Moretti

Kutsch played in 51 snaps in that game, has played 50% more than Moretti, and actually graded out the highest in the game against NH (but essentially the same as Moretti for the UNH game).

Sherman has struggled the most of any OL who has had playing time, but to be fair he's the only young guy who got PT vs Nebraska. All the OL scores were rough in that game. CU provides grades only for "year to date" and "top game".

It would seem that Kutsch is now in the mix for OG, which allows Sherman to focus on OT?

I haven’t rewatched the game but while at the game, I noticed Moretti on one series. He was very slow to get up following a play and the offense was in hurry up and he barely got back to the line for the next snap and was completely ineffective. Basically threw himself into the hole the RB was to go through. Kutsch replaced him following that.

It is going to be a difficult balance with Moretti the rest of the year. Need to get him live reps to build his endurance/stamina, but he is going to be on a "pitch count" to reduce risk of any set backs.

I'm no coach, but it seems weird Sherman has graded out so poorly. In limited snaps he looks like an upgrade over Kaiser easily. But then maybe that's damning him with faint praise.

Sherman is the most physically gifted OT we have. That said, first item for grading OL is knowing the assignment. You can perform well and make a lot of plays work with superior athletic talent, however, you aren't going to grade well if you haven't grasped the plays yet and believe me, that is always evident to the OL graders and shows up much more in run blocking. Once this kid gets comfortable with the system and continues to put good weight on, he's an NFL guy IMHO.

Totally agree. I’m no expert either but Sherman passes the game action eye-test by comparison to Kaiser.

At the end of the day, let’s hope they put the five best guys on the field and allow them to gel. This tinkering around at the quarter pole isn’t good sign.

Wyo Buff stated (and we know he has insight) that Sherman was the most physically gifted but he didn't say he was one of the top 5 at this point in time. I think the grading bears that out.

Talent and athleticism cover up a lot of assignment mistakes. I'm sorry, but I don't really care how Kaiser graded out at LT, in terms of knowing his assignments, he is noticeably worse at playing the position than Sherman. Sherman IS one of the top 5 from what we've seen thus far.

He is getting a lot more snaps. Wouldn't be surprised if he is starting. That said, OL is pretty technical and we seem to have a lot of grading experts here without the benefit of the playbook. In other words, you are probably full of **** and don't know it. ; ) (Said in good AllBuffs fun).

Definitely am full of ****. I just don't really care for OL grades if all that really matters in grading out well is knowing the assignment. That should be part of the grade, but actually executing the assignment and doing it well should be about 75% of the grade, IMO. It was clear to everybody who watched the Nebraska game that Sherman is/was a better player than Kaiser.

That's only a portion of it. They wouldn't have Sherman in there if he wasn't competing. Kid's going to be a major factor for us going forward, I think. Like I said, he is performing right now servicably without. Just wait until the light comes on. I expect this group to get better and better as the year goes on. Could end up being a major strength by next year and the years after.

I really want to like this post, however, I fear my mouse exploding.

I like it. Keep building endurance and experience with Morretti. I like him inside and think he should stay there.
The Kutsch signing looking better and better if only to take the pressure off of Lynott and Tonz and give them some rest from time to time. It also frees up Sherman to take Kaiser's spot at LT.

I'm still looking for Ray and Filip to get some valuable PT this season. We finally have some valid options other than disaster.

I'm feeling a whole lot better about this group than at any point in the last 9 months.

It's possible that Sherman isn't grading as highly as we'd like as an individual, but is concurrently helping others to grade higher when he is in there. That's my observation at least, the whole line plays better (or at least that side, including Pursell)) when Sherman is in.

OL grades are also not a quantifiable statistic like yards or catches or even tackles. They depend a lot on what the coach who is grading looks for. Is it based on assignment or on impact. I've seen in the past with CU line grades guys getting graded high who where in the right place at the right time but who were getting blown up by the guy they were supposed to block.

One issue with Sherman vs. Kaiser is that Sherman is clearly a better athlete than Kaiser. There are things they can do with Sherman that are hard to do for Kaiser because he simply doesn't have the kind of mobility that Sherman has. He may know the assignments better and be better at taking the angles the coaches want but Sherman has better feet that allow him to do some things that you wouldn't want to ask Kaiser to do.

I think we see Sherman quite a bit in the UCLA game. We may never see a full game this year with Moretti. It will be a process and a very slow process, unfortunately.

Good point on Moretti, gotta wonder how much he trusts it, dude missed a lot of time.

I thought each drive for the Buffs was approximately 2 minutes. How much rest do they need?
