White has been impressive, it's more than I expected of him, honestly.
Yep. Spencer learned to play defense at CU. Doesn't generate a lot of steals or blocked shots, so the defensive counting stats don't get padded. But it forces opponents to shoot difficult shots without getting fouled, leading to a low percentage and a lack of defensive breakdowns in the team concept because you stay in front of your guy. Requires a lot of discipline, but it's the most efficient way to play since it also leads to everyone being in position for good defensive rebounding.

If he was looking for his shot even more he would have scored 46. But he def plays within the system so rarely will he score this big. Pretty much a complete and smart player who is content to do what his team needs. We were so fortunate to watch him his one great ear here.

As much as Pop and RC Buford deserve their due credit, I don't really enjoy the narrative that RC "found him" and Pop developed this nobody into a star. Like, he was already really good, his age/height (being 5'10 out of high school and being the oldest player in the draft) is the only thing that's ever held him back. Credit to Tad/Pop giving him the confidence he needed to put on the sort of displays he did late in his Senior year and what he's doing now, but this is all Derrick White.
Wish he was doing this to another team, but really fun to see him get his moment in the spotlight. The hardcore NBA writers/analysts have loved him all year, now the average fan is getting to see what he can do. He's not elite at any specific skill, but he's pretty damn good at everything. Love that his reaction to the steal and big jam was to immediately start playing defense and trying to get another steal.
Great coaching and systems allow an athlete who puts the work in to reach his potential.
It doesn't make average talents appear great.
To compare it to old school NFL -- Joe Montana and Steve Young were great quarterbacks. Bill Walsh did not turn them from average players into all-time greats, he allowed them to reach their potential. Similarly, Mike Shannahan allowed John Elway to reach his potential in a way that would have never happened within Dan Reeve's system.
In basketball, we've seen that a lot with coaches like Phil Jackson who got MJ, Scottie, Shaq and Kobe to their peak potential while also getting the most of role players on his rosters. Larry Brown took Iverson's game to a new level. Pop has done it with a bunch of guys and is currently the best in the business. This takes nothing away from D-White, just makes it so we'd say he has been fortunate to be in a position to benefit from great coaching.
