Official realignment thread - SEC formally invites OU and Texas to join the conference in 2025

This is crazy.

UT/OU to the SEC looks like all but a done deal. The B12 is now dead.

Will the B1G grab KU and ISU?

What will the P12 do? Grabbing TCU, TT, maybe SMU and who else? Please no bailer. I just don't see attractive options for the P12. The combos I am hearing sound like expansion for the sake of expansion.

What happens to Okie Lite?

Fascinating.

I think you can safely say the Big 12 is dead. How/when it happens may change, but that conference has zero long-term future.

From a competitive standpoint, this move makes no sense at all to me. It makes sense for OU, though.

Yes. As @Bill Cody pointed out, look at how A&M's donations skyrocketed after the move. A&M now largely is on one level with UT financially.

The B12 was dead once CU, NU, MU and A&M left. It was only a matter of time. It probably lasted longer than it should have, if we are being honest.

I get that, but I guess im not convinced that the move will have the same impact for UT that it had for A&M.

One thing is for certain, this is going to be fun to watch. I really have no idea how this is all going to turn out.

The ego of the Texas Board of Trustees seems to be the primary driver.

It's really not just expansion for the sake of expansion. The Pac-12 desperately needs Texas and the CTZ.

Far too much smoke by far too many people. If they have their minds set on it their lawyers will find a way.

If it happens The P12 also has to be careful about the timing of the expansion though, I don't think they want to agree to add teams now if that would require giving an extension of the current deal to the broadcast partners for opening up the deal to make the league whole after adding new members. I'm not sure what sort of provisions the current deal might have for adding members.

Also, does California still have those laws on the books banning travel to various states with politics that the California legislature doesn't agree with, or is there an exemption for athletic teams?

Unlike certain European soccer clubs, it seems that UT, OU, and the SEC had this basically worked out before word leaked. If that's accurate, I don't see it not working out.

This playbook has been run by UT before. Chip Brown is out there doing his thing again. I’m not saying it’s all a bunch of bull****, but I’m leaving open the possibility, given the source.

Usually when you add or lose members the current deal is renegotiated (tv partners are in the loop before they are added to make sure it’s a good plan). It’s a big reason why the SEC added Missouri and A&M. Luckily most of the big 12 candidates are already signed so they deal structure would be easy. Where you would get in trouble is SMU and houston.

It definitely won't quite simply because Texas already operates at a really high level revenue wise so they simply don't have the same room for growth with their donations that A&M had (and I think the move isn't the sole reason for the revenue increase Aggie had, I think it's the combination of the move coupled with the Johnny Football hype which they used for an incredibly successful donation drive to fund the Kyle Field expansion).

The main motivation here for UT will be that they want to safeguard their future by being in the most relevant and profitable conference in the nation.

Plus there are plenty of precedents of teams switching conference affiliation in college football.

But it's not just him? I'd understand your caution in that case, but it's pretty much a wildfire at this point with the Big 12 putting out a written statement that very strongly implies something is up and there's a split between OU/UT and the other eight.
