Nate Landman appreciation thread

(siap elsewhere) Since we have a thread about Rodrigue and Broussard, I think we need one for Nate. We all know he's a great college LB, so ddin't want to stick with the "How good is..." title. Simply put, he's been outstanding. The last two games have been remarkable, and with all due respect to Chido and others, he's the best defender I can think of in the last ten years, if not more. Today, he picked up the Bednarik Defensive Player of the Week:

Along with the Nagurski Player of the Week he received a few weeks ago, and the Butkus semifinalist recognition, he's putting together an excellent senior year. I know there are often multiple players that "deserve" the college football awards and brand recognition is often in play, but I really hope Landman continues his strong play and gets to be a finalist for one of the awards. If gets to be a finalist, who knows....

He's playing off the charts. Which makes me wonder, what happened last year? Was it a scheme issue? I don't remember him being injured, but perhaps that's just bad memory. Because last year he really didn't play anything like what we're seeing now, or even as an underclassman.

When Nate Landman went into Lincoln as a sophomore in 2018, and straight up dominated, I knew we had a special player on our hands. He looked a step slow and a little out of place in our defense last year, but this year has been a quantum leap forward for him and the defensive line (They deserve a lot of credit for Landman's play as well). We have the best front seven here since 2001 IMO, and Nate Landman sits in the center of it all.

Now I’m not saying he is some amazing cover linebacker but remember when MM said the reason he didn’t get more time a couple years back in that game at ASU where he was completely kicking ass was because he wasn’t as good in coverage as... Gamboa?

Thank God I don't remember this statement. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if MM said that. He said a lot of things that left me thinking he needs a brain scan.

I got to watch Urlacher play at UNM. Landman reminds me a lot of him at the collegiate level. Urlacher was much quicker, but they hit with equal intensity and they both are quick to make the right read. Landman's liability will be his speed at the next level but I'm sure we'll be able to watch him on Sundays. Glad he's a Buff.

Wasn’t Urlacher a safety in college, or was that high school?

He ended up playing kind of a hybrid role. Franchione played him (sparingly) as a LB, then he left and Rocky Long converted him to a Lobo-Backer (cross between linebacker and free safety.) It's funny, he really did play all over the place (some WR, and he was a return specialist - which I had forgotten). Dude was special. Here's his wiki.

I saw 3 of his games in person, meaning Urlacher. Dude was a freaking safety at the time, and he returned punts here and there. Just a great player. Linebacker was his calling, though.

I have a friend who is a UT fan, married to a Nebraska fan and I watched that game over at their house. My friend was not very familiar with CU's roster, and just about every play he was like "Damn, 53 is in on the tackle AGAIN?! That dude is near the ball on every play!"

If it really is an achilles, he needs to take advantage of the extra year of eligibility.

That's a loooong recovery, long enough that next fall might be a no-go for him no matter where he is.

He might be better off staying here, rehabbing on our dime, and trying to show at a 2022 pro day.

His draft stock won’t get better by waiting and not playing. If he decides not to declare, he should come back to play. Otherwise, go rehab on NFL dime.

I am not saying he should do this, but he would likely get a medical hardship waiver if he wanted to sit out next year and play in 2022. It’s probably best for CU and him if he were to get picked up as an UDFA and just rehab in the league tho

I don't see him getting drafted with a blown achilles, do you?

I don’t know. Jake Butt got drafted by the Broncos in the 4th after ACL tear in a NY6 bowl game, but he was going to be a 1st rounder.

Landman was probably a day two pick at best, so likely slides into later rounds or out. Tough decision.
