NCAA 2024 Tourney game thread - #5 seed WOMEN'S Bball - 2nd round game @ #4 seed Kansas State (Manhattan, KS; Sunday, 3/24, Noon MT; ESPN)

The 3 point line issue would have been fixed if it had happened on the men's side.

In 1993, Iowa was forced to have 5 on 5 girls' high school basketball. Six on six players had a difficult time transitioning to the 5 on 5 game in college. There were several players who threatened to sue the girls' athletic union and they finally caved.

The player who had scored the most points in 6 on 6 history went to Iowa State. She was not able to convert to the 5 on 5 game. She mostly rode the bench for 4 years.

The Athletic Union at the time was run by a very protective old man named E Wayne Cooley. He thought he should protect all of the girls who played basketball in Iowa. He felt girls shouldn't sweat and there shouldn't be much contact.

I'm sure he rolls over in his grave with how the game is played today, even at the high school level.

The last director retired this year. She had coached in college and had to grow the state tournament again. Fans were really not accepting the 5 on 5 game. For a few years, schools had the option of 6 on 6 or 5 on 5. Now it's all 5 on 5.

One of Iowa State's freshman played at the smallest classification of schools. She signed with Iowa State. She improved with each game this season. If she had to play 6 on 6, she wouldn't be playing in college.

One thing kids in Iowa learn to do is shoot free throws. It seems to be a big empasis in high school. Iowa State recruits a lot of Iowa kids and every season the Cyclones are in the top ten in the country in free throw percentage.
