I was very negative about the team performance last night, just as much as the next person that was realistic about what we saw last night. But this is one of the most comically bad posts I’ve ever seen on this board, so congrats on that I guess?

How much would you like to post that CU doesn’t win another game? I’m happy to take that bet.

I’ve seen you post this take in 10 places, so I’ll ask you. If you were KD would you run much of your playbook against UNC? They’re a team that we can beat simply due to size and athletic advantage.
Yes you run a couple of the schemes, simply to get the players used to game situations, but beyond that why would you dial even 70% of your plays?

A good game plan for UNC is to use the run all night and drive down for TDs. Also get Lewis comfortable on some short to midrange routes, in order to build his confidence. BLew did not do a great job with the reads here, Shenault was open most of the night.

You’ll notice we were just as vanilla on D. Not a lot of blitzes or exotic formations.
 
I would not put too much stock in these type of games. A full scrimmage is probably more competitive. Players are not "up" for these games. Hopefully the coaches can look at the film and see what they need to work on to improve.

I thought it was fairly obvious that everything was pretty vanilla throughout. I’m not suggesting it’s to “save the real stuff for A&M” or anything, but it was clear they went into the game with a K.I.S.S. mentality and getting young guys experience.

On a side note, I think it’s possible that this is part of KD’s long term plan of getting young guys as much playing time as possible to start developing depth for the future.

Quick story - When I was an assistant high school coach, we had a very good team one year with state championship expectations. We lost a few of our starters in the latter part of the season and there was a major drop off between them and their younger backups. That offseason, our HC changed his entire philosophy and made it a point for all assistants to make sure we were regularly getting the JV kids more reps in practice and inserting them for meaningful snaps in Varsity games, sometimes even giving them a start here and there. The idea, obviously, was to get them experience early on so they weren’t pissing down their legs when they eventually became full time starters. It definitely helped in most cases and the following two seasons (my last) we actually started seeing the development. We’ll see.

“I’m so incredibly proud of the young men in our football program,” he said. “We haven’t played football in two years and we stood toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the Pac-12. Had a shutout for a quarter.”

I think giving the #1’s a chance to run the playbook in a live game setting is far, far, far more valuable than holding back and trying to sneak up on A&M with new looks. I also think giving your young QB opportunities for some downfield throws in a game where mistakes won’t be as costly would be extremely valuable.

Trying to break those things out against a far superior team doesn’t seem like a good way to develop a young QB’s confidence to me, but I’m just a fan posting on a message board so we’ll see I guess. I’m looking forward to the new schemes and wrinkles we break out next week.

The runs that were successful were outside, with the TE getting a block on the edge and the RB's making a guy miss on the edge to get the yardage. Literally, no other team on the schedule will give up yards to a run game that can only do that.

The game was replayed on Pac 12 Mtn earlier this afternoon, so I half watched it while keeping up on live scores.

It was just as boring as I thought it was last night from the Rooftop Deck. Weird to win 35-7 and have very little to be excited about.

This will be difficult against teams like aTm and Oregon.

CU will assuredly do it against some. TEs are good blockers, but will need to get better to consistently execute this.

I didn’t see anything last night from any OT that makes me believe they can do this on the weak side against any team.

it will happen with periodic, but not consistent, success this year IMO.

He's basically claiming this is a moral victory-essentially preparing himself for his inevitable application for the Nebraska head coaching job when Frost inevitably gets fired.

And Colorado kid Trey McBride went for 13 catches for 116 for CSU, and is projected as a 1st rounder and the best TE in the draft this year. One of the several frustrating recruiting misses in positions of need over the last several years

There are a lot of areas where they are not going to be as good as the tier 1 opponents on their schedule. The post I have responded to about this stated “they won’t be able to do that against literally any other team on the schedule”. Let’s not lose site of the good things this team did last night. I’ve never seen such doom and gloom after a 4 TD win, I don’t care who the opponent is.

Btw, Iowa State is in a dogfight against Northern Iowa, USC is up 13-0 on San Jose State, Miss State got blown out by La Tech and OU only beat Tulane by 5.
 
I love the week in week out cycle of AllBuffs "coach em up" and "we just need more effort" boomers that come in the live game day thread the day after and try and play Monday morning quarterback after the fact and say sh!t like "of course it's chicken little around here, sky is falling, we won easily and blah blah blah."

The reality is that...

1) Everyone is commenting live based on WHAT IS HAPPENING AT THE TIME. This team was flat. This game was closer than the score indicated. We ran away with it late.

2) A lot of the comments are based on assumptions made throughout the offseason. Between the few sunshine pumpers and our own staffs lack of action, we've commented that we are thin and/or weak at positions like OT and safety. Our tackles were bad, full stop. Basically "we've been saying this is an issue for months (years, decades), this sucks that we were right about it. Can't the staff see it? Why were we not recruiting OT last year?". We want to be wrong, and express our frustration that we aren't.

3) Chalking this up to week one, young QB, vanilla offense, whatever, doesn't hunt. We got beat in one on one's consistently across several positions. That has nothing to do with a vanilla scheme or week one jitters or inexperience. That's getting beat by the guy across from you that should be an inferior FCS player. That's concerning. Nobody is arguing our offense wasn't going to be basic this week without film, but execution and predictable, odd play calling has nothing to do with a vanilla offensive gameplan. Extremely predictable playcalling and not getting an athletic young QB out of the pocket more with plays that limit reads is concerning. That has nothing to do with the a vanilla scheme, that's just putting your team and players in the best place to win football games.

As you may recall, his older brother Toby McBride went to CSU, and Trey decided to follow in his footsteps. He was offered by CU, but I guess that counts as a miss nevertheless.
