25/24-vs. (RV) Mich. State, 3:00 PM MT, ESPN2; Tuesday-#2 UConn or (RV) Memphis (ESPN or ESPN2) & TBA Wed.)

Anyone notice the comment from the ISU assistant coach during the timeout before halftime? "Turn them over. They cannot dribble."
Dude was on the money. Other opponents will learn and follow.

I’ve gotten mad at Tad at the past, including on this board. There are going to be lows (at least we don’t play at Cal this year) but there are also going to be incredible highs. Just enjoy the ride.
Better get those highs in before February. Just sayin'. Calling 14 wins. Was 13, but nobody saw the UCONN win.

If we can finish the non-con clean at 9-2, there's a path to winning 1/3 of our Big 12 games to be at 16-15 on a postseason bubble entering the conference tourney. I'm not sure there's much upside potential beyond that. I'd be extremely satisfied if Tad pulled 16 wins out of his ass this year.

He’s responsible for that roster tho. He f*cked up. Like Self admitted he did last year. We all saw the problem at PG. It’s not like this is a surprise.

7-13 in conference is a pipe dream.

I dislike watching Hammond more than about any player at CU in the last 20 years. He's a turnover machine, with little athleticism, who thinks he is much better than he is. This team is going nowhere this year, but the head coach appears to have a lifetime contract.
They beat the 2 time defending national champions YESTERDAY, and UConn is going to be right there this year.

Shut the **** up.

I’m not sure this UConn team is that good. They lost a lot.
You could make that argument, but I think they're still making the NCAA tournament and will likely win a game or two.

I still think this CU team will get to 7-9 wins in league.

I don't know where we consistently get a halfway effective threesone to get buckets. And despite the disrespect for Hammond on here he is one of those 3. KJ and McKinley spoiled us all. In fairness they had more to work than JH has although if we had KJ he'd lift this team higher.

With the new NIT selection rules that record gets us in.

This might be the only Tad big man ever to dominate like this. ****in Malone is sonning mother****ers out there. Scott was a goddamn beast, but Malone is a hulking brute who will punch you in the ****ing mouth.

Would've loved to see him go up against bitch ass Tarcziewski and bitch ass Ayton.
Wait til you guys get a load of Hunter Dickinson.

I understood being “right there” as being much better than just making the tournament.

Yes, they will make the tournament. They are not nearly as good as they were the last two years.

We'll see. Let's see what happens.

Good test in Maui for this team we knew nothing about. Quick impressions:
  • Coaching: Got their hands full getting this team to gel. SO many disparate parts. Good talent, but we see the dropoff from the vet team from last year in terms of boxing out, helping out the guy with the ball, communicating on defense, etc. Team isn't showing much toughness yet on simple things like securing rebounds, taking the charge, etc. This team has more talent than I expected, but very raw. Let's see how things change - 3 full months of BB till any post-season stuff.
  • Hammond: Not a complete guard, but a damn good guard. I don't understand the hate. Put a scoring #2 next to him and he's a weapon. Instead he is the weapon, That's a recruiting failure, not a Hammond failure.
  • Jakimovski - way better than I expected. Didn't see him a lot last year, but he was a key cog on a very tight squad. He's our best player right now, but need to see him get to the rim more. Love the deep threat, but that's easy to guard if nobody else is on fire.
  • Malone - great potential, love the size, but soft hands so far. Really glad we have Battey and Manning on the staff to get in his ear. This kid seems smart - I expect him to adjust better to double teams, to box out on every play, and to grab some damn rebounds. The offense will come.
  • Baskin - great upside, but the sooner he learns his limitations against WAY better competition, the better he'll be. If we're a decent team in February, he'll be a big reason why.
  • Diop - keep expecting this kid to turn the corner, and he's showing signs. I'm already seeing a lot more confidence - expecting that to continue. Also looking to see more off the dribble - we desperately need it. Very solid defender, doesn't ever seem to hurt us.
  • Ruffin - he's a veteran now, tough luck career so far, but his time to shine. Betting he's feeling the pressure, that this team's weakness is at the 1 & 2 spots. Absolutely deserves to be guy behind Hammond, but we need a higher level if we have any plans of making noise.
  • Dak - another Soph just starting to the turn the corner. The tournament had to be really, really big for his confidence. If only Battey could teach him to eat American food. Offensive game will be a challenge. Reminds me of Wes Gordon.
  • RJ Smith - great potential, love the confidence. Seems like he has the right attitude. This tourney will pay off for this kid also.
  • Rancik - out of control much of the time, but he's a physical specimen. I sure hope he can stay in the rotation. Seems like he's barely hanging on to the 2nd line, but the upside is fun to think about. Hell, the kid might not be done growing - 6'9 Frosh, very solid core.
Kossaras, Anderson, Carrington: There are 9 guys above. I don't see more than one of these three playing much. I suspect the coaches really want Kossaras to be that guy, but he needs to grow up in a hurry. (Sorry if I forgot anyone.)

Carrington played 10 minutes, which is about 13 too many. Brings nothing to the court other than 5 fouls, which we didn't need today.

I was a fan of Rancik in his first few games, but now he doesn't even look like he's playing the same game as the rest of the team. Young, sure, but maybe needs to sit a while. Same as Carrington, really doesn't do anything other than keep more talented players off the court.

As soon as Baskin realizes he isn't a post player, maybe he will be useful. Tired of seeing him down low for absolutely NO ****ING REASON.

As I said the day before we played UCONN, the Huskies won't even win their conference this year let alone push for another Natty. This is by far the worst team Hurley's had there. Dayton's gonna give them everything they can handle.

Ya I think Dayton might win. UConn is 8.5 point favorite now, and I'm buying some Dayton tickets to pay for my dinner tomorrow

You're right on Dayton. They're good. They took ISU to the wire last night.

UConn's going to contend still I think. That league as a whole is flat bad. Marquette SHOULD win it, but Shaka Smart might be one of the most overrated coaches in the sport. Xavier got obliterated by Michigan tonight. Villanova dropped a buy game to Columbia. Seton Hall has losses to Fordham and Hofstra already.

Watch out for St. John's this year.

Big East may get a lot of teams in the Dance because it doesn't look like DePaul or Georgetown will be dragging down everyone's SOS.

Having the Johnnies and ol’ Rick Pitino back is good for the sport. I hope they when the Big East

And I think DePaul is finally getting serious between building Wintrust Arena and hiring Chris Holtmann. It’ll be interesting to see what they do this year

Went to the Big 12 tourney last year and they made Jayhawk fans look pleasant erby comparison.

That's Hilton South. Those people go to Kansas City or Oklahoma City when the tourney was there and support both the women's and men's teams. They are die hard fans.

There isn't much else to do in Iowa in winter and Iowa's men's team is mediocre at best this season.
