Oliver in Mock Draft as First Rounder

Sporting News writer Eric Galko has a way too early Mock Draft out today that puts Oliver in the 1st round as the #25 pick to the Los Angeles Rams.

Oh no, what does our guy do?

25. Los Angeles Rams: Isaiah Oliver, CB, Colorado

A breakout star for a Colorado team that has surprisingly put multiple defensive backs in the NFL, Oliver has emerged as one of the few defensive backs worth a first-round pick this year. After letting Janoris Jenkins walk and not locking up Trumaine Johnson long-term, it’s clear the Rams will need cornerback help.

Sucks for us but great for him. Although long term this would help us out

Eric Galko, surprisingly, insulted Colorado while praising Oliver.

Not surprisingly, congrats to Isiah.

Surprisingly, I really don’t want Eric to be looking at his phone while crossing a busy intersection.

Well, bye. It sucks, but there’s no way he passes up first round money to stay at CU. Good for him, though.

It sucks because the football team will lose a great player. That sucks. It’s great for him, though.

Great news for him.

Selfishly I wanted him to stay for another year, but if the NFL is going to throw big $$$ at him that’s great.

The Buffs will have a good NFL presence with Jimmy Smith, Ken Crawley, Ahkello Witherspoon, Chidobe Awuzie, and Tedric Thompson.

Of course not, but I imagine a Secondary of Oliver, Udoffia, Wigley/Miller/Blackmon, Fisher, and Worthington. Either way, it should be a nasty defensive backfield, but Oliver back would make it one of the best on the Pac.

I worry a lot more when these types of moves seemingly catch a coaching staff by surprise. Not the case here since we know this has been a possibility for months, hence why the coaches recruited Abrams hard.

Putting starting CBs into the NFL multiple years in a row can't be ignored as a recruiting tool. Hate to lose Oliver but it should be seen as an indicator of the staff's ability to recognize and develop talent at the position.

Now if we could do the same thing on the DL I would be much happier.

In the Buffs Daily Podcast today, Oliver said his intentions are to play 4 years at CU and that he doesn’t plan on leaving CU early for the NFL. Does anyone think he’ll actually stay if given an NFL opportunity?

The interview can be heard at 1:39 here.
He'd be crazy to stay if he's getting a 1st round grade (top 3-5 CB in draft), but he also loves track and is adamant about trying to compete in the Summer Olympics in 2020, so I don't think we can rule it out.

Would be dumb to come back if he has a high grade.

His stock will only rise after the season too imo

My take is that he’s trying not to be distracted by NFL talk, so that he can focus on finishing the season well. I’m sure he doesn’t want anyone, including teammates, questioning his commitment to the team either. It would be too hard to pass down 1st round draft pick money. He is in the #MoneyGang afterall...

He's got to be gone. He's already in the first round everywhere and that's only going to get better. He is going to be a combine freak with his decathlon skills.

We play in a pass happy league.

If you want to win in this league and there is one single position on the entire field that you want to be known for putting kids into the no fun league, it's DB.

here are some other mocks.

PFF - 22nd pick in the first round
CBS - 18th pick in the first round
USA today - 22nd pick in the first round
Sporting News - 26th pick in the first round
Walter Football - not listed in 2018 or 2019 ???

Based on the comments, his athleticism, and playing off of the DB success last year, he has to come out and go pro!!! I put the odds at 80% gone / 20% coming back.
Who from the time of recruiting to development should get the credit for all these DB's that we have???
Coach Mac is a high level defensive backs coach and expert, so did he have a lot to do with this and is he a key part of this wealth of success at this position?
Oliver (recruited by Gary Bernardi out of Phoenix, AZ)
Chido (recruited by Charles Clark out of San Jose, CA)
Thompson (recruited by Charles Clark and Gary Bernardi out of Valencia, CA)
Witherspoon (recruited by Klayton Adams out of Sacramento, CA)

MacIntyre is the common denominator. He knows the **** out of DBs.

This.

Head coaches are restricted in the number of contacts they can have directly with a prospect off campus. You won't find a head coach listed as the lead recruiter on a kid unless that kid is already in love with a school and on his own is making multiple visits to campus.

MacIntyre's record speaks for itself. Even Ken Crowley who was a hold over from the prior staff went from a guy who was considered a marginal player to an NFL starter with some time with MacIntyre.

None of us are in the meeting rooms but I'd be willing to bet a cold one that MacIntyre is watching the films and has a lot to say about which HS kids we go after and which ones we don't. I know that he is more involved in coaching the DBs here than most head coaches are.

Does establish #DBU for us!
Pretty pumped about Delrick Abrams, Jr if Mac has a good eye for him! As well as the current and other DB's
Agreed that you have to have the DL working in tandem with the DB's to be totally great. Pressure equals turnovers on the back end, and tight coverage keeps the ball in the QB's hands longer.

Oliver's decision to stick around may be related to Track, not solely football. Being able to play football and participate in the Decathlon (preparing for the next Olympics). I think he is happy at CU playing both sports and sticks around for his Sr. year.

The ****?

Guys with Olympic dreams are different. If those are real for him, maybe he stays.

From a purely football (and financial) standpoint, he would be smart to leave, but if he also feels like he has a reasonable chance to make the Olympics, he'd be smart to take advantage of what CU can offer while he's waiting for 2020.
