Official CU vs Delaware Game Thread

Well that is ironically better because we do not want the players against each other.
I would literally just Fire Shurmur out the building
Feels like Bartolone would be the best option to take over Play Calling right now and have the GA's and Analysts fill in on TE's and QB.
I still say Shurmur did a tremendous job against Tech and by far the best I've seen from him. But yesterday was rough outside of the first drive. All QBs had to improvise. Juju struggled with that whereas Salter and Staub shined at it. That said, Salter is just a bad passer. I am just not sure about him in our scheme where QBs must move off the 1st option.

Simply put…no matter who is at QB, we need to utilize the run game, and TAKE SHOTS DOWN FIELD.

We have a bevy of big, talented receivers who can all make plays.

Bubble screens are fine…but not when you offer no threat over the top
this makes me think of greg maddux. shurmer is not operating in a way that has an intellectual end point. maddux (back when i was following baseball) didn't overwhelm anyone, but the progression of his pitches was intentional.

a bubble screen out of the blocks on first down doesn't do sh*t. if you run qb power on first down, off tackle on another play, play action and hit downfield, *then* hit a screen when the defense is looking all over the field it will succeed. but if you do it when the d can charge downfield it's pointless. same with play action. if you don't run the ball for a couple first downs, there's no reason to respect the fake.

Even though I advocate for JuJu, when Staub has played in the past, and granted it was garbage time, I’ve always thought he looked decent.
he played the whole game vs utah and balled out. let's not forget the two very bad calls that negated huge plays in that game. that said, i think shurmer calls the game differently for staub...in that utah game there was more balance and more intention getting the ball to 12. maybe that's staub's processing? but i think the evidence points to shurmer calling the game in a more positive way?

He is pressing and being used incorrectly
He should be a slant beast, but Shurmur’s too dumb and Salter cannot hit it
this this this. drelon isn't a classic WR. doesn't have the hands or wiggle. but get him on speed motion or a slant to his hands and he can house any play, especially if teams expect a CB to tackle him at speed. witness the utah game last year

The first two weeks are a glaring indictment of Shurmur. Plays he called were predictable and largely ineffective. The offense only had success outside of the framework he set up for the group.

Archer from Delaware shows that you can create schemes to free players and let them thrive. The only thing you need is for the players to execute. Delaware had yardage but our superior players and red zone adjustments made it so that they couldn’t score much. Schematically, their players were set up for success.

In consecutive weeks, we’ve seen what a good/great OC can do for a team in our opponents. It’s time to put Shurmur back in the analyst role and promote another coach to call the plays and be the OC at Colorado.

When exactly did Prime decide to play Staub? Earlier this week? Or after he saw Juju’s two series? His on-field interview made me think it was earlier this week.
Apparently Friday - Staub said CP called him and he knew he might play

The O should be good with Staub.

The D is a total worry. the Hens get 396 total yards. Us rushing 5 against the Hens was not effective. Our DBs struggled. Unless Del is much better than I thought, strong offensives will roll over us.

The big unknown is how Juju sees things, how he will react to sitting while Staub plays. He and CP are having a serious heart-to-heart today. I'm glad that Staub is only a sophomore.

CP says he likes having the HOF guys on staff, because they 'relate to the players'. I question whether they relate better than 'normal' college assistants. Those guys were so gifted athletically, that when they gave max efforts they succeeded. That doesn't work for less gifted players and they need more drilling on techniques, basics.

Yep! You get it. He just doesn't have the personnel yet or maybe he does and we are still growing to really show it. At the end of the day. Shurmur is a strategist, not a tactician

His strategy though is to not lose the game. And that is an okay strategy when your defense is good. However, just like last year, we have problems on D and we are going to need to be putting up 40 points a game to win. We need an explosive fast moving offense with a playmaker that can execute when shurmer puts us at 3rd and long(which he will).

I saw enough of staub that I feel more confident with him then anyone else so far. I also feel confident that Juju will get there.

I doubt Prime is going to pull Shurmer just yet. He is going to give shurmer a chance with staub running the show for at least a couple of games. Dude was in for 3 possessions and we scored a TD in each. You have to give him a chance with the OC he has been learning under for most of his time on the team.

This defense doesn't look that bad. They give up too many yards but it's bend don't break. This isn't 2023

It was going to be 2+2+2 no matter what, so it was Staub's time. The fact that he changed the play and directed the WR was brilliant, but it says one glaring thing = Shurmur is not even remotely in charge of or has a grip on the offense. It is not 7 on 7 sandlot league out there. No specific plan or control of how we operate. Yes, there may be specific plays that work better for each QB, but goddamn there has to be a CORE offensive scheme. I think if Leftwich were available he would be the OC right now, but he is spending time watching his son play for North Carolina, I think, so he is not available.

Staub watching Shedeur and learning to change or adapt Shurmur's play calls is like the Kobayashi Maru cheat code that neither Salter or Juju had. Juju can make all the throws and the majority of the WR's love him the most and are here to play with him in 2026 and 2027, so if he left, they would leave. It is obvious that Shurmur cannot continue as the OC next year either in order to help things move forward

Crazy crazy crazy thought everyone . . . . . . . Hire Eric Bienemy to be the OC moving forward :oops::oops:o_Oo_Oo_O
not sure EB and Prime would gel

While I agree its not 2023, or even 2024 and we have improved in some areas, we also dont have a heisman CB anymore and our linebacker play is bad. Our open field tackling has looked bad at times which is concerning.

I do appreciate their hustle and they can force turnovers and they dont give up, but I do not have confidence in them winning games for us if the offense isn't putting up alot of points. We need to remember this was delaware.

Listen, I’ve really liked Staub since he stepped foot on campus. There are tons of posts to prove it if you’re bored. But I do not believe he’s the guy to get us through conference play successfully.

BUT AGAIN, THIS IS NOT THE REAL ISSUE.

DO NOT BE DISTRACTED FROM THE FACT OUR REAL ISSUES ARE IN THE BOOTH. NOT ON THE FIELD.
