Let me put it this way. If he recruited to his full abilities, I believe they could have so much more talent across the board than the rest of the Big 12 that they could get away with mediocre coaching. But when he’s not dominating recruiting he needs really good coaching, which he doesn’t have.

So yes, I think it’s more of a coaching issue, but I think there’s a lot left to be desired in recruiting.

Well said. CP saved a dead program, so all credit to him. However, he is now paid as a top coach so if we look at his recruiting and coaching results, we need to wonder. While his recruiting results are ok relative to the piece of **** conference we are in, are those results worthy of his contract? No.

And, he has surrounded himself with mediocre coaches. He can fix both problems if he wants. I sure hope that he goes down that path.

Ok, fair enough.

Prime had a strategy of heavy portal initially, then a gradual shift to more of a prep recruiting focus. I think that was right. I also point out when you go down position groups, Prime has signed the highest rated prep for the majority of the position groups over the last 20 years for CU. The only preps that I can think of near his list are Paul Richardson (4* we fell into), and way back to Lynn Katoa (who every other school backed off of). You are literally going back to the start of the Barnett era, where CU was still drafting off the great Bill McCartney.

Recruiting has fallen off this year, but in light of bladder cancer, I get it. I’ve been there with my wife who has battled different types of cancer twice. It’s pretty distracting.

Oh for sure, but this isn’t just a this cycle thing, and we can compare it to the past 20 years of mediocre to absolute dog**** of CU football but why is that the benchmark in 2025?
 
Would you rather I’d have high 3* high school recruits who learn the system, put in the weight room work, and build chemistry with teammates for two years so that they are ready to be contributors in year three or a bunch of high 3* and 4* transfers who couldn’t win a starting job at their old schools and will be out of eligibility in a year or two? Give me the former. Even with better assistant coaches, it’s going to be hard to build teams with chemistry, leadership and a real identity when you’re turning over half the roster every year. The portal is important, but we have to step up the high school recruiting. I’d like to see at least 60% to 70% high school. It’s on the coaching staff to target guys who are willing to put in the development time and to build strong relationships with a clear plan for their 3rd and 4th years here rather than just saying, “Why would we recruit high school players who are just going to leave?”

This is especially true when you don’t have the money to win most of portal battles for the handful of truly elite guys.

Is this all a function of him being lazy? Maybe that’s unfair, but if so, it’s a function of a really ****ty recruiting strategy at this level.

They are definitely more talented as a team. We go 3 deep at some positions and we aren't playing true freshman walk ons as starters this year. But only one stud and we lost a lot of starters and didn't replace them with the same experience or production

There have been some good transfers but there's been a very high reliance on guys who did nothing at their previous school or were not good.

The portal should supplement the HS recruiting, not the other way around. Been saying this for a few years and questioning the strategy and getting **** for it.

Start 70/30 portal to prep and eventually land 30/70 portal to prep. I think we would’ve seen more prep commits so far, but the medical issues prevented that.

I think it's easy to lose sight of the fact that a lot of transfers have had 2, 3, even 4 years of eligibility.

Non exhaustive list of transfers who could be here next year:

Joseph Williams
Hykeem Williams
Tawfiq Byard
Zach Atkins
Damon Greaves
Dallan Hayden
RJ Johnson
Larry Johnson III
Jaheem Oatis
Sam Okunlola
Teon Parks
Makari Vickers
Quincy Wiggins

Roster building should be about class balance; and the Dorrell's teams were ridiculously unbalanced with too many freshman and sophomores.

I think we're tending to a shift to more HS and less transfers year over year.

The portal is likely going to be even weaker this year with the very last dregs of the extra COVID eligibility finally working out of the system.

I think you're right in a general sense that young transfers, and high school recruits should be the foundation with supplements from the portal, but we'd at best be on a 1 win, 3 win, 5 win trajectory year over year if someone came in and tried to build from the ground up with almost all HS recruits.

This is what’s missed. They always assume the portal players are one and done.

We had six 3 and outs, including an INT on third down.

We had one 4 and out with an INT.

We had one 6 play drive that ended on downs.

Our offense was lackluster. Their low time of possession (a little over 23’) made it incredibly difficult for the defense to recover against a very physical opponent offense.
 
Just need to get to Wyoming and play well to right this ship.
Recruiting hasn't been as good as we hoped for 2025 but it isn't over yet.
Portal was a whiff this year and the Portal exit was a kick in the nuts.
We sort of lost about 4 starters from the Defense, Hayes/McCoy/Hood/NHG and we are feeling the sting.
Talent is still there and the D coordinator righted the ship last year. I'm more concerned about the Offense. I have little faith in the O Coordinator.

Maximize recruiting for sure
The visit thing is no longer true
If he showed up at a game, it would be gold
He needs $50 Million in bags and he needs to visit all the 5* guys he wants

You can't possibly be serious. You think CU had 54 TFLs? Do you know what a TFL is? They had more hurries than Houston had pass attempts? What in the world are you on? They ran the ball 51 times for 213 yards but allowed 54 TFLs...

An example of this was brought up in the most recent DNVR podcast. The offense installed over the offseason has been scrapped. Many of the plays have gone missing.
