Is Wilson a good-to-great recruiter?
I didn't follow recruiting closely when he was here, so maybe someone else remembers. I saw someone post on 247 that he was criticized for his recruiting at CU but then he was one of the best recruiters in the Big 12 when he went to Oklahoma.

So maybe if he wasn't great here there were reasons around what Barnett emphasized vs what Bob Stoops emphasized at Oklahoma & what Dan Mullen emphasized at Miss State (where Wilson next coached)?

If he isn’t a good/great recruiter it seems hard to justify hiring him.

I have to ask. Is the fact that he’s been mostly one and done a red flag?

He did 4 years at CU, then 4 years at OU, then 3 years at Miss St., but more recently he took some jobs where the head coach got canned quickly, so you kind of get the one and done. His resume is pretty typical for a position coach.

His time at Miss St means he probably has a good handle on recruiting the south if we still want to focus our DLine recruiting efforts there (and I don't mean just the Mississippi jucos)

I’d be lying if I said it was great at CU. He signed some decently rated players, but several didn’t pan out. I think it’s safe to say the DL group was not very deep when he left but there were a lot of factors at play at the time.

Biggest concern I’d have with Wilson is that he’s 51, so not particularly young, and he’s been in the NFL for the last four years (thus, not recruiting).

Just a head up but Feldman was asked yesterday where MSU would go now and his first response was that Mel Tucker had a lot of support within the admin there and thinks they might make another run at him.

Ole miss fan on light rail this morning was going on about how they have Kiffin now and they will be winning the sec in three years

51 is old now?

That's Coach Kapolivic's age.

It's a great thing to have some of our assistant coaches be guys who have had jobs in high level programs and bring 25+ years of experience to the staff.

You also need some of those young guys, but the mix is important.

Ha. “Not particularly young” /= “old”

I’m certainly not upset about it, but I think a Wilson hire would be in the “we’ll see” category. Just my opinion. He did coach a pretty good DL at CU with McChesney, Sam Wilder, Abe Wright among others. Like I said, when he left after 2004, CU was rolling out David Veikune level players. But, there was so much noise at CU at that point, it’s hard to lay that at the feet of any position coach.

I'm questioning where did you actually hear or read that? I haven't seen a single source mention Tucker since his Saturday announcement.

Give those a read @Jens1893, and @Big Jim

Just gave the Russillo/Feldman interview a listen and Feldman's first response is Bielema which is who most the media has speculated on and went on to pose the question, should they make another run at Mel because he is so well liked and that MSU has more resources than CU. Doesn't sound like they will.

In the Altitude interview Mel VERY briefly confirmed the MSU interest before saying he is excited to be here. Quickly moved on to talk about Brumbaugh saying, "There's going to be interest in all of our coaches."

That's the world we live in now with quality coaches and a program finally trending in the right direction.

There is a report in The Athletic of a Friday morning interview in Colorado. Two MSU beat writers.

On the Russilo podcast? I took that quote as speculation just to prove his point that MSU admin are getting desperate, but it wasn’t a definitive statement that they would try again with Tucker. He definitely wasn’t reporting anything as fact. His points about Bielema being a good candidate I thought were good.

He was asked what Michigan State was going to do now and he said bielma wants the job and that tucker had a lot of support from the admin so they could take another shot at landing him because they have more resources than Colorado does.
