No thread-jack intended here, but I will offer up a small platter of Oakland, CA and Gary, IN.
Sure, and you can probably throw in some less than savory places like East St Louis and Detroit as well. Those places all have something going for them, though. Either they are big cities with some kind of local flair and vibe or they’re near big cities with interesting things going on. ABQ is all by itself with nothing of note to recommend itself. Imagine Lincoln, but 200 miles away from any place worthwhile (say what you will about Omaha, there are some not sucky things there). Santa Fe is cool, but it doesn’t make up for the ****tyness of Albuquerque.

I'd agree that once you visit the old Acoma Pueblo (60 miles away) and ride the tram up Sandia Peak the pickins get slim. UNM isn't CU, or even CSU, and for folks with kids the public school system in ABQ is pretty bad. There are some great places in NM, but they are welloff the beaten paths and away from ABQ. If you get out of UNM with a worthwhile degree you likely have much better choices than ABQ. Never lived in the state but have travelled there a lot over the years for work.

I find the only real compelling reason to go to ABQ is the food. It is, bar none, the best Mexican "type" food on the planet. After a large platter of huevos rancheros, the Mountain Biking is pretty awesome in the east mountain area as well.

Ever been to El Paso?
